Way too early for any national seed talk. We gotta figure out what we have. Dudan may not be suited for the 9th right now, how long is his leash?

A ton of leash, but he's going to be fine. And this game will have zero impact on a national seed.

Luxury with this year's depth is we do not need willy.

Is it wrong? Pitching is our *assumed* strong suite. We have options if willy isn't 100% (don't expect him to be, tommy John is no joke)
It's just an interesting take.

Matt Willadsen is a proven piece that's pitched in a million huge games. You want him out there.
I figured he'd be eased back in and on a strict pitch limit anyways and stretched out more as year goes on. Honestly you want him later in the year anyways and with guys coming of TJ you never know what you might get that first year.

-UNCG beat Wake

-Kennesaw State and #5 UGA currently tied going into the 9th

-St. Mary's College up 5-1 on #21 Santa Barbara in the 8th

- Texas State and #21 OK State tied in the 7th

-UTRGV smokes #20 DBU 15-5

- Southern Miss (good club) blanks #18 Miss St. 3-0

Win your series'. Pretty simple
Agreed here but it isn't that State last the game. We expect to lose a number of games b/c it's baseball.

It's how State lost this game that is most frustrating to folks. We lost with our fastball (no pun intended).

And I don't expect State to lose that way very often.

State has allowed 12 earned in 4 games. 2 from Dudan, 6 from Willadsen, 3 from Wimbish. I'm going to bank on those guys figuring it out, especially the first two. Essentially 2 bad innings away from a team ERA in the low 2's

Matt was at 253 innings pitched in the 3 years prior to his injury around a 4 ERA and hitters batting below .250 against him. Mostly against the best teams in the country. I think I want that guy in the mix lol.

Hell, if he was healthy last year State 100% was hosting a super.

You 100% want that guy back. I think people should probably temper their expectations on him early in the year while he is still getting in game shape and figuring things out.

Regrading Decriscio, McHugh HAS to be better at picking balls. He has "missed" probably 2-3 so far this year that would be difficult picks, but picks that good 1st basemen make. The throws havent been perfect, but he has to help too

Yep 1B is such an underrated position defensively. I am guessing McHugh hasn't played a ton of 1B based on his profile. If I recall he was a left side guy. Just needs practice reps.

Biggest takeaway so far for me has been defensively. Not nearly good enough right now. Particularly need to see more from Decriscio and McHugh.

The 9th was sloppy by Dudan for sure, but he got out of it at least 3 times. Twice with a double play grounder and once with a bad call behind home plate. Could've overcome the calls with better defense.

But you move on. This one won't matter at all. Think Liberty will be an RPI help for us. Good ball club.
I'm not sure about what I'm seeing from DeCriscio so far...is he just that SoCal smooth or has he been a lil lackadaisical at times? There's been a couple balls to him that I thought he should've charged harder in the first couple games. Because he's waited back, he's made the plays harder than they should've been (IMO). That DP ball was tough with the runner "hiding" the ball a bit but it's still a play that he's made a million times, even if he's just getting the out at first.

People losing their minds b/c of a loss in game 4 of 50-60 games is wild but mad fans gonna mad fan.

Definitely some things to improve upon but there's a lot of youth playing right now that will get better. And like jtilley said, tough to play ball when it's so cold.

Have a text from a good buddy, who might see this post, that says "DiCriscio sits back on the ball forever at SS - gives me anxiety". That was from the weekend games.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt early. He was a great defender at his last stop and is coming off a hamstring in the preseason. Plus he's hitting .700. It's mostly nitpicking because of how spoiled we were with Butterworth last season
8 errors last year in 49 games, 9 the year before in 44 games, two errors from from April on last year. If he was out with a hamstring that makes a lot of sense, I'd imagine he settles in as things go on.

There is more to measuring a SS than errors. Do you make plays? They are going to some errors but do they take away hits.

Like I said I am not worried about Dudan with the weather and it is still early but looking at his last five games pitched dating to last year it hasn't been great. I have said before I think guys started to figure him out some towards the end of last year and started sitting fastball on him and laying off the slider. If he isn't locating the slider he has struggled, and while the fastball has elite velocity, it is considered "Flat" with little movement.

Stat line from last five games (JMU last year): 5.1 IP, 7 ER, 8 BB's, 9 hits (2 HR), 8K's, 2 HBP. The most concerning thing IMO is in those 5.1 innings he threw 157 pitches.

Holy cow that is a ton of pitches in 5 innings. I think he needs to be able to feature a 3rd pitch. That many pitches says command but it also says an inability to put a hitter away. Dudan is a talented guy he will be fine but you do have to improve yourself and I think a change up or split would be good to have in his arsenal given his fb is a bit flat.

You don't need a third pitch as a RP, he just needs to locate better. The slider is a "Plus Plus" type pitch and plays extremely well off his fastball, he just needs to throw strikes earlier in counts.

I love how 'professional' Matt is as a college pitcher. He has 1 elite pitch but otherwise his stuff is very ordinary. There are going to be times that he gets hit. It is inevitable when you are featuring an 88mph fb. You leave that over the plate and it is a problem. I think offense has picked up a good bit too since Matt started his career at state. Pitching has probably never been harder at least not in a longtime. We will see. I mean there are a number of guys vying for starter roles - Consiglio Marohn Fritton Andrews and who know who else might emerge to go with Willadsen. Nothing is guaranteed at this point for anyone in terms of the rotation. Only 3 of those guys will be starting on the weekend so …

Correct and probably the first time he has played 1B would be my guess. A lot different than playing on the left side growing up. People think 1B is just some slug that can't play anywhere else. Furthest from the truth. Can clean up a lot of mistakes or turn outs into baserunners.

Yea I don't have access to those stats so no idea there. I can tell from his line from last year that he had 6 of 8 errors in the first 20 games of the season though and got a lot better as the year went on at making the routine play.

Say what? Maybe you could say that about a lefty but certainly having a 3rd pitch is a gamechanger for a righty. The diddeeenece between a bullpen guy and a starter usually is whether you have a 3rd pitch. With Dudan in the pen he can survive on 2 pitches for 1 time through the order but you are right that command of those 2 pitches has to be good.

Probably 90% of the RP in the majors only throw two pitches. Yes as a starter you typically need a third pitch but as a guy going 1-2 innings max effort you do not. He really isn't meant to be used going through a lineup multiple times anyways.

You're not wrong, at all, but I don't like to assume dudes will ever be the same after an injury. We saw Sam highfill fall off a bit after his, and it's possibly Willy does the same. If he can return to even 90% though, he's a weapon.

Win your series'. Pretty simple

Let's not start with the excuse making. We gave a game away - not good - but certainly not a huge deal either. We don't need to justify it with other team losses.
Welcome!
Only took him 4 games into the season to start his BS. Awesome...

I wish y'all would stop. Put each other on ignore or something. It's every thread.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Bringing up other teams losses is not justifying State losing to Liberty. It's pointing out that regardless of who you are playing you stand a chance of losing to less talented teams. Did anyone actually see Evansville winning the Greenville regional last year. Evansville?

My point was we don't need to justify losses. Take the L, learn from it and move on. It s a loser mentality to try and justify losses by saying other teams lost too. That is irrelevant.

Again, I don't see anyone trying to justify a loss. I see people bring up the fact good teams lose to bad teams every day. It's called Baseball. Errors and walks killed us yesterday. Walks by some of our best pitchers.

Stop trying to use logic with the mad fan types.

We had a horrible error by one of the most experienced players on the team in DeCriscio. Sht happens. If he doesn't learn from it and get better then he'll get the Payton Green treatment.

Every GD game isn't and shouldn't be a referendum on the team, especially in game 4 for pete's sake. You wanna talk about same sht in every thread...that's the same sht. lol

Who made it a referendum? It isn't a referendum. As such we don't need to make excuses for it. Take the L and move on.

None of us coach or have anything to do with the outcomes of the games. So not sure how there could be a "loser's mentality".

It's analysis and expectations.
