NC State baseball (10-6) held off a late rally from Elon (9-7) on Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park, earning a 2-1 victory in the first of its two midweek contests this week.
The Wolfpack scored both of its runs in the second inning and held the Phoenix to just two hits through seven innings. Elon pushed a late run across in the ninth and managed to put the game-winning run on base, but NC State was able to hold on and get the victory.
Devonte Brown put the Pack on the board in the second, scoring on
Dominic Pilolli's sac fly to left field after reaching on a leadoff bunt single and advancing to third on
Will Marcy's bunt single to third.
Payton Green then doubled NC State's lead to 2-0 in the inning when he drove Marcy in from second with his single up the right field line.
Wolfpack starting pitcher
Logan Whitaker had a phenomenal outing on the mound, fanning five batters in 4.2 hitless innings in his second career start.
Baker Nelson (1-0) entered in relief and proceeded to retire three of his four outs by strikeout.
Elon looked to tie the game up in the seventh, putting runners on base via an infield single and walk, but
Canaan Silver secured three outs, including a pair of strikeouts, to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the eighth the Pack attempted to break it open as it loaded the bases up on a pair of walks from
LuJames Groover III and Brown and an outfield single from
Josh Hood on two outs, but a swinging strikeout ended the threat.
The Phoenix rallied in the ninth, plating its lone run of the contest and putting the game-winning run on base. Alex Iadisernia led off with a single to left center and after a fielder's choice and error put him at third, he scored on a wild pitch. Parker Haskin then tallied an infield single to put runners at the corners, but a swinging strikeout by
Chris Villaman, who picked up his first save of the year, followed by a double play started by
Payton Green stranded them.
NC State returns home Wednesday to host Coastal Carolina First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network and there will be an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
