First of all, for you, you get a chance to look back at this past weekend. What do you feel like were the things that you needed to work on the most?
We were... again, just really inconsistent in some of the detail, I think.
We left some plays on the field, and had opportunities to make some plays; critical plays, and we didn't. Just not consistent. Do I want to throw the ball 48 times against Clemson's pass rush? Not really. I don't know. It felt weird. We were only down a score or two, but it felt different in the game.
But when you looked up, I think in the fourth quarter we were down seven, so we were in the game, we had a good plan, and we just, at times put ourselves, whether it was a penalty or a turnover, we had a couple turnovers around. It's hard to win. You go on the road, and turn the ball over twice and you lose the turnover battle, and it's hard to win those games against two good football teams.
What about Florida State? What sticks out with them?
They're big, fast, physical, very similar to Clemson. They don't do as much defensively, but what they do, they're good at and they know it. In terms of, they don't try to disguise things. They just line up and play, a very talented group.
How big of a game-changer can a guy like Jared Verse be from what you've seen on film of the defensive line?
He's good. They got a really good defensive line. Good DBs. They're a good football team. There's a reason they're four in one right now, and beat some good people. They've done a good job, and it's going to be a great challenge for our guys to bounce back against another good football team.
Coach Doeren mentioned Monday, that the team hasn't been thrown on as many 50-50 balls this year, as in years past. Is that something you think we might be seeing more of here in the future or the rest of the year?
Yeah. It's just, teams are playing us a little bit deeper, right? Three of the first five games you’re getting a lot of two-high deep shell where they're trying to make you throw the ball underneath and run it, is what they're trying to do.
My biggest critique of myself is I got to learn to be patient and just keep taking what they give us instead of... I'm used to throwing the ball down the field. Shot plays and 50-50 balls, and they're not giving us as many. They're really not.
Clemson’s gameplan versus Wake Forest was completely different than what they did against us, completely. They helped their corners, they played two-high shell, they did a lot of things like that to take all that stuff away. We were hoping and trying to gameplan for some of that, and it didn't work. It wasn't the plan.
