MCLAMB: Someone Needs To Speak Up

June 26, 2021
33,215

Let me be clear. At this point, I do not know all the facts about the astounding spiral that NC State took over the course of the last two days. Having already secured its greatest finish ever, the baseball program seemed genuinely poised to compete for and potentially win a national championship.

NC State now heads home. The calendar has not yet reached July, but the joys and excitement from Ruston, Louisiana, and Fayetteville, Arkansas feel like years ago. It is a vague memory now.

Vanderbilt gets to rebound from a loss just a few days earlier to line up its pitching staff in the College World Series Final, something that seldom happens to a team that is defeated early in the CWS, but it could very well not be the Commodores' fault.

Maybe Vanderbilt cannot be blamed. NC State, which had 13 players who were suitable to play on Friday but then was relegated to a forfeiture of their place in Omaha less than 11 hours after they actually did suit up and play, may deserve some or all of the blame.

I do not know. You do not know. We do not know.

NC State was allowed to play Friday. NC State was disqualified Saturday. The disqualification occurred at around two in the morning. The news dump of all news dumps.

No one has answers. That would take dialog. We are not getting that.

Would NC State have been disqualified if they had won the game Friday? The Wolfpack actually had a legitimate chance to beat Vanderbilt and will rightly lament the runners left on base and the unearned runs allowed in a two-run loss. NCSU could have pulled it out. If they did, what happens then?

No one has said. They probably will not say. Hypotheticals are seldom addressed.

Since the pandemic started, the law degrees on social media have given way to medical degrees. Everyone's an expert.

I am not an expert. I have a political science degree with a journalism minor. I am working on a master’s in journalism. My education was not geared toward anything medical. I'm not too fond of science class. That is the way I like it. When it comes to the medical, vaccinations included, I defer to folks who are well-versed in the field and not no-names with Twitter handles.

What I do know now is that NC State did not properly do whatever it is that suffices with the NCAA.

The NCAA, which has been getting shellacked in court quite a bit recently, can roll on whims with the best of them. Is that happening now? No one has answers, but being allowed to play and then sent home in a span of less than half of a day does not exactly swim in a sea of consistency.

The “#Pack13” will probably live in immortality now. NC State fans will make sure they are not forgotten.

NC State's sports teams often take the Shakespearean route, so we will get a healthy dose of hearing about how NCSU is “jinxed,” which is ridiculous. The Wolfpack was either screwed over or shot itself in the foot, but it will all be hearsay, conjecture, and conspiracies until people with real answers step up.

Just give us the truth.

Someone is going to have to speak about this. College sports are subsidized partly by ticket purchases and donations. NC State knows this well, as the drumbeats for a new baseball stadium have been louder and more frequent in recent weeks. So why would folks donate to someone who does not give them the common courtesy of an explanation?

Fans want titles. Teams sent home don't win titles.

Remarkably, no one at the NCAA or NC State has even bothered to try to control the narrative at this point. There are already wild rumors on the internet, but the real information will trickle out eventually. It is coming. I may find out. Another journalist may find it. Sometime soon, it will all get out.

Someone will eventually have to accept responsibility. However, that does not mean they have to be blamed too. This is a world full of imperfection, especially if it relates to folks in their late teens or early 20s. Accountability demands respect.

This is bigger than Wolfpack Nation. The NCAA calls it the college version of a “World Series,” so there is a minimum of a whole country that wants to know what really happened.

Now give us the answers.

I hope Boo, Avent and local media are asking the questions. I would rather have the final accurate news even if it's unfavorable to State, then have questions and resentment towards someone who doesn't deserve it.

Just got done sending an email to Boo before logging on to IPS and reading this. I encourage others to do the same and put some pressure on him to step up and do the right thing for our student athletes and university. It's his job to fight for us. Those who support this university with their hard earned dollars deserve to have answers. I'm so mad I can't see straight.

Woodson too. As well as the ACC. They all should be up in arms about this. The silence from everyone involved is deafening. Even the players. Obviously they've been told to not say a word. If I'm a senior on this time I'm raising absolute hell.

Boo? Boo? Are you out there? Speak up if you are. Deb Yow would've chewed up every corrupt NCAA ass by now. NC State players and fans deserve better than we are getting. The AD needs to step up and aggressively lead or go find a realtor.

Don't hold your breath waiting on the ACC to step up and support the Pack. I can hear Swofford laughing all the way up here in WNC.

My email to Boo:

Hi Boo,

I want to start this off by commending you for a job well done so far as AD for our beloved Wolfpack athletics programs. It appears to me that things continue to move in the right direction for the vast majority of programs. This is a trend that Dr. Yow established and you are admirably building upon. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence. It makes us proud to pull for our alma mater.

That said, would you please explain to me what just happened in the last 24 hours to our baseball program? We had the hottest team in the country, poised to potentially bring a rare national championship back to Raleigh. It would have been the first natty in the "Big Four" (FB, men's basketball, women's basketball, and baseball) that we have achieved in 38 years. 38 years.

In your response, I particularly would like an answer to the following question: were the members of this baseball team and staff vaccinated? Because rumor has it that they were not, or at least the players that were held out were not. If this is the case, it is a case of gross irresponsibility. I understand that these are young men, barely men, they are not fully mature human beings, and they will make mistakes and foolhardy decisions as they learn how to become adults, which is part of the purpose of college and college athletics. But this is precisely why they needed guidance and leadership from their coaches, staff, counselors, and frankly, yourself.

Their really is no excuse at this point in time for someone to avoid getting fully inoculated against the virus that nearly destroyed our economy, caused 600,000 US deaths (almost as many as the 1918 Flu pandemic, the worst in US history, which killed 675,000, in case you weren't aware of the very comparable numbers), and has required countless teams in every sort imaginable, both pro and college, to suspend activities for the safety of players, coaches, staff, family, fans, etc. I know nobody can, nor should, be forced into getting a vaccination. But why in God's name would you, coach Avent, his staff, counselors, and every fully matured adult around these kids not strongly and consistently encourage them to get vaccinated? You all knew about the NCAA protocols. You all knew what could happen to any team at any time. You all knew what was at stake here for these young men. Please explain what happened. I will anxiously await your response. Thank you.

First two paragraphs were good then you ventured off to where the media will want you to go. Mine will look more like this:

"If the rules are in place for a reason then why is Vanderbilt not in Covid protocol as well? How are they allowed to play after coming in contact with our players yesterday? They also need to be eliminated from the CWS in following the guidelines exhibited by the NCAA. If they are allowed to play another game then the University should immediately file an injunction to stop the game until a ruling can be handed down by the NC court system. Is there a plan in place for this? Is the ACC ready to get behind us in this fight? If not, then why? Is the University going to just accept this ruling? If there is not some type of action taken to protest this I will need to take that into consideration when I am asked to support the athletic department in the future "

Can someone please post the email address for Corrigan and Woodson? I think I will send that.

Why does everyone seem to forget the science?! Baseball is a sport played outdoors with social distancing designed into the game. Very minimal risk of transmission. But absolutely has the risk of heart inflammation with the two most commonly used vaccines in pfizer and moderna. Anyone that believes it's rare hasn't been paying attention. My children, if they were of age, would not be vaccinated if I had my way. It's gross incompetence by the NCAA to do this. As another poster just posted, why aren't the rules being applied across the board? Remove Vandy too.

If the team was not encouraged or even required (without a legitimate underlying condition) to get vaccinated by the medical staff and athletic department, knowing the potential ramifications after witnessing what happened to other teams including our basketball and football teams ,then that's on NC State. That said, the timing by the NCAA and the common knowledge that the organization is incompetent and full of buffoons , warrants a full investigation into that decision.

The team was in the middle of their season when the vaccine became available for their demographic, why anyone wouldn't think of the logical fact that players would be worried about potential side effects and potentially missing games (in season) is beyond me. I'm sure that the same would be true for almost every other single team that was trying to make the tournament as well.

I'm more interested in why a player was dismissed from the team.

Does anyone know when the team will be back in Raleigh. I think we should welcome them home to Raleigh with a big welcome. Either at the airport or at the Doak. I drove from Hickory last night to Raleigh to watch the game at one of the bars near the campus. Now I'm so heartbroken. I feel like a nice welcome home to the Pack9 would be nice. Anyone know if anything like this may be planned?

There is no real excuse for the players to not be vaccinated. With that being said however the real crime here is the NCAA making a decision and releasing it at 2:00;AM in the morning. That is criminal.

I just watched a short story on E-60 about this US Rower named Susan Francia, of the twice championship gold medal US team (2 Olympics/more than 2 golds). Actually the story was about her mom, Dr. Kati (Katalin) Kariko who has been working with MRNA for 40 years; she started at home in Hungary. If you have ESPN+, you can watch the full 20+ minutes.

The doc and her husband were leaving Hungary 30+ years ago and they could only take $50 with them. They sewed their life savings of $1200 in their oldest daughter's teddy bear and escaped with it to PA. 40 years of work on her MRNA discovery became the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine with 95% effectiveness. Her daughter (the rower champ) says that 95% is an unheard of number for vaccines.

Proud to say that I've have 2 of them!

Clearly, you have all the answers, so I'll ask...

It's being reported that two unvaccinated players tested positive and that four vaccinated players tested positive.

Please explain how the vaccine made the difference here.

Thanks!

I'll try to make this make sense as to why our players SHOULD NOT be vaccinated which i'm sure will be argued. But here's my thoughts:

More than 318 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through June 21, 2021. During this time, VAERS received 5,479 reports of death (0.0017%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Also the FDA just added a warning label to the vaccine about pericarditis risks, especially to young adolescent males. As of June 21, 2021, VAERS has received 616 reports of myocarditis or pericarditis among people ages 30 and younger who received COVID-19 vaccine (unsure of how many of those there were)

As of June 9th, there have been 2637 deaths in people under the age of 30. There have been 33.6 million cases of covid. So from my math is there's a total of 600,000 deaths roughly. Those less than 30 compromise approx 0.4% of the deaths in the US and chances of being less than 30, positive for covid and passing away are 0.0007%.

I believe the chances of dying from the vaccine are actually higher than the chances aged less than 30 to die from the disease. Argue if you want but that's all data from the CDC. Keep in mind as well, the FDA pulled Johnson and Johnson's vaccine after 36 confirmed cases out of 12 million doses of their vaccine to "make sure it was safe." But with 616 cases of myocarditis, they place a warning on a bottle that the patient will never see??

And just for the record, I got the vaccine. However, seeing this data I'd never recommend someone under the age of 30 get it unless the numbers change.

Immunity from prior infection, health limitations making them unable to be vaccinated, and religious reasons are three "real excuses" for not being vaccinated. We do not know if any of these actually applied to the players. We do know the start of State's season was delayed due to an outbreak of Covid on the team. So, it is a reasonable assumption that some of the unvaccinated players may have had immunity from prior infection.

1. Avent has let the team, fans, staff down. His PC after the game was a joke. He should be explaining, bi&*hung, calling for heads, outing the Vandy coach, etc. Same for Boo...grow a pair fellows. You should still be doing interviews and PC's. You should have DEMANDED all of Vandy be tested. Ya'll have been near each other recently and it takes a while to test positive and can for weeks.
2. Vaccinated or not - personal choice. Time to stop all the testing. Too much BS with this Covid information. Time to carry on. Variants have been out since day 1 in the US. The Navy does not require you to be vaccinated (neither does any branch of service). Personal decision.
3. Avent should be lawyer up and be creating havoc. So should Boo. All NC State fans should be at the game today chanting NC State the whole game. We should make this such a spectacle that our ball case is dropped.

I personally know members of the T&F team who accepted the Pfizer vaccine that was made available to all student athletes earlier this spring. They were also in season.

If every player and coach on all teams in CWS was not tested, we should file a lawsuit.

Further, we should band together and build the # 1 ball park and facilities in NCAA.

I am on fixed income and would contribute strongly to provide what is needed.

Vaccine or no vaccine, if the kids were a health risk to whomever Saturday at 2 am, then they were at 3pm at Friday. So, either the NCAA needs to defend why they allowed a team deemed a health risk play less than 8 hours earlier or defend what changed in those 8 hours. Either way, if I'm state I'm lawyering up.

First,
The virus didn't cause 600K deaths in this country. The real numbers directly caused by covid-19 are around 1200 according to the CDC. Also, these vaccines have shown to have terrible effects, including enlargement of the heart in young men. Do your research as opposed to listening to the talking heads on TV. Lastly, getting vaxed is a personal choice and young men who have a 99.999999999% chance to live if they get this virus shouldn't be penalized. In fact, I don't think you can call this a pandemic when 99% of those who get the thing live. You mentioned the 1918 flu, and you skew your numbers. Yes, 675K plus people died from that flu, but the population was a fraction of what it is today and that flu killed young people. This one mainly takes old people, avg age of death for covid is 78 years of age, CDC. The numbers are not comparable at all. The 1918 flu killed almost 20% of the population compared to less than 1/10th of 1% with this flu.

This is a gross miscalculation by the NCAA and their corruption needs to be pointed out as loudly and publicly as possible. You should strongly consider recalling your email filled with misinformation.

You are correct that the military is currently allowing the members to choose, why I can't understand, you're in the military you do what you're told, end of discussion. However, I have been told that once the vaccines get full FDA approval it will no longer be optional for military members.

Give me a break. The odds of developing heart inflammation from the vaccine is about the same as getting hit by a meteor. The odds of developing heart inflammation and actual permanent heart damage are WAAAY higher from COVID itself, even after asymptomatic infections... along with many other possibly long-term problems that your kids don't want (shortness of breath, brain fog, constant fevers, hair loss, etc). The rest of your napkin math is highly suspect, and this crusade to push people away from protecting themselves from a pandemic (first no masks, now no vaccines) is honestly pretty evil. Anyhoo.

People can nash their teeth at the NCAA all they want, but this was entirely avoidable. Fielding a team in the f'ing WORLD SERIES that wasn't fully vaccinated was idiotic, knowing full well the protocols and how the NCAA can be, and someone on our staff should be fired over it.

As bad of a hose job as this was, hate were never going to get to see most of these guys play in a NC State jersey again.

So many armchair epidemiologists out today. It's so sad that vaccination has become politicized.

It's unlikely there will be any information from State or the NCAA officials. Student and health information is protected under privacy laws. At best, there will be second and third hand statements that will be parsed. misquoted, and "interpreted".

Clearly, you have all the answers, so I'll ask...

It's being reported that two unvaccinated players tested positive and that four vaccinated players tested positive.

Please explain how the vaccine made the difference here.

Thanks!

The vaccine was never advertised to be 100%, especially with the new Delta variant sweeping through.

What the vaccine does is make it more likely a breakthrough infection will be asymptomatic, and as importantly, makes it far less likely that you can spread the virus you have to someone else.

Back to topic: why are Boo and Avent not clarifying things.

You are correct that the military is currently allowing the members to choose, why I can't understand, you're in the military you do what you're told, end of discussion. However, I have been told that once the vaccines get full FDA approval it will no longer be optional for military members.

As a military member, let me enlighten you.

There's a DOD regulation that states that a drug/vaccine must be put through a two year study before it can be administered to the military. All of these vaccines received a waiver for emergency FDA approval. That does not meet military requirements.

Secondly, the military mandated a series of anthrax vaccinations following 9/11. That shortsighted decision caused countless physical side effects that the VA is now paying veterans for.

Those are two literal reasons why the vaccines are optional for military members.

Aside form that, this virus poses almost 0 threat to the military demographic. The last statistic I saw, there had been less than 30 deaths in the 2.2M member US military, and the overwhelming majority of those were reserve/guard forces (generally older and not typically in as good physical condition). That's a death rate of 0.000013636363636...Isn't that an interesting control group (e.g. under 50, exercise regular, standard medical care) that the media has never written a story on. I guess it's not politically expedient?

I'd assume that young division one athletes are at less risk than the the aforementioned military members.

I'm sorry that the DOD policy doesn't align with your personal opinions.
