No real surprise as Elliott Avent has chosen to start Sam Highfill in the Raleigh Regional opener against Bryant, and his experience could be big in getting the Pack off to a nice start this weekend.

4th starter (Marohn) is one of our best high leverage middle relievers and has never given great length in a start which is critical in a game 1 of a regional.

I mean is it tired? The last time we hosted a regional we lost to the 4 seed. Three 4 seeds won their opener last year over 1 seeds and none of those 1's advanced to a super.

You literally do have to win the first one. Playing from the losers bracket eliminates any advantage you may have as the host team. Totally different scenario from last week where you had a game that didn't matter.

It's a case by case basis. I happen to have a different opinion. I apologize that I don't share you guys opinion. If we can't beat Bryant without our ace then we aren't going far anyway

Do we get the good Highfill, or the Duke Highfill?

Duke was a hot team clearly, but Highfill has left a lot to be desired this year.

Same people saying we should start our number 9 pitcher would be the same people outraged if Avent started say Jaxon Lucas and we lost this first game let alone lost the regional.

I'll take the 7 innings and 8ks on 3ER that Highfill gave us vs Duke in Raleigh.

State went 12-2 in games Sam started. I can't understand the narrative out there that this fan base has on him. It's insane to me.

I heard the similar things after losses to UNCG, Coastal, Campbell: "If we can't beat these guys without our best pitchers than we may not make the tournament"

Yet here State is hosting a regional as the #10 overall seed in the country.

Hell, he threw four innings of no hit ball against them in the tournament. Not to mention Avent has said multiple times he's been fighting through something all year. But we love to eat our own.

I hope we get Duke Highfill. He was incredibly sharp and I believe had a no-hitter through 4. Get that guy against the Bryant lineup and we have 7-8 innings and 7-10 strikeouts and 0-1 earned runs by Sam IMo.

100% a situation's by situation deal and there are multiple ways to handle.

Our coaches have us as the #10 national seed.

Whether I agree with every single decision, they know their team best.

If we're talking just starting pitchers then I think yes.

Fritton at his best probably has better stuff but Sam has been more consistent this year.

Ok, let's understand this a little bit. In your opinion is Sam our 1, 2, or 3? I would argue it is:
1A - Dom
1B - Highfill
3 - Whitaker or Consiglio
4 - Consiglio or Whitaker

Are we in agreement with the above?
If so, why are we starting our 1B guy against Bryant? To me, this game screams Whitaker and saving Highfill for somebody not named Bryant.

If somebody wants to tell me the staff has more trust in Consiglio to get outs against USC than Highfill I can potentially get there. If somebody is going to tell me we are trusting Whitaker over Highfill on Saturday or Sunday I cannot get behind that at all.

If we can't beat Bryant with a veteran starter like Logan Whitaker this team is going to have a really hard time advancing in this tournament anyway. Save your biggest guns for Saturday and Sunday that is the advantage of drawing the 4 seed.

Exactly which is why he shouldn't be pitching against Bryant.

There's no guarantee we play South Carolina twice. Heck no guarantee we play them once. The goal should be start 2-0 in the regional. Yes you can still lose after starting 2-0 but it's much more unlikely. Best way to start 2-0 is to throw your 2 best guys in the first 2 games which it seems we all agree are Sam and Dom. It's not that confusing. Yes theoretically any of our starters should be good enough against Bryant but why risk it? We lost midweek games people thought we shouldn't lose and didn't use Sam or Dom. You lose game 1, especially to the 4 seed and your chances of making it out of this regional are slim.

There's also the chance that the staff thinks more of Logan Whitaker than some of our fans do. The other teams also have to use their pitchers too, and it doesn't seem like there are any real aces in this regional.
