Meyers Has A Sense of Urgency

According to Jakobi Meyers there is a sense of urgency within the NC State football program.

However, it has existed since the before the season began.

The Wolfpack are coming off two tough losses that has forced the team to readjust its goals for the remainder of the campaign.

There is plenty to play for. NC State aspires to finish with seven conference wins and become just the second team in school history to reach double-figures in victories in a season.

Despite ceding control of the Atlantic Division to Clemson on Saturday, Meyers has no problem summoning the motivation to go forward.

“We have just got to do what we have got to do,” Meyers said. “At this point, it is in somebody else’s hands. We understand that, so what we can control we are going to take control of. We are going to handle our business and work hard everyday.

“I think every week there is a sense of urgency to be able to win. Everyone doesn’t go out here to practice to lose so we are just going to keep fighting, keep our head down and go to work.”

While the game with Clemson will almost certainly have the most luster, there are no respites within the Atlantic Division. It has reached a point where every time two teams battle anything is possible.

NC State lost to Boston College at home last season in what seemed to be an upset but the Eagles emerged and were awarded a bowl berth.

For Meyers, taking on strong competition is not a something to shy away from. In fact, it is a compelling reason to be at NC State.

“I love it,” Meyers said. “You can see where you are really at and where you really stand. You get real competition so every day, every game, you can get better. You get to see or learn something new about yourself, see what you can do and what you can do.”

While the competition remains tough, the atmosphere at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts will be decidedly different than what the Wolfpack is accustomed to.

"We understand the situation we are going in to," Meyers said of the small crowd expected for Saturday’s game. "We have just got to bring our own energy. The setting already is not for us, it will be cold up there and it is not our hometown, but we are going to bring our energy in and not let anything hold us back because we have still got something to play for."

The preparation began in earnest prior to the season opener. The game against Boston College will rely heavily on basic fundamentals.

This is what NC State has been training for. The Wolfpack cannot cower in the face of adversity if it hopes to attain its reachable goals.

“I think it really all started in the summer,” Meyers said. ‘All of the receivers we were all coming out here and putting in work every day so I think we have a good thing going with each other from the summertime and it is just progressing everyday,”

“I think [the Boston College defense is] aggressive and in your face so you have got to take shots to beat them. They have got a lot of strength on that D-Line so I think it will be a good challenge. They like to get their hands on receivers so we have got to be able to trust our training to get those hands down and run our routes to create separation.”
