The NC State women's golf team is back in action on Sept. 11-12 as it plays in the season-opening Cougar Classic. The Wolfpack is one of 17 teams competing at the 2023-24 season opener set to take place at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.

NC State's Lauren Olivares Leon becomes first woman to shoot 60 in college golf history

North Carolina State's Lauren Olivares Leon made college golf history in the opening round of the Cougar Classic, becoming the first woman to shoot 60. The round of 11 under at Yeamans Hall Club included 13 birdies and two bogeys. A total of 17 men have shot 60 in collegiate events.

Olivares Leon, a junior from Mexico who is 182nd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, began the day on the 10th hole with birdie. She birdied the last two holes of the back nine to make the turn in 32, and then shot 28 on the front nine with eight birdies.

Lauren Olivares Leon shot an NCAA record 60 (-11) to highlight the Pack's 2023-24 season debut at the Cougar Classic.

The Wolfpack junior's score marks the lowest 18-hole mark in NCAA history and ties the NCAA record for comparison to par. Olivares Leon opened her campaign with a total of 13 birdies in the first round of action at Yeamans Hall, firing eight of those in a row and 10 in her last 11 holes. Her final 13 holes of round one were bogey free.

Olivares Leon heads into her third season with the Pack after setting program records in the following categories as a sophomore last year: lowest 54-hole score (208, -8) at the NCAA Raleigh Regional, lowest 18-hole postseason score (67, -5) in the first round of regional action, best individual regional finish in NC State history (second place).

Following her record-setting performance, she and the rest of the Pack headed back out to play the second round which was suspended due to weather. The teams will resume round two at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and will then immediately go into third-round action.

NC State heads into the back half of the tournament in eighth place as a team, and Olivares Leon continues to hold a one-shot lead over Laney Frye of Kentucky.

The NC State women's golf program has released its tournament schedule for the 2023-24 season, as announced by head coach Page Marsh on Monday afternoon.

The team's slate for the 2023-24 campaign features nine regular-season tournaments, with five of those occurring in September and October before another four played during the spring semester.

NC State returns five of six players who competed at last season's NCAA Championships final site and also welcomes the addition of three freshmen newcomers.
The Wolfpack opened its year playing Sept. 11-12 at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C., and now heads into four tournaments in October. That month, NC State is set to compete at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 2-4) in Fayetteville, Ark., the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 9-10) in Chapel Hill, N.C., the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship (Oct. 15-17) in Knoxville, Tenn., and the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 27-29) in Wilmington, N.C.

For the second year in a row, the Pack will compete in the Collegiate Invitational hosted by Virginia in Guadalajara, Mexico, with that spring-opening tournament set for Feb. 2-3. The squad then rounds out its spring with stroke-play action at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational (Feb. 18-19) in Sarasota, Fla., the Briar's Creek Invitational (March 11-12) in Johns Island, S.C. and the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic (March 29-30) in Athens, Ga.

NC State returns to Raleigh for its sole home event of the year April 8-9. The team will host its annual Wolfpack Match Play tournament to wrap up the regular season and prepare for the postseason.

The 2024 ACC Championship is set for April 18-21 at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, N.C. The event will continue in its third year of combined stroke play and match play formatting.

NCAA regional action will take place May 6-8 at one of six sites across the country, the closest of those being at Bermuda Run Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. Advancing teams from the regionals will compete in the 2024 NCAA Championship held May 17-22 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Champions Course in Carlsbad, Calif.

NC State women's golf readies for competition at the fourth annual Blessings Collegiate Invitational presented by Tyson Foods with the exclusive event set to run Oct. 2-4. The Wolfpack women will head to Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., alongside the men's program as NC State is one of 10 schools to send both its men's and women's teams to participate at the tournament.

Playing in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational for the first time, NC State women's golf finished eighth as a squad as competition wrapped up Wednesday. The team posted a 36-hole cumulative score of 603 (+27).

The third and final round of the tournament was suspended after only a few holes of action on Wednesday, and scores from that round were not counted toward the final team and individual results.

Lauren Olivares Leon and Isabel Amezcua both finished in the top 20 of the field. Olivares Leon shot two-under (70) on day one and had a 77 on day two to finish three-over (147) on the week. Amezcua was just a stroke behind her teammate, posting a 72 in the first round and a 76 in the second round for a tournament total of 148.

After an 81 during her first day on the course, Vania Simont then notched a one-under 71 during Tuesday's action. Ellise Rymer and Caitlin Whitehead rounded out the Wolfpack lineup, marking the second time in as many tournaments this season that the Pack has run with this five-player rotation.

NC State continues its four-tournament October in a week when it makes the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., to play at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 9 and 10.

After wrapping up action at its last tournament just five days prior, NC State women's golf makes the quick turnaround to play at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship. The event, hosted by Tennessee, will take place at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., and will run Sunday, Oct. 15 through Tuesday, Oct. 17.

NC State wrapped up action at its third of four October tournaments on Wednesday with the third and final round of competition at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by Tennessee. The team placed tied for seventh in a field of 14 teams, 13 of which are ranked in the national top 70, and posted a three-round score of 866 (+14).

The team's score ranks among the top 15 54-hole marks in program history. Individually, the Pack's time at the tournament was highlighted by a pair of top-20 finishers and three among the top 30 individuals.

Wolfpack rookie Ellise Rymer shot par or better in all three rounds of the event, highlighted by a one-under 70 on day two. Rymer finished tied for 10th place individually with a score of 212 (-1)

Vania Simont was tied for 20th overall after kicking off action with the lowest score of her Wolfpack career (67) in the opening round. She had six birdies that day as she tallied her first sub-70 score of the season, and Simont went on to post a cumulative score of 215 (+2).

Lauren Olivares Leon wrapped out the team's top-30 finishers with her score of 217 (+4), and Isabel Amezcua posted the team's lowest score of round three (70) to close out her 223 (+10) tournament. Caitlin Whitehead rounded out the Pack's five-woman lineup with a score of 233 (+20).

NC State will round out the fall portion of its 2023-24 slate at the Landfall Tradition from Oct. 27-29.

The Wolfpack women's golf team will play its final tournament of the fall this weekend as the squad heads to Wilmington to compete in the Landfall Tradition.

In addition to the collegiate event, which is set to run Friday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 29, Vania Simont and Lauren Olivares Leon are representing Mexico at the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) in Abu Dhabi Thursday through Sunday.

Lea Ludgwig will be making her collegiate debut as she heads to Wilmington for competition at the Landfall Tradition. Jaclyn Kenzel is in the lineup for the second time this season, and Ellise Rymer, Isabel Amezcua and Caitlin Whitehead will also be in action.

NC State's final tournament of the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule was highlighted by a top-10 finish and a third-round 65 (-7) by Isabel Amezcua.

As a team, the Pack concluded a busy October by placing 18th at the Landfall Tradition hosted by UNCW. The squad posted a 54-hole score of 889 (+25) over the course of the weekend.

Amezcua fired the best 18-hole score of her career in the final round of action with her 65. After securing the first under-par round of her season at the Pack's last tournament, the senior did so twice at Landfall with a 71 in the second round to follow her tournament-opening 75. Her three-day total of 211 (-5) was her season-best score and one shot off the lowest 54-hole score of her career.

NC State rookie Ellise Rymer continued to impress with a score of 221 (+5), with her best round of the tournament coming in the form of an even-par 72 on Saturday.

Jaclyn Kenzel shot one-under (71) on day one to tie her career-best round. Lea Ludwig and Caitlin Whitehead were also in action for the Pack, with Ludwig making her collegiate debut.

With the conclusion of the fall, the Wolfpack will next be in action Feb. 2-3 when it makes the trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, for the Collegiate Invitational hosted by Virginia.

NC State women's golf placed eighth in its first of five spring tournaments as it competed against a stacked field of 12 the past two days at the Collegiate Invitational.

Hosted by UVA at the Guadalajara Country Club, the Wolfpack shot a combined 907 (+43) after splitting up the 54 holes of action across two days.

Vania Simont led the Pack's five scorers with a 224 (+8) performance that was highlighted by a two-under (70) second round.

Isabel Amezcua shot an even 72 on the opening day of competition on her way to posting a 226 (+10).

Next up for the Wolfpack is a trip to Sarasota, Fla., to play in the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational. The event, hosted by Michigan State, will run Feb. 18-19 at Palm Aire Country Club.
