Apex WR Ashton Locklear Joins Brother At NC State
Family is a common keyword you hear when talking about the culture inside the NC State football program. The Wolfpack built on that theme this week when Apex (NC) Friendship wide receiver Ashton Locklear announced his commitment to the Pack where he’ll join his brother and current Wolfpack offensive assistant, Gavin Locklear.
We first saw Locklear at camp last summer and came away very impressed. He’s a smooth route runner who showed very good hands. He measured in at 6-0, 166 pounds so he’s undersized but as a preferred walk-on he’ll have plenty of time to grow and add speed. Locklear boasted a few smaller school offers prior to picking the Pack. For those unaware, his brother Gavin also came to NC State as a walk-on and worked his way into a scholarship. I think Ashton has the same potential.
Locklear has been around the NC State program for years so making the decision to join the Pack was not difficult.
“I chose State because it felt like God was showing me this was the place I needed to be after my other options didn’t work out and I believe everything happens for a reason.
“State has always felt like home to me- going to the games and watching my brother play really inspired me to play at State one day.”
Speaking of his brother, it’ll be a unique situation as one brother will actually be coaching the other.
“I think playing for my brother will be a great experience and I know he will push me harder than any other coach I’ve had before.”
Locklear had a huge senior season in 2021- totalling 62 catches, for 1,055 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging roughly 105 receiving yards per game.
