NC State baseball (29-13) completed its fifth series sweep of the season and earned its 12th-straight win at home with an 11-4 victory over Radford (13-30) on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
In a stellar offensive performance,
Josh Hood went 2-for-5 blasting two home runs with five runs batted in on the day. It was Hood's fourth time leaving the yard in as many games and he is now the third Pack player with double-digit home runs this year.
The Wolfpack got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. Following a
LuJames Groover III walk, Hood cranked his 10th home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field, to take an early 2-0 lead.
In the third Groover extended the Pack's lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
Jacob Godman after he led the inning off with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
The Pack tacked on another run in the fourth with runners at the corners when
Noah Soles managed to get in a rundown to score
Will Marcy.
In the fifth the Pack offense plated four more runs to extend the lead to 8-0. With his second RBI of the day, Groover scored Godman on a fielder's choice to third after he drew his second walk of the day, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Following
Devonte Brown's walk to put two on for Hood, he belted his second home run of the game over the left field wall for his 11th of the year and fourth of the week.
Hood matched his career high for runs batted in in the contest, as he drove in five earlier in the week in NC State's 12-3 win over East Carolina.
The Highlanders managed to get on the board in the sixth on a Julian Rojas 2-RBI single to left center with runners in scoring position, cutting their deficit to 8-2.
NC State added two more runs in the seventh, extending its lead to 10-2. Soles drove in the first run of the frame with a RBI groundout to second after
Dominic Pilolli drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a bunt single and groundout.
Payton Green then laced a double to left-center field to score Jarrett and bring the other run across.
Radford cut back into the Pack's lead in the eighth with a pair of bases-loaded walks, but the Pack responded in the bottom half of the frame with the final run of the game when Brown scored on a wild pitch after he and Groover started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Starting pitcher
Canaan Silver tossed 5.1 innings to improve his record to a perfect 6-0 on the season, yielding one run on six hits. Silver was relieved by
Justin Lawson in the sixth inning who allowed one run and two hits over 0.2 innings of work.
Garrett Payne then threw a scoreless seventh for the Pack, followed by
Logan Adams coming in for the eighth inning to see his first action of the weekend.
Chris Villaman was brought in to finish off the contest, striking out two of the five batters he faced over 1.1 innings.
NC State will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series against North Carolina at Doak Field at Dail Park. The teams will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Friday and Sunday's games will be on ACCNX while Saturday's contest will be on ESPNU. There will also be an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App for all three game
