No. 17 NC State baseball (9-4) got back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon thanks to its 13-5 victory over UNCG (6-6) at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
The Wolfpack tallied 17 hits en route to snapping its four-game loss streak, as five different players turned in multi-hit performances.
Josh Hood put the Pack on the board in the first inning when he drove in
LuJames Groover III with an RBI single up the middle, but the Spartans responded in the bottom frame when Kennedy Jones belted a three-run home run to left field to take a 3-1 lead.
NC State tied things up in the second when
Jacob Cozart and Groover scored on a wild pitch and error, respectively, but once again UNCG answered in the bottom half when Rowan Watt led off with a double and scored on an error, and then Jones's RBI single up the right field line drove in Pres Cavenaugh after he reached on a double.
In the third NC State once again managed to knot the score back up at 5-5 when
Will Marcy drove in
Dominic Pilolli from second with an RBI single through the left side, and then a bases-loaded RBI fielder's choice with Green at the plate scored the tying run.
The Pack plated four more runs in the fifth on four hits and an error to take a 9-5 lead. The inning was highlighted by Cozart's 2-RBI single and
Tommy White's run-scoring hit to the right side of the diamond. It was Cozart's second hit of the contest and for White it was his third.
White tallied his fourth hit of the game in the seventh with his two-run double down the left field line, scoring
Devonte Brown and Groover after they reached on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively. Pilolli then delivered in the next at bat with a double to right center to score White, extending the lead to 12-5.
In his first career at bat for the Red and White,
Brady Lavoie belted a solo shot over the left field wall to add a late run in the ninth.
White (4-for-6, 3RBI), Cozart (3-for-5, 2 RBI),
J.T. Jarrett (3-for-5) and Marcy (3-for-5) led the offense, as it was the ninth time this year the team has tallied double-digit hits in a game. Additionally, Brown extended his reached base streak to 14, dating back to the 2021 season.
Canaan Silver (2-0) was phenomenal in relief on the mound, going five innings and giving up one earned run while matching his career high in strikeouts with four.
Garrett Payne,
Logan Whitaker and
Chris Villaman combined for the final four innings of the contest, yielding just two hits while not allowing a run to score.
The Pack will open ACC play this weekend when it welcomes No. 3 Notre Dame to Doak Field at Dail Park for a three-game series. The teams will play at 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Friday's game will be broadcast on the ACC Network while the other two will be on ACCNX. All three games will have an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
