Surprised by this one. Guessing someone was able to get in his ear while playing up in Cape Cod.

Welp, that makes this feel doomed, I'm ngl. The literal only thing that could be the reason, as far as I can tell, would be that someone else is willing to pay him significantly more money. If that's the case, then I don't know how we're ever supposed to retain our best players consistently.

Edit: Well I seemed to have been missing a lot of context here. Maybe not quite as doomed as I initially thought. Thought Sosa had a much better year than he did. Still not a good loss imo.

No doubt. ACC gonna have to figure some stuff out. Cant compete financially with the SEC

Esp not in a secondary sports like baseball. You empty the coffers for football and basketball. There's just nothing left to keep guys like this.

This might be for the best. His highs were good but he had crazy cold streaks and struck out a ton. He's below our typical standards defensively as a catcher.

Sosa isn't irreplaceable. He's an average defender and an average bat that strikes out too much. He has potential due to the potential power but if someone is willing to pay SEC then so be it. There are 100 guys out there who can give you what you got from Sosa this year.

I know people are up in arms about this, but I might pay him to DH but not to catch.

Let's try and upgrade this position, specifically defensively.

Ding ding ding.

Pitching staff probably just got better too.

Agreed. Have you heard of any names that have taken visits or who the staff is targeting?

Obviously not just at catcher, but maybe in general. Been pretty quiet

Because it's not. By the time you factor in his framing and defense he was probably a below average catcher. People just see the potential power but he probably cost you just as many defensive runs.

Me either. Average hitter, below average catcher, terrible base runner

There's where I am at with the whole transfer portal in general. There are very few guys who I think would actually hurt if you lost.

It's kind of like at work when you quit a job and you think there is no way this place will survive without you. But then the company just hires someone else and they keep chugging along.

I agree that he is easily replaceable from a production standpoint. His multiple multi game slumps over his 2 years should have gotten him benched. But the coaches had so much belief in him. It's a big middle finger to Avent and Hart.

Meh. Only negative thing is we can't use the "love Sosa" gifs anymore. Good luck elsewhere.

Not the end of the world but I was optimistic Sosa's bat would go to another level next year. Oh and let's not start trashing Sosa just because he is leaving. We all loved him a couple of hours ago.

It's like when Tommy White left and people freaked out about his production. Two years later we end up with Amak and Pennington who probably don't end up here if White stays.

Id rather have a defensive catcher than one that can hit 15 HR's.

I agree. But I don't think anyone is really trashing him.

If some team wants to DH him with the massive hole in his swing, more power to them. But it wouldnt be mine

I would imagine we wouldve seen more high profile guys leaving if this was because of Avent retiring.

To me this is one of the negatives about focusing out of state with recruiting. These guys just don't have the same ties to State that in state guys do. Much easier for a Fl guy to pickup and leave for thr SEC.

We'd heard over the weekend a big-time name was going into the portal. Sosa was the one who I felt for State would be the best possible name. I think he'll end up in a great spot though for sure.

Let's not pretend like losing Tommy White, a guy who averaged .356/.420/.705, 25HR, and an OPS of 1.125 over 3 years in his college career wasn't a colossal loss haha.

Oh he will for sure. LHH catchers with power are in demand.

You made the college world series two years later after losing him, I'll take that trade.

Every single starting catcher in the college world series this year, except for Murray St., has an above average DRS.

Any player on the Cape could very well end up in the portal.
