I don't understand what went on there with Smith this year. Started the year hurt apparently, then made an appearance with lessened velocity, then got in a couple of additional times throughout the rest the year where his appearances were spaced apart by like 3 weeks at a time.
Surprised we didn't hear Avent or Chrysler get asked more about his status during the season.

Yeah agree. Not sure why Rob, as much as he was around the program, never asked the question. It was a pretty big deal to not have your All-American closer for the entire year.wroncsu said:

Hard to understand why Woodson would leave with the late season momentum he created plus a gaping hole at 3B. Makes you wonder.
Looks like a great time to start from scratch. Painful to watch.

No money for baseball and women's basketball, may start to see these good programs slide. This is where the SEC/Big Ten dollars really separate conferences.
As long as we keep this core, plus Nance I think we can manuever around the transfer/JUCO/D2 market and put together a really solid team.StateFan2001 said:

Agree. But you have to have the right people in place. Wade works very smart and very hard. The player acquisition process has been flipped on its head for baseball now. Are we a program that is setup to handle that? Not sure. They need to watch closely what is happening with basketball. That is the model. The job is now very very different. Have to lobby internally and with donors for rev share and NiL and scholarships. Have to get deep into analytics for finding the right guys within your budget out in the market.

Money matters. It's not just playing time or fit. It's a combination.
By money you also mean a full scholarship. So many of these guys are sitting on a 25% scholarship. They will find a full ride out there now.
Woodson entering the portal is super frustrating, I felt once Heavner and Jaros entered he would likely stay. Ugh.
I don't know how you fill a roster moving forward with 34 legit ACC players without 34 ships. Those guys you are offering 25% to will likely find more than that somewhere else if they are worth having on your roster. Not to mention these scholarship changes have really helped to level the playing field for expensive private schools like Duke and Wake. It opens their recruiting up much more. My focus if I was in charge:
1. Get to 34 ships
2. Max rev share/ NIL
Baseball you can really differentiate yourself with full scholarship offers. I would reserve thr reg share and NIl for keeping high end guys on my own roster and filling gaps from the portal.

Guys, I know it's hard but have some perspective regarding Woodson. He had a great weekend beating up some mediocre pitching but when he saw real arms, he went 0-5 with 3 Ks. He was/is going to have a learning curve next year if he stays at this level.
If this would've happened a week ago, no one cares.
I hate to see anyone leave my school but it happens.

1 weekend of playing probably doesn't make up for a frustrating season of watching the 3rd or 4th best option at 3B start 95% of the games in the season. My guess is a lot of the guys leaving had their minds made up by the middle of the season. Before and NIL negotiations would come into play.

The guys that transferred were not going to play, point blank period, unless they took massive steps forward.
Pitching is going to more than fine with Marohn, Nance, Dudan, Consiglio, & Peissel who have all had success paired with a good bank of talented arms behind them + portal options.
That's a lot more than 7 or 8 guys! Plus, an attractive portal destination if EA leans into NIL with a little rev support & scholarships.

Scholarships, Revenue Sharing, and NIL. NIL cash is slowly but surely creeping higher for baseball. It's no where near football and hoops, but the more 25-50K payments you can offer in baseball, the better the roster.

Come on guys. Did we really think the staff was just gonna pencil Woodson in at 3rd because of one game.
That wasn't going to happen. They were likely going to try and get someone out of the portal to play 3rd anyways.

I say the same thing with football … you are allowed to upgrade when guys leave . The portal door swings both ways .
