MLB DRAFT: Swiney Joins Bailey In San Francisco
NC State left-handed pitcher Nick Swiney has been selected in the compensatory round by the San Francisco Giants at No. 67 overall. He will join catcher Patrick Bailey who was drafted in the first round at No. 13.
After leading the Wolfpack in strikeouts in 2019 with 95, the Collegiate Baseball Second-Team All-American dominated on the mound in the shortened 2020 season, finishing with an unblemished 4-0 record and a miniscule 1.29 earned run average. Swiney recorded 42 strikeouts, 10th in the NCAA, while only walking six batters in his 28 innings on the mound.
In the Wolfpack’s 6-0 win over Purdue on Feb. 29 in Minneapolis, Minn., Swiney pitched arguably his best game in his collegiate career. After allowing a single and a hit batsman in the first inning, the Pack’s premier southpaw retired 22 batters in a row, earning the win with 15 strikeouts in eight innings of work. HIs performance in the Gopher State earned him ACC Pitcher of the Week and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week honors.
