NC State baseball's season ends in College World Series

June 26, 2021
24,161

NC State baseball’s season is over. After the Wolfpack played yesterday’s 3-1 loss to Vanderbilt yesterday with just 13 players due to health and safety protocols and COVID issues within the program, the NCAA announced that Saturday’s winner-take-all game would be ruled no-contest due to COVID protocols, and Vanderbilt would advance to the College World Series.

The following is the full release and statement from the NCAA’s Division I Baseball Committee:

“The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee has declared the Vanderbilt-NC State Men’s College World Series game scheduled for Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m. Central time a no-contest because of COVID-19 protocols. This decision was made based on the recommendation of the Championship Medical Team and the Douglas County Health Department. As a result, Vanderbilt will advance to the CWS Finals. The NCAA and the committee regret that NC State’s student-athletes and coaching staff will not be able to continue in the championship in which they earned the right to participate.  Because of privacy issues, we cannot provide further details.”

NC State finishes the 2021 College World Series with a 2-1 record, one win away from the final series, after beating Stanford and Vanderbilt before falling to the Commodores with a depleted roster yesterday.

Any word on whether Vandy is getting tested now as well? Seems like they should if it's all about contact tracing.

They should either test all participants or suspend the tournament until all teams can resume play.

For the "they should've been vaccinated" crowd.

- At this point in time, we simply don't know who was or wasn't vaccinated. It is wrong to assume that any of them aren't vaccinated and assign blame. There exists a very real scientifically possible scenario that Jarrett is vaccinated, but still became sick. In that scenario, he would be required to get tested based on the NCAA guidelines for exhibiting covid like symptoms, vaccinated or not. Once he got tested, and apparently tested positive, then the entire team would be subject to testing, vaccinated or not. Being vaccinated does not exempt you from being tested if you have been in close contact with someone who is sick, which we know because they still tested the players that played yesterday. So all it takes is for someone on the team or staff to have covid like symptoms and test positive, whether a true positive or not, and that triggers everyone on the team being tested. So there is not a one hundred percent guarantee that this doesn't still happen even if everyone was vaccinated.

- It's important to remember a few things about why they may or may not have gotten the vaccine. Firstly, many of them had covid at the start of the year. We can debate the science of how long antibodies last until we are blue in the face, but there are still scientific merits to not getting the vaccine when you've recently had covid. Also, the vaccine wouldn't have been available to them until after the season started. I can see that affecting some players desire to get it. I am vaccinated, I think the vaccines are safe, but there are some unknowns, and I understand why top level athletes may be hesitant (even James guy LeBron).

- There is no denying that the NCAA's stance on player health and safety is dubious at best. They did not institute a bubble for this tournament. They allowed full capacity, and fans are not distanced or masked. Players are signing autographs and posing for pictures with kids. Sneaking out this decision at 2 AM reeks, and I don't blame the players for being mad with the NCAA.

They were advised not to get vaccinated because they already had covid (advised by medical professionals). No way you went to Vandy.

this is anti-science

a lot of you guys know that i have (and still am) working on the Moderna vaccine studies

it is completely expected and common place that vaccinated people test CVD positive.

the vaccine does not eradicate a virus, it boosts an immune system to target a specific virus preventing further infection.

for this reason on the clinical trials, vaccinated subjects are not blindly tested for CVD. A subject must first express symptoms of CVD before they are brought back into the clinic and tested.

Exactly. The decision to test fully vaccinated people is not based on the science of the vaccines. It is so wrong.

People are mad at the NCAA. I get that. We gotta have someone or something to blame. But I'm guessing if everyone had been vaccinated, all players and coaches, this never happens. Self inflicted pain if you ask me. Get the damn vaccine people and you, too, can test positive and still get the baseball team sent home!

If you had immunity from prior infection, you should not need to be vaccinated. How many of State's unvaccinated players had prior infection? Also, being vaccinated does not prevent you from testing positive. For this reason, we should not be testing vaccinated players.

So, by these new NCAA protocols, all athletes for all sports this Fall should be regularly tested, no matter if they are vaccinated. You want to see a revolt - wait until you tell my son and his teammates (all will be vaccinated by the Fall) they still have to go through weekly testing. He was tested over 60 times just last season alone and has no desire to go through this for another season.

Just because you had COVID-19, or think that you did, is not a good reason not to get vaccinated. NCS's stupidity cost them. No matter, Vanderbilt would have crushed the rednecks and white trash from State school NCS. The only decent school in NC is Duke.
Do you happen to know where the guy who beat Vandy the other night is from? The guy who crushed the HR.

It ain't about the virus at this point. If it were, they'd test all players repeatedly regardless of vaccination status.

And they would not be letting 22,000 fans in and around the ball park. It's politics, which is the most disguting thing about this.

North Carolina as a State is a debacle run by right-wing Republicans. What do you expect from a State where the stupid Republican governor signed a bill to cut off Federal unemployment benefits? NCS got their comeuppance. Lol. NCS is a state school that is academically and athletically inferior to Vanderbilt University. NCS cheated bringing in Russian ringers and the rednecks and White trash still lost to Vandy. I love it. Go Vandy Boys onto yet another CWS championship!

3. By your logic vandy should be tested for being in contact with us

That is a completely separate issue, and should never be brought up in the context of this conversation. Personal liberty matters. Medical privacy matters. For years, it's been said (by abortionists anyway) "hands off my body". Suddenly, it's not just your body anymore, it belongs to the public.

The irony here is that the lesson to all this to an objective observer would be why the hell should I waste my time taking the risk (albeit very small) of getting vaccinated if my life is still going to be derailed either way.

Again, I am vaxxed but if I wasn't I'd be looking at this and saying what's the point?
wilmwolf

Four vaccinated players testing positive should've been followed by a retest, particularly if all the unvaccinated players tested negative. It is very possible to get covid of you are vaccinated, but four vaccinated guys getting covid is statistically far fetched at best. This doesn't pass the smell test.
