NCAA TOURNAMENT: Raleigh Regional Unveiled

May 27, 2024

No. 10 seed NC State will host South Carolina, James Madison, and Bryant in the 2024 NCAA Baseball Championship Tournament.

The Wolfpack’s regional will be paired against the Athens Regional which features No. 7 Georgia, UNC Wilmington, Georgia Tech, and Army.

The Gamecocks (36-23, 13-17 SEC) head to Raleigh after hosting the Wolfpack in the 2023 Columbia Regional. South Carolina finished 2024 in fifth place in the Southeastern Conference’s East division behind Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Vanderbilt. Despite picking up three wins in Hoover, Ala., the Cocks fell out of conference title contention after a pair of losses to eventual runner-up LSU.

The Dukes (34-23, 17-13 Sun Belt) finished the regular season fourth in the Sun Belt standings. However, JMU would get eliminated by Georgia Southern in the conference tournament in the semifinal round. This marks the first time since 2020 that the Dukes will play in Raleigh.

The Bulldogs (36-19, 17-7, American East) venture to Doak Field as champions of the American East conference. After concluding the regular season three games ahead of second-place UMBC, Bryant bested UMass Lowell in the conference tournament opener before a pair of wins against the Retrievers, the second of which by a margin of 15-10, to clinch the American East’s automatic bid.

The 2024 NCAA Tournament begins on Friday, May 31. First pitch between the Gamecocks and the Dukes is slated for 2 p.m. with the Wolfpack’s game versus the Bulldogs scheduled for 7 p.m.

Makes a lot of sense and is pretty much what I expected. Mentioned on the podcast coming out today that this was the route we took last time we hosted with Reid.

Go throw a lot of innings and dominate Bryant. Sets you up really well the rest of the weekend

Well that's not exactly the best comparison haha.

Reid didn't pitch bad but we still lost the first game to Army and then lost the regional

Yeah but who pitches doesn't affect how well the team hits. Don't score 1 run against Army/Bryant.
The other team's pitcher does affect how well your team hits. Remember that most hitters make outs at least 7 out of 10 at bats. Even your best guys will make outs at a similar rate. If you pitch well and play good defense, then you can shut teams down. It's not a given you are going to score a bunch of runs even if the competition may not be ACC caliber. Pitching and defense is the great equalizer.
NC State pitchers don't affect NC State hitters. I'm very well aware that opposing pitchers effect your offense lol.

Hence the one run scored against Army. That shows what can happen.

Wow. Using our Friday night starter against Bryant. Strange.

How many other 1 seeds are throwing their 1 against the 4 seed? That is the advantage you get. Not having to throw your 1 or 2 in the opening game. Really surprised here.

Timing of the announcement seems earlier than normal. I thought we normally don't release this info until gameday. Wonder if us throwing Highfill could impact who USC puts on the mound against JMU.

Go listen to Avent's press conference and you will understand. Any of these teams can beat you, so you have to win the first game.

UNC is doing the same vs Long Island. I'm sure if we had a dominant ace like a Chase Burns we wouldn't be throwing him. What would be worse is throwing a bullpen game and then losing to the 4 seed.

Fritton is just as good of an option Saturday night vs SC as Highfill would be. Starting the regional 2-0 makes it very hard to lose. Best way to start 2-0 is throwing your two best pitchers the first 2 games. There's not a huge gap between Highfill and Fritton besides knowing Highfill is your best bet to eat up the most innings and save the bullpen for the rest of the series.

Yup, this isn't ACC tournament pool play where you can punt the first game.
Just a guy on the sunshine squad.

StateFan2001 will probably respond to this because he isn't smart enough to understand how ignore works.

I can't believe all of these games are on ESPN+. I know ESPN wants the money but they've continuously botched the opportunity to make college baseball bigger than it is nationally.

Problem is there's 64 games in basically 4 time slots over the next 48 hours. There's some stagger with east coast/west coast but very east coast dominant.

I now have the Disney Bundle since I went to YoutubeTV but last year I just paid the $10 and watched all the games. I think I actually went back in the next day and cancelled my subscription so I didn't forget. I was well worth it.

I think they do a really nice job of the wrap around coverage also. I don't remember what the call it, squeeze play maybe? With Mike Rooney

Oh I've got ESPN+ (mostly to watch the new PGA Tour Live stuff and the NHL) so I'm good but I think if they put it on regular Watch ESPN/ ESPN3, viewership would be higher.

The NCAA Baseball Tournament is a blast and I think ESPN does a really poor job displaying the chaos that ensues during the regional round.
