For the people who dont follow much track outside of NC State, Tuohy took some pretty big scalps today. Elise Cranny is an olympian who has run 3:59 1500 and 14:33 5000 outdoors. Laura Galvan has run 14:51 for 5000. Elly Henes has run 14:52.

Really shows the level of fitness Tuohy has right now. Expectations for her outdoors are going to be unreal.

She will match David Thompson as the greatest NC State athlete of all time.

I have to admit that I didn't see that performance coming. Holy crap what a run. Karissa Schweizer was a beast of a runner with the collegiate record at 8:41.60. Hell, third all-time was 4 seconds slower than that. Katelyn's previous PR was 8:54 (19th all time). A freaking 19 second PR to utterly demolish the previous collegiate record by 6.4 seconds?? I'm at a loss for words.

my mind is going all kinds of places for a potential 5k time outdoors if she can get into a fast race. Unfortunately im not sure how many fast races with pro's there are in April/May since they are gearing up for July

Records are meant to be broken and Katelyn Tuohy has no problem handling her end of that deal.

For the second time this indoor season, Tuohy, NC State's sophomore phenom, has taken down another NCAA record.

On Saturday at the Millrose Games in New York, Tuohy smashed the 3000k mark, finishing in 8:35.20.

The previous mark - 8:41.60 - was set in 2018 by Karissa Schweizer of Missouri. Tuohy was the top collegiate finisher on Saturday, coming in third, one spot ahead of former teammate Elly Henes.

Last month at the Dr. Sanders Invitational, Tuohy broke the NCAA indoor record for the mile, finishing in 4:24.26. In December, she ran the 5000m in 15:15.92 at the Boston University Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener. That mark is currently No. 1 in the nation. Tuohy now holds the top three marks nationally in the 5000m, the mile and now the 3000m.

In just two seasons, Tuohy already has two NCAA titles (outdoor 5000m, cross country) and is a six-time All-American.

(unofficial) Record Progression for Mile and 3000:

Mile
2/5/83 - Jo White, Richmond - 4:31.24
2/5/88 - Vicki Huber, Villanova - 4:28.31
2/28/09 - Jenny Barringer, Colorado - 4:25.91
1/28/23 - Katelyn Tuohy, NC State - 4:24.26

3000
2/27/83 - PattiSue Plumer, Stanford - 8:53.54
3/13/04 - Kim Smith, Providence - 8:49.18
2/7/09 - Sally Kipyego, Texas Tech - 8:48.77
3/14/09 - Jenny Barringer, Colorado - 8:42.03
2/3/18 - Karissa Schweizer, Missouri - 8:41.60
2/11/23 - Katelyn Tuohy, NC State - 8:35.20

Data from https://www.ustfccca.org/records-lists/collegiate-all-time-bests?gender=2&sport=1&div=1&top=25&event=10

A surprisingly slow progression of records in both of these events, IMO. Only 4 records in the mile in the last 40 years? Maybe that just makes it even more impressive.
Tuohy's efforts almost exactly mirror Jenny Barringer's 2009 season. Barringer broke the mile record (by a whopping 3 seconds) and followed it up 2 weeks later by demolishing the 3000 record (6.75 seconds). Tuohy didn't exactly shatter the mile record, but a week later she destroyed the 3000 record by 6.40 seconds.

and just for good measure:
5000
2/22/85 - Christine McMiken, Oklahoma State - 15:21.80 (converted)
1/26/91 - Sonia O'Sullivan, Villanova - 15:17.28
3/12/04 - Kim Smith, Providence - 15:14.18
2/28/15 - Emily Sisson, Providence - 15:12.22

Tuohy is 9th at 15:15.92. She absolutely could break the record, but I doubt they'll focus on it for the rest of this season. Championship season starts in two weeks, and the focus will be on winning championships instead of running in pro races to break records.

Kim Smith held both the 3000 and 5000 records, set on back-to-back dates 3/12/04 and 3/13/04.
No one has held the mile, 3000, and 5000 at the same time, at least since the early 80s and as far I can tell by manually going over the USTFCCCA site.

Meet directors these days seem far more committed to fast races than championship style races. Every big meet in the country now seems to have pacers taking kids through at a really quick pace. That plus the shoe technology i would be surprised if every college distance record isn't broken in the next few years.

This indoor season alone, the womens mile, and 3000M records have fallen, the 800 has seen the #2, #3, and #4 best marks all time this season, and the #2 1000m time of all time was run. On the men's side, the 3000m record was broken. The #2 mile time ever was run, the #6 and #7 best 3000m's ever were run in addition to the record, and the #3, #4, #5, and #6 best 5000m times were run.

Shoutout to Jenny Simpson for setting both her Mile and 300m record (at the time) in either a conference or national meet.

Raleigh Relays with a pacer and then don't race again until ACC (except for maybe a DMR leg at Penn)

Raleigh Relays always brings in some great collegians but late march is a rough time if they want to attract any legit pro talent. Its a worlds year so after US Indoor champs i imagine most pros that are thinking about US Outdoor Champs and Worlds are going to shut it down for a while.

They need someone who is going to be able to help push her after the pacer drops. I think she can break 15:00 if she needs to hold a pace for 2-3k by herself but thats not really the kind of time i am imagining.
