I don't understand what went on there with Smith this year. Started the year hurt apparently, then made an appearance with lessened velocity, then got in a couple of additional times throughout the rest the year where his appearances were spaced apart by like 3 weeks at a time.

Surprised we didn't hear Avent or Chrysler get asked more about his status during the season.
Yeah agree. Not sure why Rob, as much as he was around the program, never asked the question. It was a pretty big deal to not have your All-American closer for the entire year.

I did ask, more than once. Whenever I asked I was told he had injury issues.

Thanks Rob. Hopefully he can get healthy and ball out. Wish it was in Raleigh

Absolute stud. I'd assume he's a draft guy though.

Baseball is a sport you can retool each year - there are so many good players and late bloomers in JUCO and mid-majors

Finding power hitters is tough if you do not have money - we felt that this year

I'd like us to go after grown men that can hit bombs and field the ball - give me a 22 year old D2 All American with 20 HR over a SEC transfer with 19 at bats any day.

Everyone is looking for this description but give me guys with juice, proven production, and k to walk ratios that are promising

And give me pitchers that k over a batter an inning and don't walk dudes

The older than better - 24/25/26 years old - who cares - they are pros now

Lol. Good guess!

The real point I really wanted to make is that when you look around at programs with a little less robust NIL budget than the SEC - you see a lot of old vets from lower levels with production

UNC with Madera, Bass, and Angelo all lower level guys and then Kepley from Liberty

Dom Listi from Indiana State at Clemson

Old dudes

Baseball already was re tooling every year anyways pre transfer portal. Half your freshman class was either drafted or cut in the fall and majority of your juniors were drafted when the draft was 50 rounds. You also had a ton of transfers or Jucos pre NIL as well.

Really the hard cap just means guys are getting "Cut" in the spring this year vs the fall.

Sprock is talented. Two way guy. Homered against us last time we played.

The relationship between staffs is very strong. Not sure if that's a positive or negative here. Avent tends to avoid taking from his friends.

Someone mentioned Danny Lachenmayer from NDSU - in terms of production he's exactly the kind of guy I'd look for. I had mentioned him to my fellas before Hart ever gave him a follow.

Other than not being 25 years old of course lol

But the stuff seems to play. And I gotta think practicing in Raleigh is more appealing than Fargo.

Good grief. Going to be starting over here. I suspect we will be a year behind the curve on the new baseball lamdsxape with rev share and NIL and scholarship numbers. Next year might be rough.
I have been thinking about this some and this isn't just me trying to knock you or anyone else with the NIL/Scholarship deal but I really don't think there are that many teams doing it.

Baseball is now basically a two power confrence sport with the SEC/ACC and roughly 20-30 other solid teams each year. Out of those teams how many are actually giving guys significant NIL? LSU, Tenn, Texas, A&M can only have so many guys and as we have seen this year, it didn't help all the SEC teams.

Maybe that is Avents argument with saying he doesn't need much NIL. Of course if you have a Tommy White who has a massive season you will probably lose him, but you also don't need to blow your entire budget on him.

I think you saw this year there is a ceiling with the type of lineup you are going to be able to out together without appropriate financial resources. You are going to continue to lack in power and probably will struggle to get and keep high end arms.
We need to be able to compete for a guy in our own backyard like the kid from HPU that is going to the SEC. We need to be able to get a guy like Cam Bagwell from UNCW. As we move forward will we be able to compete for power bats and high end arms or relegated to the diamond in the rough? We will see soon enough.

I'd personally be trying to find a way to turn whatever projected facilities funds into NIL funds. Not all, but certainly some.

That would help win more IMO.
