I don't get it.
For him to end up somewhere like that there is more to his game we don't see. Struck out 47 times in 212 AB's vs D2 pitching, might be something or might not be. These types of kids play summer ball with D1 kids so I am sure they are scouted and seen but you don't get passed on by basically everyone but NIU for a reason IMO.
I mean his K% was 19% over 242 PAs. That's considered average, IIRC.

In 2023 duke had the kid from D3 Trinity who was like 6'6 240 and had struck out 61 times (in 255 PAs) against D3 comp. Metz hits just under .300 with 17 bombs for duke, he does end up striking out 72 times tho. haha

I know all players aren't created equal but I'd love to know what it was about this kid that made teams pass.
Oh I agree, something is throwing teams off though. I'm not worried about the K rate either but if you see him and think it jumps to 30% or so maybe you worry? Who knows but it is odd for him to end up there.

You're gonna see that everywhere now. You'll see top level high school guys potentially being forced down to D2 level. Mid major schools are gonna be able compete with the big boys because theres going to be really good talent forced down the ranks.

Probably an instance where he didn't have the right "measurables" coming out of HS and as I dig into this dude more he was a Covid kid as well. He's gonna be 24 years old at the start of the next season so he's a grown ass man.

Looks like he went from Mallard Creek (not a great baseball program at all) to Ashland University, then to Gaston College for two years and then to HPU.

Kid was a two time All State teamer his SO and JR years and then Covid wiped out his SR year. Doesn't look like he had a big arm from the mound and of course he played short for MC but he didn't even end up at HPU out of HS.

Seriously, if you aren't running a 6.6-6.7 60 most places aren't even looking at you unless you just absolutely rake or hit bombs.

No different with pitchers. Why you are so many guys end up drafted from small places after making a jump in velo.

Most bigger schools aren't interested in developing guys who don't already have the tools.

Not at all. Juco could mean a kid throwing 88 with control issues that no one wants to take a chance on. Or kid from rural part of the state that has good HS stats vs bad comp.
