REPORT: Star Freshman Cannon Peebles Enters The Transfer Portal

June 18, 2023
13,430

According to a report, NC State star freshman catcher Cannon Peebles has entered the transfer portal after a breakout season.

Peebles led the Wolfpack with a .352 batting average, .697 slugging percentage and a .456 on-base percentage.  He tied for first on the roster with 50 RBI and ranked second on the team with 12 home runs in just 142 at-bats.

Peebles primarily served as a designated hitter with the Wolfpack already having one of the top catchers in baseball, Jacob Cozart.  Cozart has another year of eligibility remaining.

I hear you brother. I am to the point of letting it all go by the wayside. If you have to ask me right now, I think there is a good chance of this being it for me. Usually by now I am clamoring for football to start, but that is not the case now and I do not see that changing. College athletics has become professional sports with no loyalty at all.

I'm sure NIL has a part in this, but him transferring is something that would have happened pre NIL. He didn't have a spot in the field for the second year in a row.

I don't know how many more times we can use "he doesn't have a spot in the field". LSU could very well end up winning the World Series with finding Tommy White a spot in the field.

Lol they're in the CWS because of their SEC Pitcher of the year, SEC Player of the Year and their bullpen who all throw 95+ not because of Tommy White's abysmal .848 fielding percentage.

I didn't say it's because of him but they found a way to put him on the field to keep him happy. I think we would take his bad fielding to get 22 homeruns and 94 RBI's. NC State doesn't have the ability at this point to say we can't get one of our best hitters a position to play if he's threatening to leave. It's college baseball you better score runs to win.

I think it's the opposite actually. LSU has the ability to accept a terrible defensive player because the rest of the roster is so loaded it makes up for it. NC State's roster isn't built like that. There is a position where you don't have to just accept a defensive liability that's called DH and that's where he was used here and played every game and set the NCAA record for home runs by a freshmen. People act like Avent had him on the bench. He played every game he was healthy.

You know we scored more than 1.5 more runs per game this year and actually made the NCAA Tournament without Tommy White right?

Where you gonna play Peebles? Over the top 50 MLB draft prospect who also can hit really well that plays the position Peebles wants to play?

Doesn't seem like that makes the team better at all.

My family has had season tickets behind home plate for years, so I consider us relatively dedicated fans. Met Carlos' parents, met some of the really great players.

This departure hurts because I see other teams using it to somehow demonstrate an inability on our coaches' part to figure how to retain our best hitting talent. I don't pretend to understand the complexities involved in balancing hitting versus defense and how and when to play people (although I fully understood why Tommy had no business playing 3rd base), but I am just hoping that this loss 2 years in a row does not reflect a deficiency in our NIL, coaching, facilities, team chemistry, etc., but is just a player making a business decision to go where he has a better chance of playing as much as he thinks he should.

Nothing weird about it. You can't be having to start over every year. Missed the tourney last year. Lucky to make it this year. . Don't think you can expect next year to be any better. l

Your post makes no sense. We actually improved over last year from losing our best player. White was better than Peebles and we have a better incoming class than we did last year.

How were we lucky to make it this year? We had a top 25 RPI. Nothing lucky about that.

I don't even know why we're making the connection between Peebles and White. According to perfect game, Peebles was the #345 ranked player in the country. Nobody was talking talking about him being an impact guy. The staff found him and used him as an important piece on the lineup to literally start over from last year and get better. Kid had a great year and is looking for more opportunity. And we're using that as a negative against Avent in some way? You don't get credit for finding and developing the guy, only blame for not keeping him Just weird man.

NIL has created a clear pecking order and NC State is obviously way down the list of programs. Yes, we can pull players up from the likes of Charlotte, UNCW and Davidson, but we have become a feeder program for the big boys!

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but in the 3 major sports since the true inception of NIL, I can really only remember Tommy leaving because of an NIL opportunity. Our notable transfers would be Manny Bates, Devin Leary, and now Peebles (who is not on the same level of impact as the first two fwiw). Those were fairly understandable and likely to have happened prior to NIL. I certainly don't think we've fed bigger programs.

Now we definitely could use better investment in baseball. I've been vocal about that here and would love to see it happen. It's a sport where a little can go a long way.

If we spend more money on baseball facilities nothing bad would ever happen. We would win the ACC then go directly to Omaha every year and our excess baseball dollars could fund or lost rifle team. 1,2,3....Reach for your wallets everyone.

You can try things for a year. Stick him in the outfield. Teams do it all the time. He has an off-season to learn it. Let Cozart have days off every once in a. While and DH him. The. peebles would be ready for full time duty in 2025. It's not hard to use imagination in baseball. Guys who can hit get in the field all the time. Ozuna for the Braves can barely throw these days and he sees the field.

Peebles caught this year. Wasn't enough and wasn't going to be enough next year.

Off days? You want to give one of your best players an off day? This isn't a 162 game season. haha
Stick him in the outfield? This ain't little league. You didn't watch much Pack9 this year did you? You see Will Marcy play Left and Right Field at times? He got "stuck" in the outfield. Woof. All the bellyaching about defense this year and we say, "stick him in the outfield". ha

Sounded like they might were going to try Peebles at 3rd as well. Ya'll are forgetting the most obvious in all of this though....THE KID DOESN'T WANT TO DO IT. Full Stop. He wants to be an everyday guy behind the plate and unfortunately/fortunately the guy ahead of him is better. Sucks. It is what it is though. The portal allows him to go somewhere where he's squatting everyday and sounds like that's what he wants.

Can not blame Peebles. You can get to the majors quicker as a catcher that can hit. He needs to work on his defense and handling pitchers, that does not happen playing 3rd or playing in the outfield.

ETA: Remember in baseball everyone is draft elgible after their 3rd year in college. That means if he stayed here he would be developing his skills behind the plate the same year he would be elgible to be drafted.

I don't blame him for looking for more playing time, but he knew who was on the team when he signed. The path to a lot of innings behind the plate was always going to be difficult. At best, he was looking at a platoon situation for two years, so it's kinda frustrating that he chooses to leave, but it is what it is.

The emotional instability of fans is what it is. When things don't go their way they have big feelings, not too dissimilar to toddlers but these are adults most of the time. I just laugh, poke a lil fun and focus on the "what's next".

I was also upset when I first saw the Baseball America dude's tweet, it stinks. Cannon is a damn good ball player but so is Jacob Cozart. You know something we've rarely had issues with at NC State? Finding dudes that can hit a baseball really well. If Cannon was a pitcher it would hurt even worse b/c that's where we generally have a hole in recruiting (mainly) due to our putrid facilities. Hitting a baseball? Gimme a couple tees, a batting cage or two with some machines and you're in bidness. We got all that.

I'm really hoping Alex Sosa makes it to school b/c he's a real talent and can hit the baseball. Good news is last year very few of the highly ranked HS catchers signed or were even drafted (mainly not drafted). Bad news is each year is different. We'll find out in about 3 weeks when it's draft time. I'm not optimistic but more and more HS kids are hitting college these days.

In the meantime I really hope we bring in a JUCO stud or two b/c there's some out there for sure. Just like in football, the portal has impacted JUCO baseball recruiting, IMO. There's some really good dudes out there. Juan Correa, John Marant (Ga Tech bounce back), Kevin Karstetter and there are others. Go get a couple. There are less than 50 JUCO kids that are drafted each year now that there's only 20 rounds.

I agree, we need to hit the JUCO guys up. We've had some great history with those guys, and I think sometimes they're just a little more hungry than other transfers or recruits. And spot on about hitting. It's one thing I never worry about with us. We are going to find some dudes that can hit and make the dudes we've got better hitters, no doubt.
