JC Catcher Tucker Mitchell Will Not Enroll At NC State

NC State junior college commitment Tucker Mitchell agreed to terms with the Texas Rangers and will not enroll in fall classes.

Mitchell was drafted in the 14th round by the Rangers after a standout season at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.

He played in 52 games and posted a .382 batting average with nine home runs, 20 doubles, and a .657 slugging percentage. He followed that up by dominating the MLB Draft League for the West Virginia Black Bears.

NC State has added JC catcher Jacob Godman and prep standout Jacob Cozart.

Godman and Cozart is a fine tandem. If Mitchell/Tresh had arrived, I think State would've had too many mouths to feed

We have 3 dudes for the position in Godman, Cozart and Matt Oldham. If it were just Godman and Cozart, we'd be good to go.

Hopefully one of Godman/Cozart establishes himself as an ACC-caliber catcher (both offensively and defensively) in a hurry.

Oldham is strictly an emergency/defensive piece at this point. His offense didn't cut it at Elon; it certainly won't suffice in the ACC.

(and I'm not trying to be doom-and-gloom; honest)

I'm sure Avent foresaw the potential that all of this could happen, so I'm confident we'll be ready to roll by the Spring.

We didn't have an established ACC caliber C coming into this season either. Luca had shown he could hit but hadn't played much behind the plate at all. It showed throughout the season, too.

Godman and Cozart is all you need. Matt can obviously play in a pinch as the 2nd or 3rd C on the team.

Point is, unlike this season, we'll have 2-3 kids that can play, if needed.

Some crappy luck to lose a few of these guys. We will be fine, EA and staff have done a great job of bringing in offensive pieces. I'm most interested to see if Villaman takes over a roll like Justice last season or if they try and move him to a starter. Like where we are starting, coach em up

He was a starter last year. I'd expect them to do the same and if he doesn't handle a weekend role well then he can move to the pen like Evan. Definitely want him stretched out so he's used to going more than an inning or two (again, like Evan).
