The NC State men's basketball team went on a 21-2 run early in the second half to beat Syracuse, 83-65, Wednesday night in the second round of the ACC Tournament played at Capital One Arena.
With the win, NC State advances to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament where it will face second-seed Duke. Tipoff against the Blue Devils is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN.
NC State held a 35-32 lead at halftime, but Syracuse opened the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points of the half to take a 39-37 lead on a Judah Mintz field goal with 18:45 to play. The Pack responded with a
DJ Horne basket on the ensuing possession. Horne's jumper was the start of a game-defining 21-2 run for the Pack.
NC State's defense sparked the run as over the next six minutes the Pack forced six Syracuse turnovers and blocked two shots which allowed NC State to take over the game.
While the Pack turned up the defensive pressure, the offense responded on the other end as NC State scored on nine of 10 possessions to turn a two-point deficit into a 17-point lead.
Syracuse made one push, scoring seven straight to get within 10, 60-50, with 10:12 to play, but the Pack scored the next eight points to take an 18-point lead with 6:18 to go and the Orange never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Jayden Taylor led four NC State players in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He reset his rebounding career-high that he set last night with eight by grabbing nine rebounds against the Orange.
Mohamed Diarra did not score in double figures, but did pull down a game-high 14 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, and double his previous career-high by passing out a team-best six assists.
After missing last night's win over Louisville,
DJ Horne came off-the-bench to score 16 points in 19 minutes of action. He scored all 16 of his points in the second half. Horne also finished with a game-high four steals.
Michael O'Connell matched his season-high for points that he set last night by scoring 16 points against the Orange, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.
DJ Burns added 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added six rebounds and three assists.
Casey Morsell finished with just six points after scoring 25 in the win over Louisville in the first round, but Morsell's final point courtesy of a second half free throw was his 1,000th in an NC State uniform.
He is now the 57th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Syracuse scored the first two buckets of the game and had an early 6-1 advantage, but a 6-0 mini-run gave NC State its first lead, 9-8, on an O'Connell three-pointer.
The two teams would go on to exchange the lead six more times before the Pack broke a 27-27 tie, outscoring the Orange 8-5 to end the half and take a 35-32 advantage into the locker room.
For the game, NC State forced Syracuse into 19 turnovers and turned the 19 turnovers into a 30-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Pack also finished with 17 offensive rebounds to just eight for Syracuse and outscored the Orange, 20-7, in second chance points.
