This was a HUGE, HUGE "story" back in 2006. I mean national news 24/7 coverage for several months as I recall. Similar to the whole Jussie Smollett "hate crime" hoax, at the time many people were suspicious and didn't believe the accusations from the beginning. People at the time compared it to the Tawana Brawley false rape allegations from 1987, a similar situation of a big national media story of a "white on black rape" that turned out be be a lie.
Think about the implications of these types of things. So many times the far Left communist Establishment Lamestream Media hypes up a "bombshell story" of supposed "heinous hate crimes committed by white people against black people" like this that turns out to be a fabrication or hoax (such as the Duke lacrosse "rape", Jussie Smollet "hate crime"), or twists the facts of the case in order to make it seem like an "atrocity" when it was not (eg, George Floyd). They hype it up to the maximum degree and make it 24/7 national news for weeks on end. Seems like they try to do this once every year or so...in order to try to stoke racial hatred among black Americans towards white people.
So why does the Left do this? They do it in order to try to inflame racial divisions in the United States, per the Marxist strategy of "divide and conquer" to keep the population divided and fighting needlessly against each other, distracted from fighting the battles that really matter and not being able to unite together (regardless of racial differences) to focus on the real problems and enemies that our nation faces.
And since they can't find many real cases of white-on-black heinous crimes, they have to LIE and use FABRICATIONS and HOAXES in order to push this idea that white people in the United States are allegedly committing all of these "hate crimes" and "oppressing black people". FBI statistics have shown that cases of white males raping black women are EXTREMELY rare, with virtually zero cases per year.

"I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn't, and that was wrong. And I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me," Mangum said on the web show "Let's Talk with Kat," hosted by Katerena DePasquale.
The interview took place at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where Mangum is serving time for a 2013 second-degree murder conviction for stabbing her boyfriend.
"I made up a story that wasn't true because I wanted validation from people and not from God," Mangum said.
