Is there any level of success, any statistical benchmarks this team can achieve to where Wiggins ' playing time isn't the primary topic of discussion, or have we decided that's gonna be the thing that gets talked about all year regardless?

Feels like to me after Fraasman was pulled on Friday that RF is a spot they are trying to figure out.

If Sherman can play there that frees up Peifer to play 3rd. He is so good defensively I just don't see Avent not playing him.

He could also just keep rotating and trying to keep everyone happy but that would go against what he has traditionally done.

I like Johnson moving to RF. Let's see how that plays out.
It just feels like there is no room for Novy or Wiggins right now. They are in pinch hit land unless some of these guys struggle once they start seeing real arms.

From Avent and Sherman in the presser:

"So we're in an advantageous situation, but it's keeping their focus, doing like that error in the night, that in some way perturbs me, it's just an unnecessary error in the night. That's a focused thing, and those things just can't happen."

I think he is trying to say "Error in right" but that is the transcript.

On Sherman and Wyatt's versatility...

"Those guys are playing at such a high level. They both have an argument to be in the lineup. And there are only nine positions, and it's hard to get everybody in the lineup. We're just trying to find what everybody can do and play in different spots. Sherman's such a great athlete. And he goes, you watch people when they're not playing in their position.

Sometimes they're out in the outfield. I remember Jonathan Diaz, a great shortstop here. And when he wasn't taking how many balls, he'd go to the outfield and see how many balls he could catch. And I watched Sherman; he just loves being on the field. He loves playing baseball, and that's a big thing. And so I talked to him about whether he could go to the outfield. That gives us a chance to get him and Wyatt both on the field at the same time."

On playing right field today...

"Yeah, well, Friday, Avent called me over. He's like, you didn't play, you didn't play enough before. I was like, I mean, I can do it if you need me to do it. Like, I would go out there. He's like, you feel comfortable? I'm like, yeah, comfortable enough. Like, just go out there. And I was like, all right.

So I just went out there, took some good rounds out there, and he's like, all right, let me start that right today. I was like, all right. So he just gave me confidence, and then he moved me to the center. So it's just giving me confidence out there. That's insane out there. Yeah."

Pretty easy to read between the lines there.

If batting average is the first thing you look at, yeah Wiggins isn't your kind of guy. Regardless, I don't think the reason he's not playing has anything to do with what he's done this year or in the past at the plate. And quite frankly, there's enough guys playing well it's not that hard to keep him out of the lineup, as we've seen them do

This is college baseball. Hitters hit. If this was MLB sure. But advanced metrics in college baseball take longer to stabilize especially walk rates and power numbers.

The staff has had all offseason and 3 regular season weeks to evaluate this team. Yet when Bargo went down and Fraasman went out he still isn't really getting a look…

Rhett Johnson started off slow, but the staff stuck with him. They have moved Sherman Johnson around to find him ABs. If the staff thought Wiggins was one of the top bats on the team they would find a way to get him in the line up.

First, I really like Andrew Wiggins. What a luxury to be able to 10-run teams with Bargo hurt, and guys like Wiggins, Bargo, Fraasman, and Devin Mitchell on your bench. Serrano, DeCarlo, and Bentley too for that matter.

Second, the best pitching anyone on this team has faced all year was in fall practice. They wont face as good a pitching many ACC weekends as they saw in fall practice. But we certainly haven't seen a Marohn, Dudan, Consiglio, Nance, Andrews, Manuel, and son on type arm all season. Our staff said Rett Johnson was the toughest out all fall - so I really don't get the Rett Johnson shade - to hit a ball between Ty Head and Rett Johnson is going to be dang near impossible this year unless you just melt it. On top of that as a freshman he doesn't strike out, brings game changing speed, and should only get better as the season goes on. When you look at the jump Ty Head made from last year to this year and see where Rett is at now, that's pretty exciting.

Last if I had a concerning thought about Wiggins, its the 4k in 12 AB vs. subpar pitching. The 3 HR in 12 AB I of course really like.

What we are going to see from all of our hitters is a reality check on production numbers as the ACC gets started - and I think our staff already has the look behind the curtain at what all these guys look like vs. ACC arms - so I trust them.

This team is really talented - all I heard all fall is how hard it is going to be to write a lineup card - that information has been 100% accurate. I could see scenarios where 3-4 guys get displaced by other guys by Easter - because we haven't played the games that matter the most yet. At the same time I think the staff likely has a good idea in their minds of who is going to shine when the lights are the brightest.

Last, I like most fans hate the lack of rigor in the preseason schedule - at the same time I think it has given us a lot of opportunity to see more folks play.

Wiggins may end up starting and have a great year. I hope he does.

But to say there's an argument to be made he's the top hitter on the team or even top 3 is wild.

Your top hitters are going to play regardless of anything else.

Up to this point we have 7 guys who have been locks in the lineup when available:

- McHugh
- Nixon
- Head
- R. Johnson
- Bargo
- Lanphere
- Ryan

Bargo being out has allowed for Wiggins to get some opportunities, which he has capitalized on. You have two spots remaining for corner outfield and third base for wiggins, peifer, S. Johnson, and Fraasman. Dont think the coaches trust Wiggins in the field, so for him to play consistently, he's going to need to beat out the aforementioned players convincingly and they're going to have to play Bargo in the field.

I think Wyatt P should be a lock at this point with what he's shown offensively and on the field at 3rd playing some very good defense.

If we are supposed to love Wiggins then Peifer needs that love as well and he actually contributes on defense.

He's hitting over .400, also gets on base and isn't really striking out albeit against weak competition (even though we don't get to take that into consideration with Wiggins lol)

Sherman should be a lock as well. Dude is hitting piss missiles just about every AB.

Is there a reason we aren't talking about Wiggins in LF and Sherman in RF? Johnson that good right now?

Johnson is playing over Wiggins. Wiggins is a defensive question, there's better alignments with the same players. I agree with CLT on Peifer. He has to play with his defense (and bat is right behind the others) and the other defensive infield issues. I've wondered if they'll look at Ryan's spot being up for grabs.

Peifers glove is elite, best infielder we've had since Torres.

I don't think Johnson should be playing at all right now. There are too many better options.

That's a wild take for me but to each their own.

Elite speed, great defender, fresh out of HS and 2 punch outs in 31 at bats - toughest out for our elite pitching staff all fall - best high school player in N.C. to stay in state/not leave via draft.

After being injured and coming back and starting 2-14 he's 8-17.

I think when you get a kid like him - especially an in state kid at his dream school - with his kind of upside and fall performance, you give him rope, let him make mistakes and develop a feel for D-1 baseball.

You don't bench a guy you believe in when he has a bad weekend. If that was the case we'd have put Ty on the shelf after PR.

From Avent -

"We've got a lot of players sitting on the bench we need to be playing. Andrew Wiggins, Brandon Novy … Everybody wants to play, but you got to win games, and people earn jobs in the fall and preseason."

Rett our next CF once Ty is drafted this summer? Kid can run, you notice that immediately watching him play out there.

Him and Ryan only two guys who aren't draft eligible this year. He is the direct replacement for Head into CF next year. Staff has always played highly touted freshman, he is also draft eligible next year so makes even more sense why he is playing this year (Besides the fact he's looked good).

Not saying Rhett isn't good or that he won't be key in the future. Just think there are better more experienced options for right now.
