Since beating Wake Forest at home in perhaps its best win of the season Sunday, Sept. 18, the NC State women's soccer team has had to battle through the toughest part of its schedule. After facing some challenging opponents, both at home and on the road, and battling through some struggles on offense, the Pack has gone 1-4-1 since its big win against the Demon Deacons.

This season, ACC soccer has been as ruthless and challenging as ever, and it seems as though NC State has learned that lesson first hand over the past month. While it's no different than any other year, it's safe to say that the Wolfpack has definitely been given fits by its competition, especially on the offensive side. So without further ado, let's look at some of the most important stats to break down the red-and-white's past month.

4 - Scoreless games since Wake Forest

After the Pack's 2-1 victory against the Demon Deacons, it seemed as though NC State would be able to dish out some pain to the rest of the ACC. Since then, however, the Pack's offense has come to a bit of a standstill, recording four scoreless games, all of which accounted for the red-and-white's four losses over this time period.

Against the more experienced, tougher and decorated defenses that the ACC sports, it's more than a challenge to score goals on a consistent basis. Oftentimes, however, the Pack's lack of offensive connections, especially shots on goal, leads to turnovers and a lack of pressure on its opposition.

115-48 - How much NC State has been outshot by its opponents

Over these past six games, the Pack has been drastically outshot by its opponents. While this number shows how many shots the back line is allowing, it's ultimately more reflective on NC State's offensive unit.

With a lack of consistent offensive pressure created by controlling the ball and putting shots up, it's hard to threaten opponents on the scoreboard, and that's exactly what has happened to NC State over the past month. Between some formidable opposing defenses and some shortcomings in the attacking third, NC State has been dwarfed by its opponents in terms of shots.

Simply put: The less you shoot, the less you score.

16-5 - How much NC State has been outscored by opponents

Similarly to the last stat, NC State has also been dramatically outscored by its opponents over the past month of play.

With ACC offenses being just as effective as their defenses, it's no surprise that NC State has been scored on during this stretch. However, to have such a large gap between its opponents and itself is once again a reflection of a lack of offensive efficiency.

While able to win its one game during this period 2-1 against Clemson, NC State was also defeated by a whopping score of 6-0 against Duke. Going forward, an increased offensive effort will be required if the Pack is to find success.

It certainly has the playmakers to get it done, however. Senior forward Jameese Joseph leads the team in goals with seven, while fellow senior forward Leyah Hall-Robinson leads the squad in assists with five. Less turnovers and more threatening connections between teammates in the attacking third is bound to lead to more shots, and therefore more goals. Once again though, this is easier said than done against such impressive opponents.

10 - Saves by Echezarreta in a career day against UNC

Along with Joseph, junior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta is perhaps the Wolfpack's most important player on the roster. She's consistently able to keep a cool head in between the posts, making athletic and clutch saves night-in, night-out.

Against UNC-Chapel Hill, however, she was on another level.

Echezarreta recorded a career-high 10 saves while visiting the rival Tar Heels. Despite her team losing 2-0, the junior made save after save in what was a career performance. The Pack's been able to display some staunt defense so far this season, with Echezarreta leading the way. But against tougher and tougher competition, it becomes harder and harder to keep opponents off the board. Nevertheless, Echezarreta still displays some great ability in goal and is usually a bright spot for the Wolfpack.

Despite the 1-4-1 record over the past six matches, NC State is still on pace to finish 2022 in similar fashion to its 2021 season. The red-and-white finished that season at an even .500, going 9-9-2. Currently, NC State sits at 7-5-4, and with three games left, has a chance to once again achieve a nine-win season.

For that to happen, however, it'll have to put all its focus on its offensive effort. Putting more shots up and applying pressure on defenses will allow NC State to finish its season with some wins, setting the squad up for a favorable draw in the NCAA tournament.

The NC State women's soccer team dropped its regular-season home finale 1-0 to Louisville on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

The Wolfpack (7-6-4, 2-5-1) allowed just one goal behind a career-high 14 saves from goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, but NC State was unable to tally a goal of its own in the 1-0 defeat.

After Louisville (6-6-2, 3-5-0) grabbed the opener on a counter-attack goal from Corinne Dente in the 29th minute, the Pack almost leveled the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute behind a shot from Leyah Hall-Robinson.

In the second half, Hall-Robinson again almost tallied the tying goal when her shot forced a save from Louisville goalkeeper Erynn Floyd. NC State's best chance of the night came in the 68th minute when Mia Vaughan's effort from outside the box forced Floyd to make a diving save to her left.

NC State held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, earning four of its corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.

Hall-Robinson paced the Pack with a pair of shots, firing one on target. Annika Wohner, Jenna Butler and Vaughan each recorded one shot apiece.

Graduate defender and captain Lulu Guttenberger tied an NC State record Thursday night with the 92nd start of her career. Her 92 starts tie Jill Rutten (1986-1990) for the NC State record for career starts.

In NC State women's soccer's regular season home finale, the Wolfpack suffered a 1-0 loss to the Louisville Cardinals on Thursday, Oct. 20.
Now 0-3-1 in its last four matches, it's safe to say NC State (7-6-4, 2-5-1 ACC) has hit more than a skid in its play. Season-long problems within the attacking third once again exposed themselves against the Cardinals (6-6-2, 3-5 ACC) in the Pack's final game at home for the 2022 regular season.
Despite the lack of production on offense, junior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta continues to put up career-defining performances in goal. Just two matches after establishing a career-high 10 saves, the junior once again eclipsed her personal best, recording a whopping 14 saves against the Cardinals.

Game after game, Echezarreta repeatedly acts as the Wolfpack's anchor, and her stellar effort against the Cardinals single handedly kept NC State in the match.
Like most other losses on the season, the Wolfpack was dramatically outshot. Louisville tallied 24 total shots on the night, and more impressively, sent 15 of those shots on goal. Meanwhile, NC State only put up five shots and two on goal. Because of this gap, a significant lack of pressure on the offensive side combined with a trend of poor passes and turnovers spelled the Pack's defeat.
"We just can't piece it together right now," said head coach Tim Santoro. "We have different things on different nights that are good, but then we have different things on different nights that are bad, and we're in a bad little direction right now."
Furthermore, a lackadaisical effort from NC State, especially after Louisville's goal, didn't help the red-and-white. In contrast, the Cardinals entered the match with high energy and were avid to attack from the starting whistle, nearly scoring in the second minute of the match.
Some scoreless back and forth play ensued, but soon enough Louisville earned a 29th-minute goal that ultimately proved enough to win the Cardinals the match.

Even with Louisville controlling a majority of the first half possession, NC State still had its fair share of chances in the first 45. The red-and-white's attacks, most of which were helped along by senior forward Jameese Joseph, threatened the Cardinal defense quite a few times. However, the finishing touches on those attacks never seemed to fully materialize, resulting in a 1-0 advantage for the visitors at the break.
The same story ensued in the second half, with possession after possession flaming out due to intercepted passes, turnovers or a lack of passes through on goal. While the Pack searched for the equalizer, an overall disappointing effort inside the attacking third resulted in a scoreless night. Meanwhile, Echezarreta was the only one keeping it close thanks to her incredible performance in between the posts.
After a series of subpar performances, re-establishing the level of play and confidence that the Wolfpack toted at the beginning of the season will be integral to ending the regular season on a high note.
"Anytime confidence is a little shattered, it's a tough thing to get back unless you get a result," Santoro said. "We just have to keep going and try to get it resolved."
Opportunities to regain that confidence and find a groove offensively will come in the Pack's final two games of the regular season, both of which will take place away from Dail Soccer Field.
"We still have a couple of games to clean this up and get where we need to go," Santoro said. "But we're just leaving it late here. We have to put it all together for a couple of days."
A date with the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, Oct. 23 is next on the docket for NC State. Kickoff in Charlottesville, Virginia is scheduled for 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State holds a 13-28-4 record against Virginia in the all-time series history. The Pack's last win over the Cavaliers came in Raleigh on Sept. 24, 2009, when the Pack earned a 2-1 win over No. 14 Virginia. Former member of the Pack Paige Dugal recorded a brace in the 2-1 win, scoring in the fifth minute and 88th minute to secure the victory. NC State's last win in Charlottesville came on Oct. 10, 1995, when the Pack earned a 1-0 victory.

SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia (11-2-3. 4-2-2) holds the sixth and final spot in the ACC Tournament with two conference matches to play. The Cavaliers are 8-1-2 at home this season, dropping their only home contest to then-No. 3 Florida State on Oct. 6. The Cavs have shut out their opponents 10 times, including three times in league play. Haley Hopkins paces Virginia with 10 goals and 24 points, burying three of her strikes for game-winning tallies.

In its second to last game of the regular season, the NC State women's soccer team lost its second straight game, falling to the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers by a score of 4-0.

The powerful Cavalier (12-2-3, 5-2-2 ACC) squad overwhelmed a Wolfpack (7-7-4, 2-6-1 ACC) team that hasn't seen the win column since September. Virginia showed domination in every facet of the game, firing a barrage of shots on offense and pitching a shutout on defense.

After the Pack's ninth scoreless game of the season, the squad falls to 0-4-1 in the month of October. The red-and-white desperately tried to get back on track against one of the best teams in the country, but the Cavaliers had none of it.

Virginia imposed its dominance as soon as the first whistle sounded, scoring a goal in the third minute to gain a 1-0 lead before fans even settled into their seats. The Cavs weren't done yet, however, scoring again less than 10 minutes later.

After its opponents jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, NC State was able to ward off the Cavalier attack for the remainder of the first half but couldn't find any traction on offense, putting up just two shots in the period, seven less than Virginia.

NC State didn't fare much better in the second half and was once again outshot by seven. Despite the nine total shots in the match, only three were on goal, making it a relatively easy day for the Virginia defense.

The Cavaliers, however, just kept on rolling after the intermission, netting two more goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Similar to their first half scoring spree, the Cavs' lightning-fast attack shut down the Pack's hopes of getting back into the game.

The final few minutes saw desperation shots from NC State, with senior forwards Jameese Joseph and Alexis Strickland leading the offensive effort. But it was too little, too late as the Cavs exited the game with an unscathed 4-0 victory.

With its final game of the season on the horizon, the red-and-white has one more opportunity to earn a win in the 2022 regular season. NC State has the ability to do so, but with the current rut the Wolfpack is in, a win at Syracuse might be the most important one of the season if the Pack can get it done.

NC State's final game of the season is set for Thursday, Oct. 27, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

The NC State women's soccer team (7-7-4, 2-6-1 ACC) wraps up its regular-season schedule at Syracuse on Thursday.

Kickoff for Thursday night's match is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. Live stats will also be available via StatBroadcast.

SERIES HISTORY
After dropping the first two matchups in the series, NC State has won four straight against Syracuse to hold a 4-2 advantage in the series history. Three of those four wins over the Orange have come by three goals, including a 3-0 win in Raleigh this past season. The Pack is 1-1 at Syracuse, coming home with a 6-3 win after a successful trip on Oct. 4, 2018

SCOUTING THE ORANGE
Syracuse (8-7-2, 1-6-2 ACC) opened the season strong in nonconference play, holding a 7-1 against non-ACC opponents. The Orange notched four multi-goal victories in nonconference action, dropping its only non-ACC matchup to UConn. In ACC play, the Orange is 0-3-2 in its past five matchups, earning draws against then-No. 2 Virginia and Clemson while dropping contests to Boston College, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. Chelsea Domond paces Syracuse with five goals, five assists and 15 points.

The NC State women's soccer team rallied from a halftime deficit to record a 1-1 draw at Syracuse, closing out its regular-season schedule with a point on the road.

After Syracuse (8-7-3, 1-6-3) opened the scoring with a penalty-kick goal in the fourth minute, NC State responded with the equalizer in the 70th minute when Jameese Joseph fired home a right-footed finish past the Syracuse goalkeeper. Joseph's strike marked her team-high eighth goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1.

NC State (7-7-5, 2-6-2) increased offensive pressure following Joseph's equalizer, firing four shots over the final 20 minutes in search of a game-winning goal. With less than a minute remaining, Joseph fired a shot on target, but Syracuse goalkeeper Michaela Walsh secured the draw with her final save of the night.

Despite allowing the opening goal, NC State outshot Syracuse 12-8 in the first half, firing three of its attempts on target. Leyah Hall-Robinson paced the Pack with five shots in the opening 45 minutes, recording a shot on goal in the 19th minute to force a save from Walsh.

The Pack logged 18 total shots, five of which were on frame. NC State also recorded five corner kicks over the 90 minutes.

Joseph led NC State with six shots, registering two attempts on target. Mia Vaughan provided the Pack with 46 minutes off the bench, ranking third on the team with three shots.

With her 94th career start, captain Lulu Guttenberger set a new NC State record for career appearances in a Wolfpack uniform, surpassing Jill Rutten's previous record of 93.

In the final game of the 2022 regular season, NC State women's soccer traveled to Syracuse, and recorded a 1-1 draw with the Orange on Thursday, Oct. 27.
After going 0-4-1 in its last five matches, the Wolfpack (7-7-5, 2-6-2 ACC) once again found itself down early on. However, the Pack battled back, drawing even with the Orange (8-7-3, 1-5-3 ACC) in the 70th minute thanks to a clutch goal from senior forward Jameese Joseph.
Joseph's eighth goal of the season came at an opportune moment, stopping the bleeding of NC State's two-game losing streak. Joseph leads the team in goals, a majority of which have come late in games when the Pack needs it the most. It wasn't any different against Syracuse, as her right-footed strike equalized it for NC State at just the right moment.
While Joseph evened the score, Syracuse was able to establish a quick 1-0 lead right from the starting whistle. The Orange earned a penalty kick on its first possession, and slotted it away to jump ahead of NC State. Similar to its last game, the Pack conceded a goal within the first five minutes. This time however, NC State was able to slow down its opposition and find a goal of its own.

In contrast to most of its other games this season, NC State kept pace with its opponents in terms of shots, and even outshot its opponents 12-8 in the first half. Despite the large amount of shots, NC State couldn't bag the equalizer until the 70th minute.
Meanwhile, Syracuse fired 19 shots, just one more than NC State. Junior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta who's been a star for the red-and-white all season, closed out the regular season with another strong performance, tallying six saves. She fended off a persistent Syracuse attack, one that put up nearly 20 shots on goal and nine corner kicks.
With NC State putting up a large amount of shots, and earning a point on the road, the Wolfpack put up a solid outing in its final game of its season, especially after dropping its last two matches.
While this is the last game of its regular season, NC State will likely see more action in the NCAA tournament, which starts in early November.

Another year, another NCAA tournament berth for NC State women's soccer. At this point, it's routine for the Wolfpack, as head coach Tim Santoro and his squad have earned a spot in the tourney for the sixth consecutive fall season.

NC State has been able to make perennial postseason appearances, consistently reaching the second or third round of the tournament under the guidance of Santoro. But this year's effort isn't like any other as this will be the last run for some of the Pack's best players.

Graduate defenders Lulu Guttenberger and Jenna Butler have been there for the majority of the Wolfpack's six-year postseason streak. Through thick and thin, the two have held down NC State's back line, giving opponents fits anytime they step on the pitch. With their final games in a red and white jersey looming, they'll look to put the finishing touches on some legendary careers.

The first test in this year's tournament will come against UCF. Like most years, NC State is set to host in its first round match, but this bout isn't a guaranteed win for the Wolfpack. The Knights pose a very real threat, and even boasted a better record than NC State this season.

However, the Pack has had no trouble in sending opposing teams packing in the first round in past seasons. In its last three appearances, NC State ripped through South Florida, Navy and Northwestern in the first round, outscoring those opponents 6-0 combined. Furthermore, NC State has played much better competition than UCF as the Pack had to fight tooth and nail through a challenging ACC schedule this season.

While that tough schedule has left NC State with a less than desirable 7-7-5 record, its competition may have given the squad the experience and challenge it needs to find success in the postseason.

With Guttenberger and Butler giving NC State all the veteran leadership it would need, especially on the defensive side, it'll be up to an inconsistent offense to get on the board versus its opponents in the tournament. Senior forward Jameese Joseph has been a walking highlight reel this season and as NC State's best attacker, Joseph will need to keep doing what she's been so good at this whole season scoring.

Pacing the team in goals with eight, Joseph has the ball skills, speed and scoring proficiency to change games on a whim. She's lethal in the clutch as well, scoring many of her goals in the waning moments of matches when her team needs it the most. NC State will be looking to Joseph to do her thing once again against UCF, but she'll need help from the rest of the offense to play complimentary attacking soccer.

Fellow senior forwards Leyah Hall-Robinson and Alexis Strickland have certainly put their fair share of work in on the offensive side. Hall-Robinson, who leads the team in assists with five, will need to put her skills to work to rectify an inconsistent offense that tends to stall out within the final 20 yards. Sophomore and senior midfielders Annika Wohner and Jaiden Thomas have also gotten in on the offensive action, each boasting one goal and four assists on the season. NC State needs a group effort in order to complete passes and get shots up, especially because this has been a recurring issue at times this season.

Last but certainly not least, junior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta has been on a tear this season in between the posts. She has broken her career-high record in goals not once, but twice this season by recording 10 saves at North Carolina and a whopping 14 saves against Louisville. Echezarreta completes the staunch defense created by Guttenberger and Butler's dominating presence and is sure to frustrate the Knights more than a few times in the first round.

Beyond the first round, however, is where things get infinitely tougher for NC State. If the Pack does manage to down UCF, the tournament draw has the red-and-white set to face the blue-and-gold of UCLA. As a No. 1 seed, the Bruins are no joke and will give NC State all it can handle and more in the second round. While a second round appearance is yet to be secured for the Wolfpack, a win in this matchup would prove to be one of the biggest in program history.

For now, however, the Wolfpack has its sights set on UCF and will no doubt benefit from the energetic atmosphere at Dail Soccer Field.

With everything on the line, NC State is set to do what it does best and battle the Knights on Sunday, Nov. 13. Kickoff at Dail is set for noon.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
UCF, the American Athletic Conference's regular-season champion, went undefeated in the regular season in conference play with a 7-0-1 record. UCF fell in penalty kicks to eventual AAC Tournament champion Memphis in the AAC Semifinals. The Knights have not lost a game in regulation since a 2-1 defeat at North Carolina on Sept. 11, a span of 63 days. UCF scored first in the road defeat in Chapel Hill. The Knights earned draws against four NCAA Tournament teams -- LSU (1-1), Utah Valley (0-0), Texas (2-2) and Memphis (0-0). The Knights also earned a 3-1 win over FGCU, another NCAA Tournament qualifier.

Six Knights earned All-AAC honors, including AAC Offensive Player of the Year Kristen Scott and AAC Goalkeeper of the Year Caroline DeLisle. Dayana Martin and Darya Rajaee also earned First Team All-AAC honors, while freshman Mia Asenjo earned a spot on the AAC All-Rookie Team. Scott enters the NCAA Tournament with a team-high nine goals and 22 points despite missing four games due to injury. DeLisle enters the NCAA Tournament with a .833 save percentage, 0.68 goals allowed average and nine shutouts.

The NC State women's soccer team fell in penalty kicks (1-1, 4-2 on PKs) to No. 20 UCF in the NCAA First Round on Sunday at Dail Soccer Stadium.

After 110 minutes and the score tied at 1-1, the Wolfpack (7-7-6) and Knights (9-2-6) entered a penalty shootout to settle the 1-1 draw. Goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, who made six saves in Sunday's match, saved the opening penalty try from UCF's Ariel Young to give NC State an early advantage.

The Wolfpack then drilled its next two shots behind makes from graduate students Lulu Guttenberger and Jenna Butler to take a 2-1 lead. After Sanja Homann tied it at 2-2 on UCF's third attempt, Knights' goalkeeper Caroline DeLisle denied Mia Vaughan and Echezarreta from the penalty spot before Darya Rajaee sealed it for UCF with the Knights' fourth penalty make of the shootout.

After scoreless first half, NC State jumped ahead in the 53rd minute when Annika Wohner converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-0. A strike from Alexis Strickland hit the hand of a UCF player in the box, earning the Pack a penalty kick.

UCF then tied the match in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick goal of its own. Freshman defender Taylor Chism was called for a foul in the box before Rajaee converted the penalty shot to knot the match at 1-1.

NC State fired three shots, including one on goal from Jaiden Thomas, over the final 18 minutes of the second half. The Pack then recorded a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime period to increase pressure on the Knights.
