I guess long story short, if we had Dudan and Marohn healthy, we'd really be gloating over this pitching staff and the argument would be Consiglio/Andrews/Hemric.

When you look at it from a numbers perspective - really without those two there are a lot of ways to play it - and you better hit.

Nance has been the best arm - but solidifies the backend, which is why I didn't have him in either of my rotations in the original post.

Andrews is due a great start - hope we get it this weekend - he's been on a roller coaster - but the stuff does play when he limits walks and the groundballs dont turn into weak singles.

State should've swept the last two weekends based on pitching fwiw. I wouldn't change a thing.

Couldn't hit G1 at VT. No clutch hitting in G3.

Defense early in G1 last week.

In 8 ACC starts plus Coastal, Andrews has been good enough to very good in 6 of those and I'm still not convinced Wake didn't have a line to State's pitch comm. Nance is one of the most unique and effective bullpen arms in the country. The value in a series to insert him into leverage spots and hold a lead is unmatched. Ask Miami. Two ends of the spectrum there.

Regional play is different because you are trying to win everything, or lose your single game by a tremendous amount/steal one. I still think Nance's value is higher from the bullpen though. His stuff plays better in those spots.

Not surprised this is your take. Just have to hope a leverage spot emerges each weekend.

We keep worrying about not having leverage moments, but it works both ways. What if you start Nance and State scores 10 runs in the first three innings

Or you start Nance and the bullpen blows the lead.

In my opinion the most effective way to win a game would be Mahron to Nance. Assuming Mahron is healthy.

Thats going to give you a shot against anyone in the country.

He has 17 appearances this year including every conference series, appearing multiple times in 2. Every single time he's entered in a big spot. It's a fallacy argument that we'd go a weekend without Nance able to pitch in a big situation.

Came in at Virginia Tech up six runs, which I don't consider a "big spot". Needed him the next day to try for the series win, which woulda been a big spot.

He pitched in that game.

My point was he probably could have gone the whole way when he came in if he didn't pitch two the night before. And we likely win that Sunday game. No use beating a dead horse; he's extremely valuable in relief and will likely be extremely valuable as a starter if he assumes that role.

On a side note - love all this talk about baseball. Baseball may not be the revenue boom that basketball and football are, but it is the best "major" program at our school - and the sport we are best in position to be competitive yearly from a financial standpoint.

Not only that - baseball is an absolutely beautiful game. Especially when you are able to fall in love with all of the nuances.

Yes!
I think we are leaving money on the table with baseball. NC is a great baseball State and with the passion of the fanbase I have no doubt we could sell many more tickets if the stadium were expanded. Would like to see us continue to invest in the baseball facilities. I really think this is a build it and they will come scenario.

Press box expansion and outfield bleachers are the most obtainable. Similar to the temps seats they have above the grassy area. Would love to see a left field lounge like Mississippi State has. I went to game there when Clark an Palmero were there in 84 and it was off the chart

Absolutely agree. I think this is the best message board on IPS as well. In terms of I feel like we can actually have constructive conversations about the game and its nuances. Every thread isn't just 5 pages of "Fire Avent"

I am grateful to Avent (and Hart and Chrysler) that year in and year out we are competitive nationally and every so often make a special run (2021 still causes a rise in blood pressure).

No matter what happened in football and basketball in a given year, you can pretty much count on State baseball playing meaningful games late in the season.
