NC State head coach Elliott Avent met with the media to discuss the 7-2 mid-week loss to Campbell at home.
What's just your initial takeaway from tonight?
Weren't very good tonight at all, in any aspect of the game. Hitting, pitching, and defense weren't very good.
You obviously changed the lineup a little bit, put different guys out there. What did you kind of, what went into that, and what did you see from those guys?
Peifer and Sherman both played great all preseason, all year. And Sherman's been playing very well. And it was just a chance to give Peifer a chance. He works hard every day. He's a great person, and he works hard. Good player and just a chance to get him back in the lineup. And Wiggins, another guy who's got a lot of potential and has done well with play. Just trying to give him opportunities. But to do all that, we had to put McHugh in left field. And it just didn't seem to work. But anyway, we just didn't play well.
What went wrong with the played approach tonight?
I thought we were not very good at all offensively. Give a lot of credit to Campbell for that. I don't want to take anything away from Campbell. Their pitchers pounded the zone, a lot of off-speed for strikes. And so give Campbell a lot of the credit. But we're going to see good pitching the rest of the year. So we just didn't handle it very well at all.
Do you think some of this was a carryover from the last two games?
I don't think so. I don't think so at all. I don't believe in carryover too much. But carryover usually depends on the starting pitcher. Their pitching pitched better than our pitchers tonight
