Former Arkansas JUCO commitment Sherman Johnson has verbally committed to NC State.

Johnson, decommitted from Arkansas last week.  This past season for McLennan CC he batted .319 with nine home runs, 51 RBs, and 21 stolen bases.  He’s also considered a dynamic infielder, as he was named Defensive Player of the Tournament on the All-JUCO World Series team.

NC State will have more shortly from Johnson on his decision!

Was committed to Arkansas
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Infield is stacked with elite defensive players.

Assuming he's coming to play. Lots of question marks, but probably a high ceiling here. Speed.

CF-Head
RF-Fraasman
LF-Mitchell
2B-Nixon
SS-Ryan
3B-Johnson
1B-Novy
C-Lanphere
DH-McHugh

You think Wyatt Peifer sits? Gold glover at 3rd that has some solid offensive stats under his belt, don't see him sitting.

IMO he has a BIG advantage at 3rd with Johnson/Ryan fighting it out at SS. The athleticism of both could get them on the field elsewhere it seems, but not sure where tbh.

Where is your new lineup?

Why are you keeping it under embargo, JC?

This kind of feels like Lyons last year. No idea where he plays but potential is there. If Arkansas wants you, you're typically pretty good.

Feels like staff is taking more defensive approach, which I get due to your staff.

Love this pickup.

PG liked this kid back in January, listing him as the 6th ranked JUCO kid. PBR had Sherman ranked 7th overall.

Devin Mitchell, btw, was ranked 40th overall by PBR and Devin was a 3rd team JUCO AA this year.

His defensive numbers surprised me tbh. .910 fielding % and 20 errors. Of course, the tools and upside are there, but based on the early tweets thought he was a defensive wizard.

Still super excited to get him, but could be something to keep in mind this fall when he is (presumably) battling it out with Ryan. For reference, Ryan has has a .932 fielding % in 29 games this summer.

Tools and consistency aren't the same

Also, is he getting dinged for errors because he's making plays on balls other guys can't reach? Fielding % is a pretty useless stat tbh for evaluating defense

Errors is also up to the judgment of a scorekeeper.

Right.

And even in the MLB, with player and batted ball tracking, tons of advanced stats, etc. it's still pretty controversial which defensive metrics actually properly capture defensive value. So, fielding % and total errors definitely doesn't.

Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in the OF if the bat supports it. We don't usually have SS who can't glove it at a high level. The one I can think of in recent years didn't stay there for very long and he could swing it. I would be surprised if that changes this year.

So we will see def lots of options on the left side. Should be an interesting battle over there.

Yea. Hard to say. Good to have some options.
