WATCH: NC State's Dave Doeren Says Pack Focused On Pitt
NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media following Thursday's practice.
At Wisconsin, Chris Borland kicked for us. In the Hawaii game, he made five extra points.
At Northern we had a three-technique, Ken Bishop, who played for the Cowboys, he played fullback on the goalline.
If it's one or two runs, where he's running inside or outside zone, or a reverse, it's not very hard.
Obviously, Alston has been on the offensive side so you could do something with him if you wanted to.
He'd have been really good. His vision is incredible so I think he'd have been tremendous there.
He has the ability to make things happen with his feet. He does a good job on third down of escaping and sometimes running or throw it down the field.
We have to be aware of what he's doing with his feet because he can run better than the last guy did.
Everything has been about winning at Pitt, playing well when you get there, being focused, and doing the things we need to do to get better.
Have you had any players play both ways for you previously?
Yes, Aquib Talib played both ways at Kansas. John Randle was a running back and a corner, he played both ways. Charles Gordon was a receiver and corner who played both ways. At Kansas we had to.At Wisconsin, Chris Borland kicked for us. In the Hawaii game, he made five extra points.
At Northern we had a three-technique, Ken Bishop, who played for the Cowboys, he played fullback on the goalline.
How hard is doing what Jordan Whitehead has been doing?
It just depends on how much they give him. Last week he had one play and they ran it a bunch. He got the ball and did a great job for them. It just depends on how much they expand the package. If it's one or two runs, where he's running inside or outside zone, or a reverse, it's not very hard.
Take out Johnathan Alston, which player would you be curious to see play both ways?
There's a lot of guys... a lot of d-linemen we could use in tight end positions or fullback positions. You look at Roseboro, Eurndraus Bryant, B.J. Hill... they were all guys who were high school running backs. If we ever had to do something, they'd be guys you could do that with.Obviously, Alston has been on the offensive side so you could do something with him if you wanted to.
How good of a linebacker could Jay Sam have been?
Do you notice with the backup quarterback he rolls out more, does more with his feet than Max Browne?
He's a better athlete, you can see that. They do a lot out of the pocket with their shovel game. Whether it's an option shovel, jet shovel, or sprint-out with a shovel. He has the ability to make things happen with his feet. He does a good job on third down of escaping and sometimes running or throw it down the field.
We have to be aware of what he's doing with his feet because he can run better than the last guy did.
Did you have to address the team at all about this Road Warrior mentality?
No, we haven't talked about it. We're focused on this game. After this game we get a break so it's not like it's consecutive. There's a break in the action and we'll be home for an extended period of time and then we'll go again.Everything has been about winning at Pitt, playing well when you get there, being focused, and doing the things we need to do to get better.
