The Stride Report website has the pack men #22 in their preseason rankings. Pretty solid respect considering the down year last year and losing our top 2 scorers from that team + veteran Nate Kawalec to a transfer. The writeup suggests a lot of it is them being bullish on Ian Shanklin's return to the grass and being a true front runner for the team.

I just started following cross country after the women's team won the national title last year...but only the women's so far. I don't know much of anything about the men's team. Glad to hear they may be top 25. I'll definitely get more familiar with them this year.

The men have historically been a consistently good program. Not quite at the level of the women and no national championships like the women can claim, but they made the nationals meet all but 2 years between 1995 and 2020 (missing last year). The peak of the program was probably the stretch between 1997-2001 where they finished 11th or better at nationals all 5 years including a 3rd place podium finish in 1999 with 4 all american runners.

Down year last year missing nationals, but Ian Shanklin redshirted cross country and then had a great season on the track, including a 13:23 5k that got him 9th place in a historically fast 5k final at outdoor nationals, that if he can translate to a 10k on the grass could have him be a top 15-20 runner, and even if it doesnt translate as well he should probably be an all american. Robinson Snider, the #3 runner from last year is listed on the roster and should return (xc and track historically have weirdly timed redshirt seasons, and eligiblity is weird with the covid years so its tough to know). Also Hannes Burger is supposed to return (again a slight unkown after redshirting last year) who was our 2nd scorer at nationals in 2020 and has a solid 13:51 5k pr on the track. Plus they bring in a couple of transfers who have top 5 scorer capability.

the last 2 guys id keep an eye on are Brett Gardner who is a sophomore who ran a very solid 8:37 steeplechase for 3rd place at ACC's last outdoor season and has a 3:43 1500 pr. Also Kevin Antczak, who is kind of the men's team version of Brooke Rauber. He finished 8th at high school cross country nationals in 2019 and has massive talent, still just kind of waiting on him to turn that corner and contribute at the college level.

Thanks for the overview. I'm planning on going to the Adidas challenge next month, and making the drive up to Charlottesville for the ACC championships. Mainly for the women, but I'll catch the men's races.

The Wolfpack men saw six runners finish in the top 10 with Gardner, junior Ian Harrison and junior J.J. Malach leading the way. The trio finished right behind first-place finisher Micah Gilpatric from Charleston Southern for second, third and fourth place, respectively. All three Wolfpack runners earned new personal bests with Gardner clocking in at 17:30.9, Harrison at 17:36.9 and Malach at 17:49.0.

"So far this year, I think it's going pretty well," said Gardner. "We basically packed together early and did what we said we were going to do."

The men's side saw graduate David Vorbach and junior Jake Toomey follow right behind in fifth and sixth, respectively, and sophomore Miles Ally rounding out the top 10 in eighth. Juniors Daniel McGoey and Zach Hughes finished in 19th and 28th while sophomore Wesley Larson rounded out the Pack's finishers in 43rd.

After a sixth place finish at the ACC championships a year ago, head coach Rollie Geiger is hoping to change things around in his 42nd year with the Wolfpack.

"I think we're gonna have a better squad than a year ago," Geiger said. "I think we're gonna be significantly better. But again, we're kind of growing into that. We had a couple of guys not in the lineup. Once they're in the lineup, I think we're pretty good.

The NC State men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2022 season in dominating fashion Friday evening with both teams claiming five of the top-six finishing positions in their respective races at the Adidas XC Challenge held at the WakeMed Soccer Park Cross Country Course in Cary.

The Stride Report did a group prediction for the Joe Piane Invitational this saturday with 3 of their writers.

For their Men's preview, 1 of the writers has the men finishing 5th, with Ian Shanklin predicted 10th in the field. Another writer has the men finishing 3rd, with Ian Shanklin 8th in the field. The final writer doesn't have NC State predicted top 5 (all they listed) but has Brett Gardner predicted 10th in the field.

The writer that has us finishing 3rd also answered NC State to the question If you were buying stock in a men's team from this field for the rest of the season, who would you choose?

The reasoning was that while we may not have the highest of ceilings with the roster, the floor seems to be pretty high and we should certainly be a NCAA qualifier and one of the better teams in the ACC this year. Also, that Ian Shanklin is a bit of a dark horse to see if he can recapture his star form from the 2021 track seasons.

NC State men finish a slightly disappointing 9th. This was not what i would expect to be their scoring lineup come nationals as Robinson Snider, Ian Harrison and Hannes Burger did not run. However they have not run this season yet so their status is unknown at this point.

Ian Shanklin finished 7th in a very strong season opener for him.

The men were slightly disappointing but when you consider the runners that sat out this race i still have confidence in the team.

The 3 runners that did run both last year and this year all improved their placings and times

Brett Gardner had a massive improvement from 111th last year to 21st and from 25:10 to 23:51.

Dan McGoey also had a big improvement from 129th to 57th and from 25:22 to 24:15

Jake Toomey also showed some incredible strides improving from 159th to 90th but dropping his time from 26:04 all the way to 24:34

We lost JJ Malach somewhere between the 3rd and 4th split markers, he was running with Toomey so he likely wouldn't have affected our score too much but it would show some stronger depth.

We also held out Robinson Snider, Ian Harrison, and Hannes Burger. Last year, Snider was our #2 finisher here with a 24:21, and he was our 3rd runner at both ACC's and Regionals so he will be a big presence assuming he is racing this season. Harrison wasn't a consistent top 5 scorer for us last year,. but did show some potential finishing 4th on the team at ACC's. Burger didn't race last year but would be a huge veteran presence having finished 2nd on the team and 72nd overall at the 2021 spring XC nationals (2020 meet delayed until 2021 spring).

The NC State women's cross country team, led by sophomore Katelyn Tuohy, got off to a hot start at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday morning in South Bend, Ind.

The Wolfpack women's team got the day going with a first-place finish in the Women's Blue 5000m, thanks in large part to Tuohy's first-place finish. NC State (55 points) finished ahead of New Mexico (68) and Alabama (70) in the event. It was the first race for the Wolfpack since the Adidas XC Challenge on September 16 in Cary.

The NC State women's cross country team finished with three runners in the top 15. The leader of the Pack was Tuohy, who crossed the finish line at 15:50, ahead of Alabama's Mercy Chelangat. Tuohy's teammates Samatha Bush (16:11.7) finished fifth and Sydney Seymour (16:11.9) finished sixth. Marlee Starliper was just outside the top 10, coming in 12th with a time of 16:21.9.

Ian Shanklin was NC State's top finisher in the men's Blue 5 mile, finishing seventh with a time of 23:25.2. As a team, the Pack finished ninth overall. Brett Gardner (23:51.0) and David Vorbach (24:08.1) rounded out N.C. State runners in the top 50, finishing 21st and 43rd, respectively.

Shannon Sefton finished eighth in the women's open 5000m, with a time of 17:13.2.

In the men's open five mile, Matthew Bogdan (25:12.9) finished 30th.

Up next: The Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisc. and the ECU Pirate Invitational.

The Stride Report updated their rankings for midseason.

In Team rankings, the men fell from 22nd to 24th. I thought that was a pretty generous amount of respect given to them as the 9th place finish last weekend wasn't a great result, but they noted that Robinson Snider and Hannes Burger did not run so they are keeping faith that the Pack can perform better once those two men are running again.

In Individual rankings Ian Shanklin moved from unranked to 32nd. I think he should probably be even higher than that after a great 7th place finish last weekend, but i guess poll inertia can exist here as well as it may be hard to move a guy up 25+ spots after only 1 race. A little surprised Brett Gardner wasn't listed in honorable mentions as well after a fantastic 21st place finish last weekend but if he can replicate that kind of effort in 10 days at Nuttycombe i expect he'll be top 50.

The NC State cross country teams are back in action this weekend, heading to Wisconsin for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour, as well as having select members participate in the ECU Pirate Invitational.

Both events will be held on Friday.

Annually one of the premier events in the nation, the Nuttycombe Invitational, held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis., will feature an 8-kilometer men's race and a 6-kilometer women's race.

The event also includes "B" races for both men and women.

The women's B race will start at noon and the men's B race will start at 12:40 p.m. The women's A race will start at 1:20 p.m., followed by the men's A race at 2 p.m.

The No. 1 NC State women's team will be one of 20 top-25 teams participating in the event.

The Wolfpack women have won both events they've competed in this season, capturing the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary and the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend., Ind. At the Joe Piane Invitational, junior Katelyn Tuohy set the course record with a winning time of 15:50 to help NC State get past the second-ranked New Mexico Lobs and sixth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
Tuohy won National and ACC honors of the week for her effort.

The NC State men's cross country team won the Adidas XC Challenge to open the season before taking ninth place at the Joe Piane Invitational.

The Men's B Race is in. We ran John Malach, Miles Ally, Matthew Bogdan and surprisingly Hannes Burger (thought he would be in the varsity race if he was good to go).

Bogdan led the way finishing 68th in 25:08. Malach finished 92nd in 25:29. Ally finished 100th in 25:36. Burger DNF'd. He was running in the back of the lead pack/front of the chase pack through 6k, and was sitting in 11th at the 6k split. Not sure what happened from that point.

The men finish 10th at Nuttycombe. I can't stress how big of a result this could be for our ncaa at large chances (if we dont get top 2 at regionals). Beat a lot of good teams today (inlcuding UNC ). And that was with a poor (by his standards) performance from ian Shanklin who lost 43 places over the last 2k.

Brett Gardner 48th in 23:46
Ian Harrison 53rd in 23:48 (1st race of year)
Robinson Snider 72nd in 23:56 (1st race of year)
Ian Shanklin 79th in 23:57
Daniel McGoey 115th in 24:10

Travis Koekemoer 203rd in 24:56
Kevin Antczak 208th in 24:57

the poll doesn't really mean anything for the weird points system they use to determine at large places in the NCAA field, but for reference of the quality of the teams we beat today. Essentially you earn points for team you beat that ends up in the field. This is important because if you have an off day at regionals you want to be able to rely on your performances where you beat qualified teams to get in. Obviously there is a lot of running left and some of these teams probably aren't as good as rankings suggest, but you can get an eye on the number of teams we beat that should be competing for top 2 AQ spot in their region which would earn us points.

NC State 10th place (unranked in national top 30 poll and ranked 7th in SE region)

Portland 11th place (31st in poll, first team in also receiving votes, 6th in west region)
Oregon 12th place (24th in poll, 3rd in west region)
Syracuse 13th place (9th in poll, 1st in NE Region)
UNC 14th place (10th in poll, 2nd in SE region)
Washington 15th place (26th in poll, 5th in West region)
Utah State 16th place (23rd in poll, 5th in Mountain region)
Georgetown 17th place (28th in poll, 3rd in Mid Atlantic region)
Duke 19th place (6th in SE region)
Michigan 20th place (5th in great lakes region)

Iowa St 22nd place (11th in poll, 3rd in Midwest region)
Michigan St 23rd place (27th in poll, 3rd in Great lakes region)
Providence 25th place (4th in NE region)
Gonzaga 26th place (14th in poll, 2nd in West region)

NC State men's and women's cross country teams made a pair of road trips to the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin and the ECU Pirate Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina to round out their regular season. With the ACC Championships just two weeks away, these meets provided one final tune-up for the Wolfpack heading into the postseason.

Nuttycombe Invitational

The No. 1 women's team secured the top spot out of 36 teams in Madison. The Pack's one-two punch of junior Katelyn Tuohy and senior Kelsey Chmiel took first and second place, respectively, in the women's 6k championship.

Tuohy led the field with a stellar performance, as her time of 19:44.3 lagged just 1.2 seconds shy of her collegiate personal best. Chmiel secured silver for the Wolfpack, clocking in at 19:49.4.

Senior Sam Bush and graduates Sydney Seymour and Nevada Mareno were the other runners that scored for NC State, finishing 18th, 23rd and 36th, respectively. Mareno also came extremely close to her personal best, missing by just 2.2 seconds with a 20:25.3.

Bush came up agonizingly short in a three-way dash for 16th place behind Stanford's Zofia Dudek and Notre Dame's Olivia Markezich, respectively, as less than one-tenth of a second separated the three runners. On the flip side, Seymour eked out 23rd with a time of 20:17.8 while three runners trailed within 0.6 seconds of her, including two for New Mexico.

Redshirt senior Mariah Howlett, junior Gionna Quarzo and sophomore Brooke Rauber rounded out the action of the Wolfpack in the championship race. Howlett clocked in at 20:29.4 for 45th place, just 2.3 seconds short of her personal-best time, but Quarzo actually reached her personal-best mark, finishing 48th with a time of 20:31.8. Rauber finished at 21:02.0 for 124th place.

The men's team finished 10th out of 33 teams at the 8k championship race. Juniors Brett Gardner and Ian Harrison were the Pack's top two performers, finishing 48th and 53th, respectively. Also scoring for the men were graduate Robinson Snider in 72nd, graduate Ian Shanklin in 79th and junior Dan McGoey in 115th.

Four of the Wolfpack's top five finishers set personal bests in the race. Only Shanklin and juniors Travis Koekemoer and Kevin Antczak, who finished 203rd and 208th, respectively, missed out on the party.

ECU Pirate Invitational

While the Pack didn't field enough runners to place in the men's or women's team standings at the ECU Pirate Invitational, the event featured first-place finishes from NC State runners competing unattached. Freshman Grace Hartman took the top spot in the women's 6k with a time of 20:53.59 while graduate Gavin Gaynor earned first in the men's 8k with a 24:15.04.

The Wolfpack sent three total runners for the women's race, each of them finishing in the top 10. Freshman Briley Bickerstaff also ran unattached, finishing fourth at 21:33.60. Redshirt junior Lulu Black was the runner officially representing NC State; she clocked a 22:14.08 to finish 10th.

Six total men's runners made the trip from Raleigh to Greenville, all finishing in the top 25. Junior Zach Hughes, senior Ben Verchick and redshirt junior Kyle Durham officially represented the Pack, finishing sixth, ninth and 14th, respectively. Other than Gaynor, freshmen Ryan Motondo and Patrick Gibbons ran unattached, with the latter two finishing 10th and 25th, respectively.

The stride report put out a quick analysis of all the teams from the Nuttycombe Invitational. Their summary basically matches my own. They preached patience in judgment after the underwhelming result two weeks ago considering who didn't run for state. And the patience was rewarded with Robinson Snider and Ian Harrison coming up big as the 2nd and 3rd scorers for NC State. Ian Shanklin has the potential to slot in 40-50 spots better than he did today giving this team more scoring upside.

So while its clear that we dont have the scoring power to compete with the upper echelon of teams, if guys have good days we can put up very respectable results in these high powered meets.

Really interested to see continued development for the rest of the season. If Gardner and Harrison can continue this trajectory then that is a really solid starting point for building a top 5 for next season.

The Stride Report put out their updated team rankings as we've reached the end of the regular season. NC State Men have moved up 8 spots in their rankings to 16th. It should be noted that the very very good 10th place result at Nuttycombe was still with a poor(er) result from Ian Shanklin, as the 4th runner on the team after being 1st at Joe Piane two weeks prior. Shanklin has All american potential so 79th at Nuttycombe was a disappointment. But even with that, the return of Ian Harrison and Robinson Snider, and the continued excellent consistency of Brett Gardner propelled the NC State men to a top 10 finish. It should also be noted that the gap between the 4th and 5th runners is the biggest weakness (assuming Shanklin finds his form again). That being said this race was run without preseason presumed scoring runner Hannes Burger, who ran in the B race and is still working his way to fitness, as well as David Vorbach who was the teams #3 runner at Joe Piane and did not race this week. The potential on this team is strong and i can't wait to see how they continue on during championship season. \

The NCAA also released their updated regional rankings, and State moved up to 3rd from 7th, only behind UVA and Wake Forest. The NCAA full top 25 poll will come out tomorrow.

The Stride Report's men's ACC's preview is pretty interesting. They have ND and Wake 1-2, which is pretty hard to complain about. Those 2 teams have been a step ahead of the others so far this season.

They do pick NC State 3rd. 3rd-6th is pretty close though. They're counting on a better performance from Shanklin and maybe a better showing for 5th spot (especially if Hannes Berger runs).

They pick Ian Shanklin 4th in the field.
