NC State Volleyball (17-7, 8-6) moved back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, defeating ACC foe Syracuse (2-22, 0-14) in straight sets in Reynolds Coliseum.

The Wolfpack saw three players hit double-digit kills, including a game-high 13 from Ava Brizard while Courtney Bryant and Amanda Rice each contributed ten. The Pack's offensive effort was aided by 18 assists from Kristen McDaniel on top of 14 more from Naomi Cabello.

After trading points early in the first set, the Wolfpack forced Syracuse into both of its timeouts during a 9-0 run that saw NC State move from down 9-8 to ahead 17-9. The spurt from the Pack included a pair of aces from McDaniel while Brizard accounted for three kills. NC State took the first set 25-15, marking the third-straight match the Pack has won the opening set dating back to NC State's win over North Carolina on Oct. 29.

The second set was evenly-played between the Pack and Syracuse, with the Wolfpack using a 5-0 run to create some separation and push its lead to 15-9. The Orange were able to bring the score within one point after a 5-2 rally trimmed the Pack's lead to 20-19, but NC State would score five of the final six points of the match to move ahead 2-0 and take a 25-20 set-two win.

The Pack controlled the third and final frame from wire-to-wire, never trailing and leading by as many as 11 in a commanding 25-14 set victory, marking the eighth time this season the Wolfpack have limited a team to less than 15 points in a set.

The Wolfpack will hit the road for a two-game road trip next weekend, as NC State will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face Boston College on Nov. 10 and visit Virginia Tech on Nov. 12. The Pack dropped a five-set match to the Eagles on Nov. 3, while NC State swept the Hokies in Reynolds Coliseum on Oct. 15.

Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, with Friday's contest set for a 7 p.m. start and Sunday's matinee scheduled for 12 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va.

Pack volleyball defeats BC 3-1. Eagles won the first set, then the Pack rallied to win the next 3. I think Amanda Rice had 17 kills and Ava Brizzard had 15.

I'm no volleyball expert, but this team needs to work on serving. The amount of service errors seems bad. In this match today, through the first two sets, we have 0 aces and 6 service errors. Meanwhile, VT has 9 aces and only 2 service errors. This disparity in serving is a big factor why VT took the first set. I've noticed a similar pattern in other matches I've watched with an abundance of service errors. And it's not just by Skye Stokes, who's going for aces. I'm talking bad service errors by our players who are not going for aces, but seem to be just trying to get it in play halfway decent, and can't.

That's win number 20 on the season. That loss to BC at home really hurts, but they still have a relatively decent chance to get into the NCAA tournament, and look to be on track to finish 5th in the ACC.

The Wolfpack volleyball team recorded win number 20 on the season after defeating Virginia Tech, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.

The squad's 20 wins are the most in a season since 2017 and the most under head coach Luka Slabe.

The Hokies wasted no time taking a lead over the Wolfpack. Slabe used both his timeouts early in the first set in hopes of helping the Pack regroup. The Wolfpack was unable to slow down the Hokies who recorded five service aces in the opening frame. Virginia Tech took set one 25-16 after a 3-0 scoring run ended the set.

The Pack found momentum after opening the second frame with a 4-1 scoring run. The Hokies tied the set twice early, but another scoring run by the Pack forced Tech to use an early timeout. Tech came out of the timeout taking three straight points to minimize the lead of the Pack to one. Slabe used his first timeout of the set with the Pack leading 11-10. The set continued to be a battle of scoring runs, but the Hokies were unable to top the Pack. On the team's 24th point of the set, junior middle blocker Jada Allen recorded her 300th career block. NC State took the second set 25-22.

Allen recorded the first service ace by the Wolfpack of the afternoon on the team's fifth point of set three. After Tech took its first lead of the set, 11-10, Slabe called timeout to help the Pack regroup. The end of the set was a back and forth battle, but the Pack maintained the lead, coming out on top 25-19.

The Wolfpack continued to maintain momentum and lead in set four. The Hokies made several attempts to stop the Pack, but were unsuccessful. NC State finished the set on top, 25-15.

Ava Brizard led the offensive efforts with 12 kills. Junior opposite Amanda Rice added 11 kills while hitting .429 on the afternoon and added three blocks to her stat line. Sophomore middle blocker Lily Cropped led the blocking efforts with five on the afternoon. Senior libero Skye Stokes recorded 17 digs for the Pack. Allen finished the afternoon with nine kills while hitting .533, in addition to three aces and four blocks.

The Wolfpack return to Reynolds Coliseum on Friday Nov. 17 to host Clemson at 7pm EST and will celebrate the Pack seniors. The match will be streamed on ACCNX.

  • Clemson holds a 24-15 advantage of the Wolfpack in the series, but NC State has won eight of the last 10

The Wolfpack volleyball team advanced to 21-7, 11-6 on the season after defeating Clemson in straight sets Friday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.

The two teams started the match in a back-and-forth battle, but the Wolfpack took a lead that the Tigers were unable to top. Two massive blocks and several scoring runs helped the Pack maintain the lead throughout the opening frame. NC State took the first set 25-20, despite a late rally by the Tigers.

The Pack continued to dominate in the second set, taking a 10-4 lead. After several errors by NC State, Clemson minimized the lead to four, forcing head coach Luka Slabe to call a timeout. The Pack continued to battle and finished the set on top, 25-21.

At the conclusion of the second set, Amanda Rice led the way with eight kills, while Ava Brizard and Martyna Leoniak each tallied seven. The Wolfpack also tallied seven service aces, five in the second set alone.

The third set was no different from the first two, as the Wolfpack continued to dominate. Brizard recorded a solo block to give the Pack its ninth point of the set. Clemson took a timeout as the Pack led 16-9, in hopes to regroup. Leoniak was then called for a net violation, giving Clemson the first point out of the timeout. Clemson found a weak spot in NC State's defense, minimizing the deficit to three. The Wolfpack bounced back and took the set 25-20.

Leoniak and Rice led the team with nine kills each, while Brizard added eight. Fifth year setter Kristen McDaniel led the setters with 16 assists, while Naomi Cabello added 11. Skye Stokes and Leoniak each tallied 17 digs the the Pack. The team finished with 10 service aces on the evening.

The Wolfpack hit the road for the final road match of the 2023 campaign. The Pack will head to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers on Wednesday Nov. 22. First serve is set for 7pm on ACCNX.

The Wolfpack volleyball team swept Virginia (10-17, 3-14) Wednesday evening in the final match of Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The Pack started off shaky as Virginia took a 3-1 lead, but back-to-back blocks by NC State put them ahead. From there NC State maintained the lead and led by at most six points. UVA took its first timeout as the Wolfpack led 20-15, in hopes of regrouping. The Cavaliers managed to minimize the deficit to one, but kills by Amanda Rice and Martyna Leoniak gave the Pack set one, 25-22.

The Cavaliers started the second set with momentum, but the Pack battled back to tie the set 10-all. A kill by Leoniak gave NC State its first lead of the set and the Pack didn't look back. Virginia called timeout trailing by four, but a kill by Madison Williams started a 8-4 run by the Wolfpack. Rice tallied 11 kills on the evening, while Kristen McDaniel recorded 17 assists and Jada Allen had four blocks as the Pack took set two, 25-17.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Down by two, the Wolfpack went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 15-13. The Cavaliers tied the set 17-all, but back-to-back attacking errors put NC State back in front. UVA called a timeout in hopes of slowing down the Wolfpack, but were unsuccessful as NC State ended up taking the set 25-19.

Rice led the way with 16 kills and Leoniak tallied 11. Allen led the way defensively with six blocks, while Cropper and Leoniak each added three. McDaniel led the setters with 27 assists and added two service aces to her stat line.

The Pack finished the regular season 22-7 overall, 12-6 in conference play.

NC State volleyball finished its regular season in Charlottesville, Virginia, sweeping the Cavaliers in three straight sets.

The Wolfpack (22-7, 12-6 ACC) finished the season off strong with 45 kills, six service aces and nine total blocks during the sweep capping off the team's best record since 2017. UVA (10-17, 3-14 ACC) gained momentum throughout the match, but the red-and-white constantly battled back to get the win.

UVA jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead during the first set NC State's single point came from a Cavalier error but the Pack quickly rebounded. Junior opposite hitter Amanda Rice took control of the court and notched a kill and solo block, and junior middle blocker Jada Allen tallied the team's first service ace of the night.

After seizing a 15-10 lead on the first frame, it seemed like the Pack was on the road to an easy set win. UVA would go on a 5-1 scoring run late in the set to push the game closer in the Cavaliers' favor. Rice and junior outside hitter Martyna Leoniak took care of business though, finishing the set 25-22 with a kill each.

Leoniak pushed the Pack forward more within the second set. UVA took another lead, and NC State played catch-up, but Leoniak delivered the kill that gave the red-and-white its first lead of the set. From there, it was all Wolfpack.

Rice tallied a few more kills alongside redshirt sophomore Madison Williams, and junior setter Naomi Cabello gave the Pack another service ace. Finishing the set 25-17, NC State headed into the third set with more swagger and a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Despite having momentum on its side of the net, the Pack struggled to pull ahead in the third set. There were 10 ties and three lead changes within the third frame alone, more than the two previous sets combined. Like the other two sets, UVA jumped out of the gates to grab an early lead, making NC State work twice as hard to make up the points they lost.

Graduate setter Kristen McDaniel playing in her last regular season matchup for NC State scored back-to-back service aces for the Wolfpack, pushing a tie. Allen and Leoniak then took over, elevating the Pack's net presence to help the team stay in the game. Rice and sophomore outside hitter Ava Brizard, along with Williams, kept the team in offensively, helping the team total 15 out of 25 points in kills. A solo block from Allen was the final nail on the coffin for the Cavaliers, sending the Pack to a 25-19 set win and a clean 3-0 sweep.

The Pack relied heavily on mistakes made by UVA. The Cavaliers finished the match with 21 attack errors, two service errors and two block errors accounting for 26 of the 75 points given to NC State. While that is a third of the Wolfpack's points, the visiting red-and-white did play well offensively, hitting .343 as a team by the end of the match. Sophomore middle blocker Lily Cropper hit .750 during the match, followed by Rice with .667 and Williams with .455.

While this was the Pack's last regular season match, the team may have a shot to make the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26 and will be broadcasted on ESPNU.

12-6 conference record is fairly solid, but we did have an easier conference schedule than some of the other teams in the upper half of the league. We only had to play Pitt, Louisville, and Georgia Tech once. But Miami, for instance, had to play Pitt and Georgia Tech twice as well as Louisville once.

I don't know how the selection to the NCAA Tournament works exactly, but I heard the ESPN commentators say that they rely heavily on RPI and head-to-head matchups, as well as "signature" victories. As of the beginning of this week, we were sitting at 42 in the RPI. I don't know if that's good enough to get in the tournament or not. The commentators were saying several weeks ago that they thought that at least 5, but maybe 6 teams from the ACC might get into the tournament. We will finish 5th in the standings in the ACC, but we're helped out by the fact that we had an easier schedule than some other teams.

The top 4 teams in the ACC, which are sure to get in the tournament, are Pitt, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Florida State. It looks like will be competing with Miami and Duke to get into the tournament. Unfortunately, we lost very tough 5 set away matches to both of those teams. Miami was ranked 38 in the RPI at the beginning of this week, but they just lost to Pitt yesterday and have to play Boston College away this weekend. So with that loss (and another potential loss) by Miami, and our victory, maybe we could move ahead of them in the RPI after all regular season matches are complete. Duke is at 45 in the RPI and has an away match at unc this weekend, and hopefully they lose that and drop further.

So perhaps some good news for our NCAA tournament hopes. Duke lost at unc yesterday, and Miami just lost to BC this afternoon and to Pitt on Wednesday. Miami and Duke now both finish 10-8 in ACC play, and more importantly, hopefully, their RPIs fall well below ours with those losses. I would think this gives us the inside track to be that 5th best team selected from the ACC for the tournament. Will be interesting to see the next update to the RPI.
