Quietly we're only 2 months from NC state opening their season on Sep 15th at the Adidas XC Challenge (like every year). The rest of the schedule isn't announced yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same as last year:

Adidas Challenge - Joe Piane - Nuttycombe - ACC - Regionals - Nationals

NC State returns 5 of its top 7 from last season (per Gopack roster) where they finished 11th at NCAA's.

Returners and their finish last year at Nationals:
Brett Gardner - 64th
Hannes Burger - 76th
Ian Harrison - 80th
Jake Toomey - 227th
JJ Malach - 248th

Key Losses:
Ian Shanklin, Robinson Snider, David Vorbach

The people that i expect to threaten for varsity/travel spots this year are:

Brett Gardner - The top returner for the men's side with All-American Ian Shanklin graduating. He really leveled up this past XC season He really only had one underpermoance when he was 49th overall and 5th on the team at ACC's, otherwise he was stellar all year. Leading the team at Nuttycombe and finishing 2nd to Shanklin at the remaining big meets (Joe Piane, Regionals, Nationals). During indoors he set great PB's in the Mile and 5k before redshirting outdoors.

Hannes Burger - He's an older student who has been out of track eligibility for a while (did not run indoors or outdoors this past year), but he still has his COVID year for XC if he wants it and he's both listed in the Gopack roster and in the student directory so i'm assuming he's running XC this year. He had a late start last season working his way back from injury and didn't finish a race until ACC's (opened at Nuttycombe but DNF'd). But once he found his fitness at ACC's he was solid, finishing 3rd on the team there, 5th at regionals, and 3rd at Nationals again. His quality and experience in the middle of the lineup will be invaluable this season as the Men try to replace Shanklin's All-American ability.

Ian Harrison - Like Gardner, he tremendously leveled up his game this past XC season. He sat out the Joe Piane meet, but finished between 2nd and 4th on the team every other meet of the year, showing great consistency. Then he took it a step further and dropped huge PB's during indoors of 7:53 in the 3k and 13:35 in the 5k, being close to qualifying to nationals in both. Much like Gardner he then went on to redshirt outdoors. He has the potential in him to finish dozens of spots higher at nationals than his 80th place finish last year.

Toby Gualter - Transfer in from Eastern Michigan. Should be a really strong and consistent middle of the lineup scorer for us. Hasn't raced at XC Nationals before (similar to Abby Loveys on the women's side their teams just weren't good enough), but he's shown he's a strong performer on both the grass and track and had a great year of improvement overall. He was 2nd at his conference meet and 22nd in his regional in XC, before setting PB's in the Mile and 3k indoors, and the 1500, 5k and 10k outdoors. His transfer really helps us plug the hole left by Robinson Snider who graduated.

Dan McGoey - Have high hopes for him to be the one to step up for the team this year. He was top 5 last season, finishing 4th on the team at Joe Piane and 5th at Nuttycombe before succumbing to injury and having to redshirt indoors as well. He came back strong in outdoors setting a new PB in the 10k so i'm hopeful his injuries are past him and he can get back to his strong performances in XC.

Jake Toomey - Generally more of a middle distance, this was his fullest schedule in XC yet and it paid off as he was running better times than ever before. Sure a 227th placing at Nationals isn't stellar, but its way better than he was doing in prior years and shows he has potential on the grass. I dont think many expected him to make the top 7 last year but he was 5th on the team at Joe Piane, and then 6th at each of ACC's, Regionals, and Nationals. He set new PB's in indoors in the Mile, and outdoors in the 1500 and 5k. Hoping for another step forwards for him this fall.

JJ Malach - Had never been in the travel squad for any of the big meets prior to this past fall, however he gained some great experience against the class of the country and he took that forward with him into a strong track campaign. He set a new PB in the 3k indoors, and then set new PB's in each of the 1500, 5k and 10k outdoors culminating in coming in 7th in the 10k at ACC's. Have hopes he can take another step up this year to be the Brooke Rauber of the men's squad who can step up and have a great day if one of the top runners is having a bad race.

Kevin Antczak - The Marlee Starliper of the men's team. Was a mega talent out of high school but has struggled with injuries his whole college career. He had a healthy and solid outdoors season in 2022 and was building on that well, finishing 7th on the team at Joe Piane and Nuttycombe before DNF'ing ACC's to end his season and then redshirting indoors. He came back and ran a few 5k's outdoors but it wasn't as good as his 2022 outdoors season. Hopefully he can get in a full summer of base building and have a solid season this fall.

Travis Koekemoer - Had never run XC in college before transferring to NC State in summer 2022 and had a solid season, finishing 6th on the team at Joe Piane and Nuttycombe before finishing 9th at ACC's. He set a new PB in the 3k indoors before having a solid but not spectacular outdoors season. Now that he has experience with NC State's training and XC i hope he can take a step forwards.

Matt Bogdan - Last fall XC is his only season competing for NC state so far after redshirting his whole freshman season in 21-22 and then getting injured after XC. He has talent and after getting into the travel team last season and finishing 10th on the team at ACC's the hope is that he can keep that momentum going.

Joe Jaster - Transferred in from D3 Union Cross after being a really strong runner at the D3 level. His PB's aren't the greatest but the hope is that he can step up with the step up in competition as well as his own training partners.

That is probably it for athletes i'd expect to compete for top 7 barring injuries or surprises. Miles Ally has run in the travel squad a few times and i'm really high on Jimmy Mullarkey who redshirted all of last year. Given our really strong depth (at least at the back end) i would be surprised if any of the freshman ran XC this fall. None of them are likely to make an impact this year and are more developmental prospects.

As far as the team is concerned, there is more than enough talent to certainly qualify for nationals again as the first goal. After missing in 2021 that is a standard the men's side needs to get back to keeping. Once there, i have hope the men can finish top 15 with a good race. A lot is riding on the shoulders of Gardner and Harrison to step up and be the low sticks for the team as it's hard to project the 5th runner. The hope is McGoey or one of the others can step up and get as close to Robinson Sniders 112th place finish as possible. That solid 5th runner is how we were able to finish 11th last year. We should have a solid 4, its the 5th that we're looking for. If we can finish top 15 it would be the first time the men's program has been top 15 in back to back years since 2000 and 2001.

The Stride Report has released their annual top 50+ rankings for individuals. On the men's side, as expected no one from NC State was in the top 50 as we lost our only all-american from last year in Ian Shanklin and none of our top 3 returning runners were in the top 50 last year and none ran outdoor track either so there is a bit of question mark to them from people outside the program. Brett Gardner was listed in the Honorable Mention category which would have him projected somewhere between 60-80 (50-60 was specifically spelled out in a Just Missed category). Fair enough ranking all things considered as he was 64th last year at nationals but did have an inconsistent race or two in him like at ACC's, and he redshirted track so people outside the program will have no idea of his fitness or health at this point.

I have faith that both Gardner and Ian Harrison have the ability to push for top 50 by the end of the season.

The team rankings should come out next week. Expecting to see NC State top 25 due to the same National concerns of unknown statuses. I think they can push for top 15 this season.

The Stride Report is releasing their preseason Team rankings one by one each day. They've now reached 20th place where they've slotted the Men's team. For reference they were projected 22nd last year and finished 11th wildly outperforming expectations.

Their summary and reasonings are pretty similar to mine. Loss of Shanklin as the steady low point scorer means Gardner and Harrison (who they agree with me have the potential to do so) need to keep building on their progress and take that next step. Hannes Burger and Toby Gualter will be steady middle of the lineup consistent scorers. The other issue is needing to find a consistent 5th. They mentioned all the same names i did bar Matt Bogdan who i still believe has a lot of potential and Jimmy Mullarkey who didn't officially race so they have no reason to be as high on him as I am.

Pretty much how i expected and happy to see a national report (that doesn't follow the ins and outs of our team as I do) recognize the depth and consistent scoring we have and not drop us to far back with the losses of Ian Shanklin and Robinson Snider.

Should be a fun season. 1 month until the opening race!

start lists are out for the opening home meet. Start lists are always fluid particularly for a smaller meet like this but for now it looks like all of the mens team is healthy and running tomorrow. The 3 freshmen, and two middle distance athletes (Kyle Durham and Grant Howlett) will be running unattached.

Adidas challenge results are in. As expected the start list was fools gold as most of the top guys didn't run in likely locked in top 5 guys Brett Gardner, Hannes Burger and Ian Harrison, and a few guys competing for top 7/travel squad in Travis Koekemoer, Jake Toomey, Kevin Antczak and Joe Jaster. So these results are truly a rust buster for some guys that need it and some experience for some newer guys and the middle distance guys.

NC State took home the top 6 places like this:

1st JJ Malach 17:50
2nd Toby Gualter 17:53
3rd Dan McGoey 18:04
4th Wesley Larson 18:05
5th Zach Hughes 18:09
6th Matt Bogdan 18:10

and then the 3 redshirt freshman in their first competitive XC races for State placing 12th-14th in the race

12th Patrick Gibbons 18:32
13th Ryan Motondo 18:33
14th Jimmy Mullarkey 18:35

Also impressive was true freshman Elliott McArthur with an 18:44 for 21st place while running unattached. The top true freshman last year was 19:00 so this is a solid effort.

The NC State cross country team returned to action on Friday night at the Adidas XC Challenge with JJ Malach taking first place in the men's 6k and helping lead the Pack to a season-opening victory.

Malach took home his first collegiate win of his career in the men's 6k, clocking in at 17:50.9 to finish first. He was closely followed by Toby Gualter and Daniel McGoey who clocked in at 17:53.2 and 18:04.6 to take second and third, respectively. Three more NC State runners followed, as Wesley Larson (18:05.2), Zach Hughes (18:09.5), and Matthew Bogdan (18:10.2) rounded out an all-Wolfpack top-six.

Malach, Gualter, McGoey, Larson, and Hughes accumulated 15 points as the first five runners across the finish line and secured the win for the Pack.

In the women's 5k, NC State athletes Leah Stephens (16:54.8), Angelina Napoleon (17:14.0), and Jolena Quarzo (17:14.7) ran unattached and claimed the top-three spots in the race. The first NC State runner to cross the finish line wearing the red and white was Heather Holt, who finished sixth with a time of 17:25.3.

First 2024 commit for the men's team is in, Noah Valyo of Athens Drive in Raleigh. His former teammate Krister Sjoblad is a part of this year's freshman class.

NC State men's team gets their second commit in the class of 2024.

Brayden Marshall from West Virginia. PB's of 1:57.67/4:15.40/8:56.62/14:56.74 (800/Mile/3200/5k)

This is a very strong start to the 2024 recruiting class for the men's team and looks like it could be the best since 2020 maybe. Marshall and Valyo are both currently ranked in the top 50 in the class per The Stride Report.

Entries are out for the Joe Piane Invitational tomorrow. The men seem to have pretty much everyone healthy and ready to go. Notre Dame will be a big favorite in this one but NC State should be in contention to finish anywhere from 2nd - 4th.

The full entry list is:

Miles Ally
Kevin Antczak
Matt Bogdan
Hannes Burger
Brett Gardner
Patrick Gibbons
Toby Gualter
Ian Harrison
Zach Hughes
Joe Jaster
Travis Koekemoer
Wesley Larson
JJ Malach
Dan McGoey
Jimmy Mullarkey
Jake Toomey

I would expect Harrison and Gardner to both finish in the top 20 if not higher.

true freshman Elliott McArthur is also entered unattached to preserve his redshirt.

The men's team had an up and down day to take 4th in the Joe Piane Invitational. Brett Gardner had a really good day to finish 17th to lead the team and Dan McGoey had a great day to finish 23rd and finish 2nd on the team. Hannes Burger and Toby Gualter paired well to finish 42nd and 43rd as mid lineup scorers and JJ Malach was the final scorer in 49th. Wesley Larson had a really strong performance to add depth and finish 54th in his first time in the top lineup at a travel meet. Ian Harrison had a rough day and was fading at the end to finish 78th but i expect him to bounce back.

The most promising part of the race is that Dan McGoey looks like he can be that other strong runner in the top 5 long term to pair with Gardner, Harrison, Burger and Gualter. Excited to see how the team continues to shape up as the season progresses.

welp the men's team is in trouble. 31st place finish in a meet where they earned the majority of their KOLAS points last year to make it to nationals. Hannes Burger did not race but even still this does not look like a nationals team right now which is sad.

Toby Gualter ran well today, 51st overall to lead the team. Dan McGoey was also really solid to finish in 65th. After that pretty much the only person i can give props to is Zach Hughes who is an 800 runner that took over as our 4th scorer today. 201st overall is good for him but its horrendous for a 4th scorer. Brett Gardner was disappointing finishing in 151st after finishing 48th in this same meet last year and 64th in nationals last year. I dont know whats going on with Ian Harrison who i thought could be a borderline all-american this year and has now finished 78th in a weak field and a DNF today this year. I thought JJ Malach could be much better too after a solid start to the year.

Haven't lost all faith yet because the team peaked perfectly last year for nationals. The worry is that its going to be near impossible to make nationals this year unless we upset a bunch of teams at Conference and regionals and right now we look just bad.

I have zero hopes or expectations for the men's team or their short term future. Wouldn't be too surprised if they didn't qualify this year. In the last 30 years, they've only failed to qualify for nationals in 1994 and 2005. Failed to qualify in 2021, 2014, 2005, 1994, 1993.

IIRC the Men missed in 2021 as well, i think only JP Flavin was there as an individual when the women won their first title.

But yeah, the fall for the men's program has been so sad to watch. Took a step in the right direction by giving Henes the reigns of the program overall but Geiger is still head for cross country so nothing has changed. 11th last year looks like it was fools gold. Our last 5 years may end up being 26th - 23rd - Missed - 11th - Missed. Crazy how two programs at the same schools can be on such different trajectories.

A few NC State athletes went over to Greenville this morning to run at the ECU invitational. The team has used this meet regularly the last few years as a low-cost way to let some athletes that are not a part of the travel squad at the moment and some redshirting athletes race. For the men the following athletes participated (the men could really use David Vorbach right now but he's out of XC eligibility):

1st. David Vorbach 23:27.5 (unattached)
5th. Ryan Motondo 23:54.1
9th. Miles Ally 24:10.9
11th. Patrick Gibbons 24:13.3
17th. Elliott McArthur 24:36.5 (unattached)
22nd. Kevin Antczak 24:50.7
