I totally agree with Soles back that I think it should push Nolan to the bench.

Don't agree with bumping Wittaker after one bad start.

Not sure you can put your 2nd hottest bat on the team in a platoon situation. Doesn't seem logical.

Will Marcy is hitting 14-31 .452 over the last 8 games since coming in against uncw. You don't put that on the bench or platoon it, not right now.

Unfortunately our dudes that are hitting the ball can't really play anywhere else other than DH or try to hide them at a corner OF spot if you got Peebles in as a DH.

I'd be pretty uncomfortable with taking Nolan's defense out of the lineup as well.

Not sure you can risk playing Soles in the field just yet after missing a whole month with a hammy. Maybe the risk is the same running the bases, I dunno. If any of the OF could slide to third and move Groover to second you could get your best hitting lineup on the field. Marcy was a SS in HS I think like half the guys on the team, but putting him at third at this point would probably be out of the question . Could put Trevor in CF, Soles in LF, Marcy in RF and DH Peebles I guess. I think you probably leave things pretty much the way they are, maybe shuffle the lineup a bit, and do more situational pibch hitting when needed, maybe play some small ball with the bottom of the lineup (the horror!). I know the weekend sucked, but I didn't think we were far off on Saturday and today. Clemson wore us out with seeing eye grounders today, hard to do much about that. This was also one of the worst weekends for our starters of the year and we were still right there in two games, which to me is a small positive.

Standing at 8-12 in conference now. At some point though we have to actually win.

We have to go 7-2 in our remaining ACC games to finish above .500 and not **** the bed OOC to not have a repeat of last year. This weekend was a disaster, no other way around it.

Oh dear, I didn't even pay attention to the pitching "suggestions".

Dude wants to throw Watkins out there? He can't throw strikes and if he could wouldn't we have seen him? jeez

Watkins is worse and Britton has shown he can throw strikes both previously at Oregon and this season as well.

Watkins has 5 appearances this season and thrown 37 balls and 40 strikes. His last two outings, 16 balls, 10 strikes as well 3 walks, no strikeouts and 5 runs given up.

Never mind that we don't get to see how he looks during bullpen sessions. If he's pumping in strikes during throwing sessions then I'd wager we'd have seen the dude throw more.

But yeah, you definitely got it figured out, for sure Coach. LOL

The NC State baseball team continues its eight-game homestand Tuesday with a midweek matchup against No. 12 East Carolina at The Doak. First pitch against the Pirates is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.

A free audio stream will be available on the Varsity Network App with Andrew Sanders on the call. The game will also be available on WKNC 88.1

NC State (25-14, 8-12 ACC) holds a 70-42 advantage in the all-time series against East Carolina (29-11, 7-5 AAC). Tickets for Tuesday's game against ECU are sold out but can be purchased from other fans through our official fan-to-fan ticket marketplace, StubHub.

PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS
Tuesday RHP Sam Highfill (NCSU) vs. LHP Zach Root (East Carolina)

THE MATCHUP: SERIES AGAINST EAST CAROLINA
NC State enters this week's matchup against the Pirates with a 70-42 advantage in the all-time series, dropping April 4's matchup 13-9 in Greenville. The Wolfpack won both matchups in 2022. More notes from the series against ECU are listed below:

NC State outscored East Carolina 14-3 between a pair of victories in 2022. The Pack shut out the Pirates 2-0 in Greenville on March 29 before blowing out ECU 12-3 at The Doak on April 26.

J.T. Jarrett knocked in both runs for the Wolfpack in NC State's 2-0 win over East Carolina on March 29, 2022. Garrett Payne, Canaan Silver, Baker Nelson and Chris Villaman combined for the three-hit shutout in Greenville.
The Wolfpack completed the two-game sweep of ECU on April 26 this past season, scoring six straight runs twice in the 12-3 victory. The Pack fell behind 1-0 before scoring six straight to take a 6-1 lead. NC State then scored the final six runs of the game.
The Wolfpack has won four of its past six games against ECU, limiting the Pirates to just four runs in the Pack's four victories during that six-game stretch.
The Pirates slugged six home runs in April 4's 13-9 win over NC State. Carter Trice and Parker Nolan combined to go 7-for-9 with four RBI in the setback.

SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
East Carolina (29-11, 7-5 AAC) also enters Tuesday's game with a 1-3 record from this past week, defeating Charlotte at Truist Field 6-3 before getting swept by Wichita State over the weekend. The Pirates' pitching staff ranks 16th nationally in ERA (3.85), 14th in walks allowed per nine innings (3.24) and seventh in WHIP (1.24). Offensively, Justin Wilcoxen paces the Pirates with a .336 batting average, while Jacob Starling leads ECU with 32 walks and a .438 on-base percentage.

Seeing that name reminds me that I was one of the folks who thought Garrett Payne would have a terrific career at NC State.

Payne's absence hurts this year. He was a steady contributor and was good in mid week and long relief roles that this team has been lacking at times this year. Hopefully he'll be rehabbed in time for next season.

It would be HUGE for this team if Highfill looks more comfortable as a starter. Of course, the Avent haters will come out in force saying he should've been starting all season but that's a small price to pay to have Sam looking like himself again. Interested to see what kind of pitch count he's on.

Green is at 2B. He is the team-leader in RBIs and tied for the team lead in HRs and SBs.

He also leads the team in errors (7) but, without going back and checking, I am pretty sure all of those were committed at SS, not 2B.

I believe he's aware Green is our current 2B and is referring to the fact that he's had a hard time finding home plate, must less the ball over the last few weeks. Stats are great. How many HR's and RBI's does he have in the month of April?

I've been an advocate of PG's and will never turn on a player just on principle, but he's been really bad.

You can take it past April. In conference play he's hit exactly .200 with 10RBI, 1 HR, and only 3XBH.
1 homerun and 11 RBI since March 7th. Last on the team in strikeouts and OBP with only Nolan and Trice close. Almost all of his production came in 2.5 weeks. He's 3 for his last 38 at the plate.

What's more concerning is that he is still tied for the team lead in HR's and leading the team in RBI. There's too much talent on this team for that to be the case.

And I don't have an answer. It's honestly mind boggling to be in this scenario with the guys that are on this roster and their talent level. Groover, Candelaria, Soles (injured I know), Cozart, Serrano, and maybe Peebles start for most teams in the ACC and would hit high in the order. Marcy has been really good. Nixon, really good. It's really strange offensively right now.

Long post and I apologize. I'm not sure what the move is there right now. You need PG's talent to compete at the level you want to be, but the output is just not there. Off topic, but I think it's time for Candelaria to move to center and free up a corner spot for one of Soles/Marcy/Nixon to get another bat into the lineup. I know Nolan can play a pretty darn good center, but at what cost for the offense right now. Also think TC has a pretty good glove out there.

Nolan had a bad weekend at the plate, but he had raised his average 40 points in the last month as of three FSU series. Unfortunately we had a lot of guys at the bottom of three lineup with goose eggs this weekend, which is one of the reasons we left so many guys on base. He'd do himself a favor by taking a pitch or two every now and then, and by not trying to pull everything. Also, he's fast, I'd like to see him bunt more.

Green is in his own head. He's guessing up there. He's talking fastballs in fastball counts when he should be feasting. It's like he can't even pull the trigger sometimes. I also think he's been unlucky, and if he could get a couple lucky ones it would probably get him going again, which I'm guessing the coaches probably think too.

Baseball is weird, in the span of a few weeks you can go from white hot to the worst slump, from hero to chump. It's kinda what makes it so fun, but when you get two or three guys having stretches like that it can really drag you down.

Other than softball, for obvious reasons, there really is no sport like baseball. The ideas we apply to other sports seldom fit in baseball. It is its own thing.

April 14 vs Florida State 1-4. 2 runs, 3 rbi
April 16 vs Florida State 0-3
April 16 vs Florida State 0-4
April 18 vs Davidson in Charlotte 0-3, run

Green is feeling pressure from himself and also the fans. He knows that a lot of them are down on him. He just has to strip it down to its simplest terms, which is do what you're capable of. I saw him at Green Hope. He is elite when he is on. Once he stops worrying about pleasing people, he will start doing things that does please them.
