How does this experience and familiarity hype this team the way outside words can’t?
It makes it greater, even for day one, compared to last year. We put in a lot of newer things. We didn’t really go with our base plays. We want to branch out of our DNA and our personnel.
For me, I’m really excited. This is my first year playing with the same quarterback. Even throughout high school and college, I’d play with a different quarterback every year, so personally I’m really excited.
How far along were you in the season last year before you were putting in the things you did today?
Right before the [first] game. Last year, we had an all new offense. This is the first year we’ve had a returning offense. This year, we can branch along and keep going because we’ve been working on the base stuff all summer. I know we don’t have to re-learn it.
How much more fun does it make the start of fall camp?
It doesn’t make it any funner or not fun. It’s football. We all love football. I was personally excited, and then I saw the running group was really great, so I was actually very excited.
It’s really football, and you can’t be out here if you don’t love it.
How much excitement is there to move back to a position where you saw a lot at Garner High School?
I’m excited, but I’m more excited to execute my role and do my job. I may be asked to do more things, and I may be asked to do less things, but I can’t really control what I’m asked to do.
I just have to execute every time the ball comes my way, every time a block comes my way, and any time a return comes my way. So really I’m just trying to focus on those things I can do to make the team better.
Is there any kind of adjustment to moving from receiver to running back?
Last year, I used to go to the running back room, but I was based in the receiver room. This year, staying in the running back room with coach [Des] Kitchings going over those things receiver-wise with me, and obviously I do a lot more running back drills and I just spend part-time at receiver routes.
Really, I’m just trying to perfect my craft at both positions.
Do you think the team has depth with you, Reggie Gallaspy, and Dakwa Nichols?
Yes, we have great depth. We even have some people who aren’t here right now because of transfer things.
Erin [Collins] and Nakia [Robinson Jr] are looking really good too, and they’re really coming along. We’re looking great, we’re establishing a culture, and everybody’s buying in. We’re getting the young kids to buy in, and it’s something I haven’t seen in a really long time.
Do you embrace a Swiss army knife role where the team can plug you in anywhere it needs you?
Yes. I’m just trying to do my job. I can’t really control what I’m asked to do, so whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. I grew up a fan here.
I hate losing, so I will do anything I can possibly do to make sure we can win, whether it’s blocking, catching the ball, or anything. I love to do it.
