Swimming in the first of three consecutive weekends of competition, NC State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams began the season's ACC competition with wins over Duke in the Saturday dual.

The fourth-ranked Wolfpack women ended Duke's 4-0 winning streak with a 168-130 win over the Blue Devils, while the fifth-ranked NC State men overcame unranked Duke to win 199-96.

NC State swept the podium in ten events, putting up the top time in all but six of the 32 events contested. Four members of the squad picked up wins in both of their individual events, respectively.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Junior Abby Arens posted two wins during the session, picking up the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.67) and 100-yard freestyle (49.90). Her finish in the freestyle event led one of three 1-2-3 sweeps for the Wolfpack women.

During the first season of her collegiate career, freshman Kennedy Noble put together two winning times, leading two 1-2-3 sweeps for the squad. In the 100-yard backstroke, her time of 52.96 seconds led the trio of the Pack in the top three, with Emma Muzzy (55.79) and Maddy Flickinger (55.79) finishing second and third. Noble's second win occurred just a handful of events later in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.35), where she once again led the women of NC State to a 1-2-3 finish with Muzzy (1:59.35) and Hefner (1:59.50) right behind.

On the men's side, graduate student Giovanni Izzo and junior Michael Moore led the way for the Pack. Both men put together top finishes in their individual events with Izzo winning the 100-yard backstroke (48.46) and 100-yard butterfly (47.79) and Moore claiming the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.15) and 200-yard backstroke (1:47.65). Both of Izzo's swims led the Pack to sweep the podium.

NC State secured 1-2-3 finishes in ten total events, with the additional sweeps occurring in the men's 1000-yard freestyle, men's 100-yard breaststroke, men's 100-yard freestyle, and the men's 400-yard individual medley (exhibition).

NC State opted to compete in the 400-freestyle relay as exhibition swims, though both the A and B relays for the women and men finished ahead of Duke's fastest relays on each side. NC State freshman Kennedy Noble was recognized by the ACC league office Tuesday as the conference's Women's Swimmer of the Week for her dominating performance in Saturday's dual meet win over Duke.

After picking up wins in both of her individual events during Saturday's meet on the road, the Goodyear, Ariz. native claims the first ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week honor of her career. Noble started the meet with a 24.98 split on the backstroke leg of the Wolfpack women's 200-yard medley relay and just six events later, went 52.96 in the 100-yard backstroke to secure the top spot. The winning time led the Pack to a 1-2-3 finish in the event, with Emma Muzzy and Maddy Flickinger finishing second and third.

Noble continued to prove her dominance by winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.35, an event in which she is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation. The freshman rounded out the day by leading off NC State's 'C' relay in the 400-yard freestyle relay, splitting 51.53 for the second-fastest leadoff split in the field.

Both individual swims mark NCAA B cuts, Noble being the only swimmer of the session to achieve the mark in both individual events.

The NC State squads will return to action Friday for a tri meet against North Carolina and Virginia in Chapel Hill and competition will resume Saturday morning at the Casey Natatorium in Raleigh for the Wolfpack's Senior Day.

With the squads split between two locations for weekend dual meet competition, the NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams each add a win and loss to the season record.
Swimming at home for the last time this season, the Wolfpack men and women defeated the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington 160-126 (men) and 186-105 (women). The session was highlighted by NC State winning all but two of the swimming events contested.
In the night's competition with No. 2/No. 5 Texas, the Pack men narrowly lost to the Longhorns 88-98, while the Wolfpack women fell with their 62 points to Texas' 124. Though the night came with a pair of team losses, NC State's evening was highlighted by five wins on the men's side and a nation-leading time on the women's side.

VS UNCW HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Elle Giesler, Kaylee Hamblin, and Lindsey Immel led the scoring for the Wolfpack women, each winning two individual events.
  • Giesler claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.95) and 100-yard butterfly (54.42), both marking season-bests for the senior in her last home meet.
  • Hamblin claimed both breaststroke events, going 1:01.48 in the 100 and 2:13.50 in the 200-yard events.
  • Immel's wins came in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native went 22.95 in the 50 and 50.47 in the 100 to claim the first collegiate wins of her career.
  • On the men's side, Zachary Cram, Michael Moore, Markus Wennborg, and Austin Winchester each picked up a pair of wins to assist in the Pack's victory over the Seahawks.
  • Cram finished in first place in both the 100-yard (47.71) and 200-yard (1:44.54) backstroke events. Both times mark as season-bests.
  • Moore claimed the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (1:44.02) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.33).
  • Wennborg and Winchester, both North Carolina natives, won both the 100 and 200-yard distances of their respective stroke. Wennborg swam breaststroke (54.01, 1:58.98) and Winchester competed in the freestyle events (44.57, 1:36.45).

VS. TEXAS HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The NC State women and men opened the meet by adding the names of both gender's A' relays of the 200-yard medley relay to the No. 3 spot in NC State's record book. Katharine Berkoff, Heather MacCasuland, Kylee Alons, and Abby Arens brought home a win with their time of 1:33.49, which stands as the fastest time in the nation this season. The quartet of Aiden Hayes, Mason Hunter, Nyls Korstanje, and David Curtiss went 1:22.73, both squads bettering the third-fastest times in program history.
  • The 2022 ACC Champion in the event, Luke Miller won the 200-yard freestyle by .02 over the second place finisher, going 1:31.87. The time is just off of his program record set last year.
  • Korstanje led the Pack men to sweep the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly (45.83). Hayes finished in second (45.89) and Kacper Stokowski posted a 46.20 second swim for third.
  • Mason Hunter moved up on the record book in the 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 52.41 seconds, good for third place in the dual meet, moves him to the third-fastest in program history.
  • The Wolfpack women's only individual win of the session was earned by Katharine Berkoff's performance in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time of 21.90 seconds is a season-best by .32 of a second.
  • NC State racked up quite a few points in the 50-yard freestyle, with all four of the Pack men entered in the event finishing ahead of the Longhorns. Curtiss, as a sophomore, went 19.06 for the win, with Noah Henderson just behind him for second place (19.09). Korstanje and Miller tied for third (19.59).

NC State's swim and dive teams picked up a pair of wins and losses between Jan. 27-28. In a top-five showdown over two days at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Texas, the No. 4 men lost to No. 5 Texas by a combined score of 178-156, while the No. 4 women fell to the No. 2 Longhorns by a combined 217-115.
Back in Raleigh, however, the men easily handled UNCW in a 160-126 victory, and the women followed suit to finish the last home meet with a 186-105 win over the Seahawks.
Friday evening UNCW

In NC State's last home meet of the season, both the men and women easily defeated UNCW. With most of the team's top swimmers competing in Austin, other members of NC State's talented roster got the chance to shine against a well-trained squad of Seahawks.
Senior Elle Giesler and sophomores Kaylee Hamblin and Lindsey Immel picked up two individual wins each on the women's side. Giesler took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, notching two season-best times in the process. Hamblin won both breaststroke events on Friday evening, and Immel claimed her first regular-season collegiate wins in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle.
The men performed just as well seniors Zachary Cram and Markus Wennborg and juniors Michael Moore and Austin Winchester also picked up two individual wins each. Cram, Wennborg and Winchester won the 100 and 200-yard distances of their respective strokes backstroke for Cram, breaststroke for Wennborg and freestyle for Winchester. Moore picked up a pair of wins in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley events.
Friday evening Texas

Over 1,000 miles away, the Wolfpack women cracked open their session after finishing the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.49, the fastest time in the nation this season. Senior Katharine Berkoff outsplit Texas' Olivia Bray in leadoff by over a second, and junior Abby Arens brought the relay home in 21.74 to give NC State the win by 0.21 seconds.
The men swept two events during Friday's session, dominating Texas in the 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. Senior Nyls Korstanje, sophomore Aiden Hayes and senior Kacper Stokowski finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore David Curtiss posted a blazing-fast 19.06 to take first place in the 50-yard freestyle, followed closely by senior Noah Henderson.
The women's sole individual win came from Berkoff, who dipped under 22 seconds for the first time this season to take first place in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time of 21.90 is 14th-fastest in the nation this season.
Saturday morning Texas
Although the men didn't rack up quite as many first-place finishes as they did the previous evening, the Wolfpack won two relays in dominating fashion. In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, Curtiss cracked a 19.37 on the leadoff to give Hayes half a body-length lead heading into the second 50. Korstanje and junior Luke Miller, who won the 200-yard freestyle the night prior, brought NC State home with sub-19 splits. The men crushed their season-best in the 400-yard medley relay to beat Texas by almost three seconds.
In lieu of the women's 100-yard backstroke, Berkoff took home the women's only individual win of the morning with a blistering 47.87 in the 100-yard freestyle. She beat Texas' Kelly Pash by a mere 0.02 seconds, giving the Wolfpack some crucial points heading into the end of the meet.
NC State will return to Greensboro for the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships Feb. 14-18.

The swim & dive regular season has officially come to an end, and now NC State's nationally ranked teams look toward ACCs and NCAAs for a chance to pick up some hardware. Here's a breakdown after four months of dual meets and competitive swims.

Women wrap up difficult slate of regular-season meets

Sure, the No. 4 women lost twice this year an irregular occurrence as of late, thanks to Braden Holloway's ferocious tenure as head coach but after looking at the schedule, can you blame them? There wasn't much the Wolfpack women could do against the best two women's programs in the country, and it's impressive enough that they pulled off a victory against No. 3 Stanford.

It's unlikely that they'll bring home their first conference title since 2019 in February Virginia is just that good but don't count the women out of a strong showing at NCAAs. Given their incredible depth and tendency to pull off an important swim where it counts, I can see a third-place finish in NC State's future. Since the women's team is losing a talented slate of athletes this May, now's the time for the Wolfpack to send off its seniors with an incredible championship season.

Who's bringing home a conference championship?

Like I said, it won't be the women. Virginia's on track to pick up its 19th ACC title, and there's little Holloway and the rest of the team can do to stop the likes of Olympians Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass from racking up meet-winning points for the Cavaliers.

However, it's almost certain that the No. 4 men will see a second-straight conference title in their future. The next ACC team in the rankings is No. 13 Virginia Tech, and 2022 runner-up Louisville sits at No. 18. Given that the men have sat atop the rankings for the entirety of the regular season and that they currently hold six of the top times in the ACC so far this season, we're more than likely going to watch the Wolfpack nab its 32nd conference title.

Way too early: national championship picks

Since senior Kacper Stokowski currently holds the top time in the nation this season in the 100-yard backstroke, I'm expecting a repeat championship from one of NC State's best and brightest. Senior Katharine Berkoff has a good shot at doing the same, although she'll face tough competition from a number of phenomenal backstrokers at NCAAs. Granted, none of them have come close to touching her American record in the event at 58.74, but expect the women's 100-yard backstroke to be the one to watch at this year's national championships.

My sleeper pick for an individual national title is sophomore David Curtiss, who's 18.95 in the 50-yard freestyle currently sits at seventh in the country. One year after winning the ACC title but missing A-finals at NCAAs, Curtiss is in an extremely good position to pull off a top-three finish. He's been working hard, and dipping under 19 seconds during the regular season is no small feat in fact, he's only 0.12 behind the second-best performance in the country this season.

Some NCAA hardware in the men's future

The age-old question remains: will the men be able to pull off a top-three finish at NCAAs this year? The highest they've ever finished is fourth place, and they've done so six times. They certainly have the depth to perform with the talent of a top-three squad but have been shut out of the podium for years by the likes of California and Texas the latter of which being their only dual meet loss of the season. No. 1 Arizona State also poses a sizable threat this season, and it's likely that the Sun Devils will take the national championship in March.

That being said, I think the men have it in them to beat the odds and finally nab bronze. They certainly have individual national titles in their future Stokowski at the very least, and Curtiss or even junior Luke Miller in the 200-yard freestyle if we're lucky and thanks to Holloway's elite recruiting tactics, the depth is there. It'll just come down to A-final performances and a wealth of points from the consolation finalists.

  • The NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams saw another exciting day of competition at the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. The Pack had five members of the squads on the podium and looks to continue its success with two days of competition remaining.

Women's 400-yard individual medley:
Sophomore Grace Sheble fought all the way to the finish to earn a silver medal in the 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 4:04.98 seconds marks the second-fastest time in program history and a personal best time for the Richmond, Va. native. Swimming in the B final, Yara Hierath placed tenth with a personal best time (4:11.36). Caroline Sheble (4:17.10) and Brooke Travis (4:17.39) finished 21st and 22nd in the event, respectively.

Men's 400-yard individual medley:
Following the excitement built by Sheble in the previous event, Owen Lloyd took third place on the men's side, narrowly securing the spot on the podium. His finishing time (3:42.16) was a best time by three seconds and now stands as the fourth-fastest time in program history. Freshman Kyle Ponsler also posted a lifetime best (3:42.72), adding his name to the No. 16 spot on the all-time 18 & under records in the event. Will Gallant finished 12th (3:46.90) and James Plage took 18th (3:48.72).

Women's 100-yard butterfly:
Earning the first NCAA 'A' cut of her career, junior Abby Arens finished just off of the podium for fourth place (50.84), followed closely by graduate student Kylee Alons' 50.93 second race (fifth place). Sarah Watson went 53.02 for 16th, while Emma Muzzy swam the fastest time of her career for 21st (53.20).

Men's 100-yard butterfly:

Aiden Hayes led the way with a second place finish (44.66) and Nyls Korstanje joined him on the podium to claim the bronze medal (44.70). More known for his success in the backstroke events, Kacper Stokowski posted a best time to finish just off the podium in fourth (45.12). Swimming in the consolation final, Arsenio Bustos destroyed his competition to win the heat with a time (44.97) that would have placed fourth in the championship final.

Women's 200-yard freestyle:
Lowering her own program record set in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Tuesday, Abbey Webb landed just off the podium to take fourth place (1:43.84). The time marks the first time a Wolfpack woman has broken the 1:44 barrier. Joining Webb in the A final, Annabel Crush posted a time of 1:46.30 to take 8th place. Katherine Helms finished in 11th place (1:46.30) and Kay Foley finished 23rd (1:47.91) after setting a personal best time in prelims to win the first heat.
