Led by a combined six runs batted in on two home runs by
Tommy White in the fourth and fifth innings, No. 7 NC State Baseball (6-0) continued its win streak on Friday night with a 10-4 victory over Quinnipiac (1-3) in its series opener at Doak Field at Dail Park.
This is the fourth game this year the Wolfpack has tallied double-digit runs and the sixth consecutive time it has put up double-digit hits, as it combined for 11 in the contest. In each of its last five games, NC State has held its opponents to four or less runs.
The Pack got on the board first thanks to bases-loaded hit-by-pitches with JT Jarrett and
Will Marcy at the plate to quickly go up 2-0 in the first inning.
The Bobcats evened the score in the fourth when McGuire Tuffy laced an RBI single to right field with runners at first and second, and then Kyle Maves scored from third when Tuffy found himself in a pickle between first and second, crossing home plate before the final out of the inning.
In the bottom frame
Payton Green drove in Marcy from third with a single to right field to put the Pack in front, 3-2, and then with the bases loaded White stepped up and belted a grand slam to center field for his sixth home run of the year to extend the team's lead to five.
Quinnipiac cut into its deficit in the fifth when Sam LaChance scored from third on an RBI groundout, making it 7-3, but NC State answered back with three runs when Green scored on a wild pitch after leading off the side with a double and White crushed his seventh home run of the year following a
Devonte Brown walk.
With runners at the corners after a pair of one-out singles to start the sixth, Maves scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-4.
Canaan Silver and
Chris Villaman combined to toss the final three innings of the game, not allowing a run to score, while
Garrett Payne (1-0) picked up first career win on the mound as he tossed two innings in relief and surrendered one earned run while fanning three batters.
White (2-for-5),
LuJames Groover III (2-for-4) and Green (2-for-4) led the team's offense while five others in the lineup tallied a hit. White's team-high six RBIs matched his career high which was set on Feb. 18 vs. Evansville.
NC State will continue its series Saturday with Quinnipiac, as the teams will play at 2 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. The contest will be broadcast on ACCNX with an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
