Figured since we had a bourbon thread we might as well try and cover some of the other vices.

Anyone here enjoy a good smoke? What's your favorite brand of pipe tobacco/cigar?

I have always been a lover a cigars, and it was always convenient to shop at JRs down the road, but with the passing of my wife's great-uncle I have received a few of his old pipes from his collection. Not quitting cigars for good but I must say I do like the pipe better.

Like a lot of AJ Fernandez cigars. Probably favorite of his that I smoke somewhat regularly is New World.
Big fan of Man O' War Ruination
Ave Maria
Alec Bradley Prensado, The Lineage
La Gloria Cubana

I buy the vast majority of my cigars on Cigarbid.com.

I love pipe tobacco, but that's too much work for me.

Nothing better than a bourbon, a good cigar and sitting by the fire pit.

I enjoy the Perdomo Vintage 12yr series. They say it pairs well with bourbon.
I also like Undercrown, Oliva G series, Camacho Yellow, CAO Pilon series, and pretty much anything mild-medium flavored.

Never have been much of a cigar guy , but I enjoy smoking pipe tobacco occasionally. I haven't smoked one of mine in probably 6 months or more...I take spells with them. One of my favorite tobacco blends was Honey Cavendish that I used to buy at The Tinder Box. It's been so long since I've bought any, I'm not sure Tinder Box, or that tobacco, is even still around.

I thought it would be a lot of work too but honesty I'm enjoying it. The biggest drawback with cigars for me is keeping a humidor maintained. I don't buy nor smoke enough cigars to warrant a more expensive humidor so the ones in the size I would need tend to suck/need a lot of effort. Pipe tobacco on the other hand goes in one of the many empty mason jars I have and keeps for a while.

Also being able to dictate how long/much you smoke is pretty nice without keeping up with a half smoked cigar butt.

With all that being said, the cigars definitely aren't going anywhere in my house.

Has anyone tried the Pipes by George shop on Hillsborough? Been by it a million times but never noticed it till the recent pipe hobby.

By work I meant (at least for me) keeping it lit, packing the tobacco, cleaning the pipe.

But boy do I love the smell!

Pipe tobacco is such a chore. I tried to get into it a few years back but I'd much rather have something that relatively stays lit.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is my go-to. I'll normally go to JRs in Selma and get their house blend knockoff of that. The Punch Pita Maduro knockoff of theirs is great too. I just can't justify $200+ for a box of 20 nowadays.

I've never smoked before, or used any substance for that matter, but one of my favorite memories is the smell of my grandpa's pipe. I used to go to my grandparent's house every day after school because both of my parents had to work and I remember when my mom would get off work me and my grandpa would sit on the porch and wait for her to get there. We would talk and he would smoke his pipe (with the navy blue pack of Captain Black) while we waited and the scent of that burning tobacco just had something about it. It was a sweet, yet warm, smell. The smoke wasn't harsh like a cigarette and was more vibrant and natural smelling than dip.

My grandpa was a Carolina fan but I remember how proud he was getting to see me graduate from State. I was the first person in my family to go to college but I think he thought it was extra special for him because he was able to invest his time and wisdom into me to be able to accomplish things he never had the chance to do. He had to drop out of high school and quit Boy Scouts (something he loved as a kid) when his dad (who was also his Scoutmaster) died. I remember how I made him cry when I got my Eagle Scout award and gave him one of my mentor pins.

I lost my grandpa this past year and I miss him dearly. He was the greatest example of a man I've ever known and I would give anything to be a shred of the man that he was. After he passed, when my mom was helping to clean out the house I made sure to get one of his old pipes (my uncle has a habit of selling things at the flea market so I wanted to make sure they didn't all disappear). Right now that pipe is sitting in the console of my car. Maybe one day when I finish law school, get married, or have kids I will get that pipe out, and get some of that same Captain Black, and I'll have the only smoke of my life. I'm sure when I get a whiff of that smell, it'll take me back to sitting on the porch with him again.

Love that story. Amazing the places a certain smell can take us. Not a pleasant smell, imo, but my great grandpa used to dip plug tobacco and spit it into am old folgers coffee tin. If I smell anything like that, I'm instantly 7 years old in their back den watching Nickelodeon while my great grandma made Sunday dinner.

I actually picked up cigars because my dad used to smoke them. We used to sit on his back porch and talk for hours about random stuff. Some of the best connection I've ever had with him.

I'm sorry for your loss. Grandparents are a treasure you don't realize you have until their knowledge is lost to you forever. If you have any others, invest in them and learn about the lives they've lived. I wish I had done that more.
