NC State baseball defeated Duke, 14-5 (12 inn.) in its lone scrimmage of the fall on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Sixteen different position players, including 11 newcomers, saw time on the field, while ten different pitchers made an appearance.
Duke plated a pair of runs in the third inning on a wild pitch and solo homer to right field, then added to its lead in the fourth on an RBI single with runners at the corners.
A six-run fifth inning put the Pack out front, as Jacob Cozart,
Noah Soles, LuJames Groover III and Josh Hood each tallied RBI extra-base hits to contribute to the surge.
Payton Green extended NC State's lead to 8-3 in the sixth with a two-RBI triple to right field.
In the eighth the Pack plated four more runs on two hits and an error, making it 12-3. Pinch hitter Chase Nixon hit a solo shot to right field, then Brady Lavoie's RBI single to left and a Duke error allowed two more to score. Will Marcy's groundout to second drove in the final run of the frame.
Three innings later, NC State tacked on two more runs on a two-base error followed by Hood's third RBI of the night via a single to left field. The Blue Devils cut into their deficit in the bottom frame on a 2-RBI double to right field.
