Dienes got a start already. Went 5 innings, struck out 9 walked 3 with 2 ERs. He's always had swing and miss stuff, if he can throw strikes he could be a contributor next year

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Great to hear on Cozy and Fritton to USA and Peebles to Cape. Can only help them hopefully springboard to a huge season next year. Hope we got enough $$$ for Cozy and Peebles

Jacob Dienes went 6 scoreless tonight, only giving up 2 hits. Struck out 5 but walked 5.

I refuse to get excited, because the walk numbers are up there still, but he is showing some good stuff early this summer.

For the summer- 11 innings, 2 ER, 14 Ks to 8 walks.

This is where I remind you about your summer crush last year in Trey Cooper. Kid had some sick summer league numbers yet still walked a lot of dudes and wasn't really playing much competition anyways in the Appy League. Goes to Liberty and doesn't do much, walking more dudes than he struck out on the season.

I'll offer the same caution as I did last year with Cooper. If you can't throw strikes the rest doesn't really matter (you know that, of course).

I'd love to see Dienes come in next year and kill it by throwing a lot of strikes as an arm out of the pen from the left side. We can use the same skepticism with Dienes as you are with Halford.

I'm more bullish on Halford b/c we've seen him do it in a game against legit competition (unc and scar) recently.

You know I'm just messing with you but still...we all should probably temper our expectations with Halford and Dienes. How great would it be to have those two throwing strikes out of the bullpen next year.

Which is why I said I refuse to get excited, i learned my lesson.. And considering CC doesn't help kids improve, he's probably a lot cause tbh. His next outing he'll probably go 2 innings and walk 6 and regress to the mean.

But for real, he definitely has to earn innings, but his numbers are encouraging. Far more than coopers were last year. We just need all the LHP help we can get so I am going to try to stay optimistic. Also, for Cooper, the coaches asked him to come back after seeing him last summer, so they saw something too.

You lost me at "CC doesn't help kids improve" but no sense in going down that rabbit hole of untruth. haha

I have to remember that people actually think Scott Foxhall wasn't any good either.

I'm not in love with Chrysler but when you give "insert pitching coach here" our sht facilities and expect all this exponential growth from every arm on the staff it's just not based in reality.

You're choosing to believe Cooper regarding the coaches but that's ok. His numbers at Liberty showed where he's at and that's real (ASUN ain't exactly the ACC).

I figured you could dish it some, so had to throw it back. But I don't think Chrysler is too popular anymore, but that's not relevant for this convo.

Yes, I would believe a player when he says that unprovoked, no real reason to make that up. If we are talking numbers, why are people so high on Halford? B/c he has had 2 solid outing in 2 years? Cooper has done that too . As I said in a previous thread, I truly think Halford has the potential to be a better version of Baker Nelson. Can give 2-3 good innings at a time would really help this team. He has the stuff to do it. But like Dienes, they both have to put it together. I think we are all pulling for them to do so. Between Halford, Scott, and Dienes, if we can get 2 of those 3 to give us productive innings, it'll be a massive help. They have the stuff to be better than Nelson and Labriola.

He's so terrible and no one ever improves under his watchful eye yet our rag tag pitching staff full of walking wounded somehow managed to have a top 30 ERA in the country this year. Go figure. He can lose all the popularity contests he wants if he keeps trotting a top 30 ERA staff out each season.

"unprovoked", right. He definitely wouldn't want to save face but like I said, we saw the reality and that was against ASUN competition. But yes, let's continue to white knight for Trey. haha

You'll have to ask why people are so high on Halford. I don't know. I just know his last two outings were pretty good against two good baseball teams (that play in the ACC and the SEC). One of which wasn't in garbage time against the gamecocks, that's why I have a sliver of hope. He literally did what Cooper couldn't do (still isn't doing) and Dienes hasn't done yet either.

also, in the CPL, Matt Heavner and Drew Lanphere are both struggling with the bat some. Heavner is 2 for 17 to start the year while Lanphere is 1 for 6 with 3 walks and 3 Ks. Heavner has only struck out 2x in his 17 ABs, so seems like some bad luck for him.

Heavner is playing SS while Lanphere (who redshirted) is playing catcher (has also DH'd a game). Lanphere was listed as a C/IF on the gopack roster.

We don't have to keep talking about Cooper, I have a soft spot for lefties that have strikeout stuff. This time last year we really needed that, so I was hopeful. it didn't work out. However, he had multiple nice outings this year against ECU, UVA and Virginia Tech. All that said, he isn't on our team, and it seems like he is who he is at Liberty. I will keep the optimism up for Dienes in hopes that he can harness his stuff and get guys out. He, like Cooper, have flashed that ability in summer league. He has to be better than Cooper, 100%. Hopefully he pulls a Justin Lawson and it clicks for him.

I'm really hopeful for Win Scott to improve and be a contributor for us. He seems like a 10/10 teammate and the kind of player who deserves success.

I wonder what the season would've held for him if he didn't get hurt after throwing his first pitch in game 1.

I agree, I think he would have taken innings from Labriola. Seems to have a decent 3 pitch mix, can he gain a couple ticks of velo and be 93-94? That could really make him a weapon, IMO.

I don't think he needs to be 93-94 the more I think about it, not sure it's possible. He just needs to be around 91-92, plus he's a big boy already. Not sure he's getting any more juice out of that arm, IMO. Can he be a Will Gilbert? Will jumped on the scene his 3rd year, IIRC, and was really good for us his last 2 years. Year 3 is coming up for Win. I do wish he could've stayed healthy as well.
