Hey guys/gals, I woke up again inexplicably at 4am and can't go back to sleep.

So, got a pot of coffee going while the Mrs. and kids sleep. Wanted to start some threads to get some positive conversations going in the water cooler. Just post your top 5 movies. I'm sure many of you are like me and can hardly post a top 10, let alone a top 5, so try your best. Good, honest, trash talking/debating welcomed.

1. Tombstone

2. Empire Strikes Back (yeah I'm a Star Wars guy, sue me)

3. Big Jake

4. Goodfellas

5. The Dark Knight

Kind of a hodgepodge mixture. Not really in any particular order. Any who, just wanted to get a time waster thread going. Will probably post one for top 5 bands/cars/etc. later on if this one pans out.

Shawshank and Holy Grail would definitely be in my top 10.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Disney movie 'Up'. I'm an absolute sucker for anything Disney/Pixar.

Hey Joco, your 5 are all some of my favorites , too. Love that you have John Wayne in your top 5. I can watch his movies all day long.

I will try a top 5, but will definitely leave something off :

1) Bull Durham
2) Beverly Hills Cop
3) The Godfather
4) Giant ( was on TCM yesterday, a great movie)
5) Tombstone / Open Range ( I love Westerns)

And any Monty Python , as some of you listed , is funny stuff. Ask me again in a week and I would probably change a couple on my list.

Really hard to come up with a top 5. Could maybe get it down to 20. Instead, I'll do five movies that I really like that are not liked by most people and/or critics:

1. A Good Old Fashioned Orgy- Filmed down here in Wilmington and Southport, which adds to my enjoyment. Silly comedy that was universally panned by critics, but I think it's funny.
2. Tin Cup- I'm a Costner fan, and as a golfer, I've always loved this one. Not in Costner's top three sports movies, but one that never gets old.
3. Moulin Rouge- I know, a musical. As a musician, I actually really liked the way all the music from different eras and genres was worked into it, and that was peak Nicole Kidman.
4. Idiocracy- It was so absurd when it came out, but basically predicted the future when it comes to our current entertainment and political landscape.
5. Soul Men- Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac in his last film. Again, as a musician, I loved all the music in this one, and Bernie was hilarious as always.
Just a guy on the sunshine squad.

Me and one of my childhood friends amassed a collection of about 20 John Wayne films on VHS when we were kids. Heck, my sister was named Katie from "The Sons of Katie Elder" movie. Big time respect for The Duke and his movies.

I used to golf everyday for roughly 10 years. One of my new year's resolutions was I was going to golf more with my old man this year. Tin Cup is one of our favorite movies to watch together and it brings back a lot of memories together.

My Top 5 (plus honorable mentions)
1. Joe Dirt - I stand by this wholeheartedly. Amazingly funny movie every time I watch it.
2. Forrest Gump - Every time I have ever seen this movie I have noticed something new that I didn't see before.
3. The Campaign - I had to limit myself to one Will Ferrell movie and this is by far my favorite.
4. Django Unchained - Same limit as above but for Tararntino. Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds were close runners up though.
5. The Wolf of Wall Street - Leo's best movie. @ me.

Honorable Mentions: A Time to Kill, John Wick, 1917, Deadpool, Winter on Fire

Movies are my big passion outside of sports, and there's no way I'd ever be able to narrow my favorites into a top 50 much less a top 5. So I'll just pick out 5 of my favorites that a decent amount of people have seen.

1. His girl Friday. Endlessly witty and quotable dialogue

2. Casablanca. The most "classic" movie ever made.

3. It's a Wonderful Life. Beautiful message and it's James Stewart

4. Singin' in the rain. I don't trust anyone that doesn't like this movie

5. Rosemary's Baby. Greatest horror film of all time (imo)

1. Wedding Crashers
2. The Hangover
3. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
4. The Wolf of Wall Street
5. A Time to Kill

Love all of these and would be similar to my list. I'd throw Dazed and Confused somewhere in there.

@Cornpack has never seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape apparently. Leo will never top his performance in that movie. In fact, I can't believe I left it off my top 5.

Great movie and great performance. However, I don't think it matches his performance in TWoWS. Not a knock on WEGG but solely a testament to the work he put in to get into character for TWoWS.

Agree to disagree then, friend. It's a bit like fighting over Forrest Gump vs Castaway. Great performances in entirely different ways. Speaking of Leo and Tom Hanks...Catch Me If You Can was an underrated great movie.

I much prefer watching non-fiction documentaries, presentations, and similar short films/videos (produced by "small time" independent researchers on YouTube) on serious subjects - such as "verboten" history, conspiracies, religion. Real life is far, far more fascinating than any fictional stories the communists/Satanists in Hollywood can cook up. But if we're talking about meaningless Hollywood pure-entertainment movies...

1. The Matrix
2. Fight Club
3. Terminator II
4. Predator
5. Braveheart

Forgot the predator. Certainly in my top 5. Great call. Only movie I've ever watched that I literally started it over and watched it again as soon as it ended.

Matrix and gladiator are way up there too.

Some great movies listed here already.

I live where The Fugitive was filmed. Majority of it was actually filmed on the mountain I live on. The train wreck they used, and the buses, are still there beside the river. I also walk through the tunnel that goes into the side of the mountain every so often.

It's crazy we had stayed at the Best Western there in Dillsboro a hundred times before I ever realized the train wreck was 500 yards away. That is such a cool thing to see and amazing they just left it there.
