Was talking with my LSU buddy the other day and he was asking how I thought we'd be and told him "I think we will hit but no idea about pitching."

Whitaker seems to basically be the Friday night ace after being forced in the role last year and staff rewarding him for it.
Once Sam feels ready, I'm sure he'll move back into his FRI spot.

Whitaker piggybacking off of Willedsen or Sam makes more sense. I just don't trust him going through an ACC lineup more than once.

He went through multiple pretty darn good ACC lineups more than once last year. He wasn't super sharp tonight, but the defense didn't help him at all. And isn't helping Carson right now either.

Yeah, he was really good last year IMO but I also really like what I've seen from Fritton as well. I do like having a lefty in the weekend rotation but either guy as a long dude works for me.

He did have some nice outings, he also had games like VT, Miami and UNC. This why I said I don't trust him enough.

You're going to be in a lot of trouble when your Friday night starter is giving up five runs or not going more than 3 or 4 innings every other start.

I'm interested in seeing Fritton vs better comp but I also like the lefty in the rotation.

Do you trust Sam Highfill? He got beat up a couple times in 2021.

I'm not comparing Whitaker and Sam but more so just saying dudes can have bad days. Especially when you don't have the physical stuff to overpower and cover up mistakes.

Whitaker didn't pitch for what, 3 years? and I want to say he had some nasty arm stuff to come back from as well. As the kids say these days, give the man his flowers, he was pretty good last year all things considered. He and Silver stepped up big time for us, IMO.

Runner on first and second there with no outs and Trice swings away.

Baker not really who I'd want to throw in this situation. Kinda wish we had used Whitaker's early struggles to give some young guys a shot-- no harm no foul if they got rocked

Just for the record, I like Whitaker fine and I don't mean to come off bashing him. I just don't view him as a Friday night ace type and that's OK because I'm not sure if anyone else on the team is either. It's a good story to even come back from all the injuries he's had, much less throwing the amount of innings he did last year.

I honestly haven't seen enough of Sam yet, I think I've seen him throw twice and they were short outings.

I don't think you came off as bashing him, personally. I do think a key piece of this that we haven't mentioned is the order of starters in general. You could argue that we've thrown our best guy on Saturday pretty consistently the past two seasons. Matt is going to eat innings and you're likely to be able to use your full bullpen Friday/Sunday because of that.

Yea last year when Sam went down it was probably just easier leaving Matt pitching on Saturdays since that was already his scheduled day. Maybe the staff just liked keeping it like that this year, but you make a good point about the bullpen usage on Friday and Sundays.
