Genealogists call it the "Brick Wall" phenomenon, and it's unique to African Americans in this country. One you get back to around 1870, you hit the wall.

Before 1870, you know how you have to research your genealogy if you hit that Brick Wall?

You have to find the pertinent tax records, where your ancestors are listed as property.
