IPS IN 5: Handling The Hype A Concern?

February 19, 2025

IPS in Five is a daily 5-10 minute audio feature where we will talk all things NC State, in a timely manner.   We’re going to give initial feedback on games or upcoming matchups.  We’re going to talk recruiting with Steve Williams.  We’re going to have guests.

Expect an in-depth discussion in a short amount of time, which is what I believe a lot of our subscribers are going to enjoy.

NC State's Elliott Avent didn't hold back when discussing his team's disappointing loss to Liberty, specifically how a few players must be able to perform better while dealing with high expectations off of last year's success.

It is often said that losses like this can happen in baseball, but this should not have happened. And, worse, fans like me was and is counting the baseball team to help clear the dark cloud that has been 2024-25 so far for the principal sports, with the exeception of women's basketball, which seems like it is becoming primetime. Fortunately, we also are continuing to have success in XC, swim/dive, tennis, wrestling, etc. - and they certainly reflect well on the University - but baseball holds a special place for me (a close second only to football), so I hope the coaches and team can once again overcome (or better yet, avoid) head-scratching mid-week disappoinments....

Just for the sake of discussion - NC State's sophomore class

Luke Nixon - .412avg. 5 RBI. 8 Runs
Chris McHugh - .500/9/7 + 1 HR
Matt Ossenfort - .375/2/3 + 1 HR
Ryan Jaros - .400/2/3
Sosa - .250 (needs to be better here and strikeouts) 2 HR & 5 RBI
Lanphere is 2 for 8 on the season
Bechtel is 1 for 1 with a huge home run.
Jet is 0 for 1

Marohn allowed 3 hits and no earned in 5ip with 7ks. 0 walks
Andrews allowed 1 hit and 1 earned in 5ip with 5ks. 3 walks
Consiglio is at 3 hits and no earned in 3.2 ip with 7ks. 4 walks.

^^ This is phenomenal

We are really only talking about Dudan & Sosa slipping and Wimbish I guess, but he didn't pitch last year. Those two will figure it out.

I said this back when we were taking these guys in the portal but I think this staff went into this offseason looking to match up the young pitching we had with some young hitting and really open up another 2-3 year window to make Omaha a couple more times before Avent retires. Because the approach to hitters in the transfer portal was completely different than last year when you brought in one year guys in AMak and Pennington.

I'm not sure immediately competing for a national championship this year was the ultimate goal with this offseason because you didn't land those proven guys. Now it can definitely still happen but this team is very young so I don't expect that. I think the potential for the next two years is huge though if these guys really develop.

D1 has Dudan at 50, Marohn at 55, and Sosa at 58 on their 2026 MLB prospects list.

Yup, if we can keep this sophomore class together and healthy I think Avent will give it one more go around next year with a team that could really make some noise (on paper). That is, if he is even thinking about retiring which was rumored this past season. Heck, he could go for the next 5-7 years

Bingo. Dudan has started slow because he's not throwing strikes. Absolutely nothing to worry about here. Sosa took time to get going last year as well but has looked better than I expected defensively if I'm being honest. The power is there and he will get it together. Really like this team and the talent they have arm wise and with the hitters they brought in. Excited to see them step up in competition this weekend
