Devin Carter: "We Have Chemistry With The Quarterbacks"
NC State brings back a wide receiver room brimming with depth and talent for the 2021 season, and Devin Carter figures to be one of QB Devin Leary’s top targets and a leader in the wideout room.
Carter spoke with the media after practice this week, here’s a full breakdown of everything he had to say:
How much faster have things felt this camp, and how did much working with a quarterback and system you’re familiar with help?
I feel like it’s great. It’s taken off. I knew day one that we were more experienced and faster as a team just by the way we were moving and how our bodies were feeling. I just knew from day one. So it’s been good working with everybody. We have chemistry with the quarterbacks and everything’s been going smooth.
How much does the depth in the receiver room help all of you to have that competition, and how do you feel like you guys compliment each other on the field?
I feel like having that much depth in the receiver room is good. It takes a toll off us and our bodies some days, but it definitely keeps the competition up. We’re day in and day out competing against each other because we can’t sleep. We can’t go to sleep. Somebody else is going to take your spot. I feel like we all complement each other in every aspect of the game, receiver-wise. We’re going to block, we’re going to catch the ball, we’re going to make tough catches. We’re going to do all that stuff.
Now you’re one of the older guys in the receiver room. Has it gone by fast, and who’s someone you’ve taken under your wing?
It’s gone by really fast, I can’t lie to you. I try not to focus on one of the younger guys. I try to focus on all of the younger guys. That’s another thing about our receiver room. With the depth we’ve got, you’re bound to miss one little detail here and there. So somebody’s going to keep you accountable and hold you accountable. But for the younger guys, I just tell them to try to be like me when I was younger. I wasn’t really ready physically yet, but I was a sponge. I took in everything up here. So now I’ve got that and I can provide it to them. So I try and tell them to just be a sponge and take in everything.
What did you learn from guys like Kelvin Harmon and Steph Louis that you’re trying to pass on to the younger guys?
Work and consistency. Those two things will get you far. If you’re the same person every day, but you’ve got to be your best every day. You can’t just be plain old DC. You’ve got to be your best every day. If you’re working, and you’re consistent every day, there’s not much that you’re going to miss.
What has the relationship with Joker Phillips been like, and what has he brought to that room?
It’s been great with Joker. He’s a great coach. He’s very hands on and he’s very personable. He wants to know everybody’s name. Not just in the receiver room. He wants to know everybody’s name. He’s a really good person; I love him.
