Pretty convincing victory. It could have been 4-0. They had one goal taken away on a questionable off-sides call, and at least two other near goals, including a header that hit the top cross bar. Just guessing from watching, I would say the Wolfpack had an advantage on shots on goal of something like 6-2.

SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's matchup against Rhode Island will mark the first all-time meeting between the Wolfpack and Rams. NC State's last matchup against an Atlantic 10 program was against its Sunday opponent, VCU. The Wolfpack defeated VCU 2-1 on Feb. 28, 2021, in Richmond, Virginia

Pack women are ranked #23 by Top Drawer Soccer.

https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-national-rankings/women

Man, the ACC is absolutely LOADED in women's soccer. According the coaches poll, FSU is #1, Duke #2, Virginia #4, UNC #10, Notre Dame #16, and Clemson #25.

I'm just starting to follow women's college soccer. I know that the Wolfpack women have historically not been very strong. But that appears to be changing here in the last 5 years, making the sweet 16 at the NCAA tournament in 3 of the last five years. And they beat UNC and Duke last year.

And on the surface it could appear daunting for the Wolfpack to raise the caliber of the program with such stiff competition in the ACC. But look at the Wolfpack women's tennis team as an example, who were historically mediocre. They faced a similar situation, with UNC, Duke, and Virginia dominating the ACC in women's tennis. But they have elevated the program to a top 10 team over the last 3 years, and now probably top 5 going into this coming season.

The NC State women's soccer team scored all four of its goals in the opening half to trounce Rhode Island 4-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

The Wolfpack (1-0) scored all four of its goals within a 23-minute stretch in the first half, peppering the Rhode Island goal with 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes.

NC State opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Jenna Butler and Leyah Hall-Robinson combined to find Alexis Strickland in the box for the Pack's first goal of the season. Butler played a pass down to Hall-Robinson down the right side of the pitch before Hall-Robinson delivered the decisive pass to Strickland to make it 1-0.

The Wolfpack doubled its lead less than 11 minutes later when forward Jameese Joseph threaded a ball behind Rhode Island's back line to Hall-Robinson to make it 2-0. Hall-Robinson gathered Joseph's pass and dribbled around URI starting goalkeeper Faith Hutchins to bury the ball into the back of the net.

Strickland then secured her first-career brace when Hall-Robinson logged her fourth point of the night, sending in a cross for Strickland to head home to make it 3-0 in the 30th minute. Hall-Robinson's two assists in the Wolfpack's opening-night victory marked a career high. She also tied a career high with four points.

Less than two minutes after subbing on, freshman Taylor Chism registered her first goal with the Wolfpack to make it 4-0 in the 36th minute. After earning a corner kick, Butler rose up to meet Brianna Weber's cross, smacking her shot off the crossbar. Annika Wohner then sent a shot on target before Chism cleaned up the rebound for her first-collegiate goal.

Seven members of the Pack made their NC State debuts Madison Reid, Sarah Arnold, Eliza Rich, Kayla Siddiqi, Cienna Kim, Brooklyn Holt and Chism. Holt also recorded her first-career start after featuring in NC State's first starting 11 of 2022.

Goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta made four saves to help NC State notch its first clean sheet of the season.

Senior forward Jameese Joseph buried a game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift the NC State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over VCU on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Less than 10 minutes after VCU (0-1-1) tied the match at 1-1 behind a goal from Aisha Maughan, the Wolfpack attacked quickly to turn a tie into a late victory. Forward Alexis Strickland received a ball near midfield, spun away from her defender and weighted a through ball to Joseph for the game-winning strike. Joseph needed only a few dribbles to cut inside and unleash a right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner of the VCU goal.

Despite outshooting VCU 9-4 in the second half, NC State (2-0) allowed the equalizer when Anna Bagley found Maughan inside the box for the Rams' opening goal. The Wolfpack increased pressure on VCU following Maughan's strike, firing three shots and earning three corner kicks before Joseph notched the go-ahead goal.

Heavy rain slowed play in the opening 45 minutes, but the Wolfpack netted the opening goal on a quick break with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Jaiden Thomas played a pass down the right flank to Fernanda Soto, who took only a few touches before finding Annika Wohner in the box for her first goal of the season. Wohner's strike gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead entering the halftime break.

A lunging save from Wolfpack goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta kept NC State in front in the 60th minute. NC State then logged the next four shots, including efforts from Leyah Hall-Robinson and Annika Wohner that forced saves from VCU goalkeeper Whitney Horton in the 68th and 69th minutes.

The Wolfpack outshot VCU 13-10 in Sunday's matchup, firing six attempts on target. Echezarreta tallied four saves on the afternoon.

UP NEXT
NC State will continue its four-game homestand to open the season when the Wolfpack hosts Campbell on Thursday night. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Fighting Camels is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.

Two days after netting the game-winning goal against VCU, NC State women's soccer forward Jameese Joseph was named TopDrawerSoccer's National Player of the Week on Tuesday morning.

Joseph, a 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree and Preseason All-ACC Team member, logged a goal and an assist between NC State's two matches over its opening week. The Beltsville, Maryland native opened her 2022 campaign with an assist against Rhode Island, threading a pass behind the Rams' back line to Leyah Hall-Robinson for NC State's second of four goals in a 4-0 victory.

The senior then tallied her first goal of the season in the 87th minute on Sunday, collecting a through ball from Alexis Strickland before striding into the box and finishing with a right-footed shoot into the bottom-right corner of the goal. Joseph's goal lifted NC State to a 2-1 victory over VCU.

The No. 21 NC State women's soccer team will open another week at Dail Soccer Stadium when in-state foe Campbell makes the short trip to Raleigh on Thursday. Kickoff for Thursday night's game is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.

SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's matchup against Campbell will mark the 17th all-time meeting between the two programs. NC State has never lost to the Fighting Camels, holding a 14-0-2 record against its in-state foe. NC State faced Campbell twice in 2021, once in the spring and once in the fall. The Wolfpack won the first matchup 1-0 on Feb. 16, 2021, before splitting the points on the road in a 1-1 tie on Aug. 26, 2021.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING CAMELS
Campbell opened its 2022 campaign 0-1-1, earning a home draw against Mercer before falling 5-1 at ACC opponent Clemson. The Fighting Camels finished the 2021 season 12-4-2, defeating USC Upstate 2-0 on Oct. 23 to clinch the Big South Regular Season Championship. First-year head coach Jeff Gross arrives at Campbell after serving as associate head coach at UNC Greensboro the past two seasons.

Senior forward Jameese Joseph made it two straight games with a late game-winning goal as the No. 21 NC State women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Campbell Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Following a Campbell corner kick with a minute remaining, NC State's Jaiden Thomas started a breakaway with a pinpoint long ball from the Wolfpack's own end, finding Joseph after a bounce for the winning strike. Joseph fought off jersey pulls and netted the game-winning goal with her right foot.

Just her right foot.

Joseph's late winner came only a moment after a Campbell defender clipped off her right shoe. She gathered herself a few steps inside the box before burying the ball into the back of the net.

NC State (3-0) increased pressure in the final 45 minutes, outshooting Campbell (0-2-1) 7-1 in the second half. The Wolfpack tied the Fighting Camels with three shots on target.

One of the Wolfpack's best chances came in the 69th minute when Fernanda Soto struck the crossbar from outside the box. Lulu Guttenberger then fired a shot on target for the Wolfpack in the 85th minute, forcing a save from Campbell goalkeeper Stephanie Martelli.

In net, goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta finished with three saves to clinch her second clean sheet of the season. Thomas' assist on the game-winning goal makes it back-to-back games with an assist for the senior.

With the win, NC State moves to 3-0 for the first fall season since 2017. The victory also extends NC State's unbeaten record over the Fighting Camels to 15-0-2 all-time.

UP NEXT
NC State will conclude its four-game homestand to open the 2022 season when the Wolfpack hosts No. 11 Georgetown on Sunday night. Kickoff at Dail Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
