“You always [get butterflies before the first game of the season]. You love coaching, and it’s college football, man. It’s back. You certainly get excited about it, and you always have butterflies. It’s part of it.”
“Yeah, I guess. I’m always excited about football, even practice. I love being out there. I love coaching. I love being around our players. I get excited. I love that part of the game.”
“[East Carolina’s defense plays] hard. They play really hard, and they’re fast. They run to the ball well. They do a lot of intricate things. We’re going to have to be patient, see what they’re playing against us, and find ways to attack them.”
“Just consistency. We’ve just got to be consistent. We’ve got to take care of the football. That’s always a big key in any game we play. We’ve got to play hard, and we’ve got to play consistent and just do what we coach them to do and lay it on the line. I like our chances when our guys take care of the football, play hard, and do what we’re coached to do.”
“There’s a brotherhood in [the running back] group. I like what DeMarcus Jones does, and I like Delbert Mimms, too. I think Michael Allen’s a really good young back. That’s a good room to be in, a good room to learn. They all cheer each other on. They all play hard. Each one has some unique things about themselves compared to others, but in the end, I trust them all. Any of them in there, I feel good about.”
“It’s going to be good to get in some type of a routine as an adult and coach, but I know how the players are. We’ve had a lot of practices in the fall, in the spring, and even in bowl season for a game that wasn’t played. Our guys are very hungry.”
“I like Keyon [Lesane]. Keyon had a tremendous fall camp for us. His knowledge of the offense has improved. He understands defensive structures. He’s catching the football and getting open. He’s always been a volatile player with great speed. Now, he’s been able to work on the things that are going to help him potentially be an elite guy for us.”
“We’re very flexible with [receiver positioning]. We have two or three guys that can play in the slot and four or five guys that can play on the perimeter. It’s kind of like the running back room. They all possess certain things better than others, but on the same token, I pretty much trust whoever Coach Joker [Phillips] puts in there. They’ve worked hard, and they’ve earned some opportunities for playing time.”
“I just think [Thayer Thomas] approached every day to get better. There was never a day where Thayer went through the motions. He worked on his blocking, his route running technique, and understanding defenses. Even in that group, he really stood out in terms of how much he worked, and I thought it got better.”
“It’s the same thing [with Devin Carter]: just being consistent. He made some big-time plays for us last season, and he’s done it in camp as well. He’s a physical presence. He’s got good speed. He’s got good ball skills.”
“We’ve worked on those things. Anytime you play an away game, you have crowd noise plugged in. You identify those areas. You work on those areas. I wouldn’t say I’m worried about it."
