What does it mean to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame?
What does it mean to me to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame? A lot.
This is a very humbling accomplishment. It’s also an example of the hard work I put in, my teammates, my coaches for believing in me.
North Carolina State University for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to pursue my dreams as a college athlete and a student.
To be able to do that and years later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame with the likes of Darren McFadden, Terrell Buckley, and London Fletcher, who was a teammate of mine. We won a Super Bowl together in St. Louis.
It’s a tremendous feeling. I’m very honored, and I’m also happy that my Pops is still alive and he was able to take this in... my kids, my wife. It’s a tremendous accomplishment.
I’m just a representation of all the great wide receivers who came from North Carolina State University, like Mike Quick, Haywood Jeffires, Eddie Goines, Jerricho Cotchery, Koren Robinson, and the list goes on and on. I’m an example of that.
I’m going into the College Football Hall of Fame, but all of those guys are going in with me because they showed me how to do it the right way.
Why did you choose the Wolfpack?
Well, when I was coming out of high school I didn’t qualify academically so I had to go to Hargrave Military Academy.
NC State said, “Look, you have to go to the military academy, but we’ll sign you to a letter of intent. Go there, get your grades, and there is a scholarship here waiting for you once you take care of your business.”
I went to Hargrave Military Academy, got my grades up, got my SAT scores, and I wanted to show that same amount of loyalty they showed to me. I signed the dotted line, went on to NC State, had an opportunity to compete and play, and the rest is history.
Just the belief that NC State showed in me, I wanted to make sure that I made them right.
What was your favorite game or favorite play that you made at NC State?
My favorite game at NC State was 1998, FSU, the No. 2 or No. 3 team overall in the country, came into the Carter, sea of Red. It was unbelievable. We ended up winning that game.
My favorite play was in the same game. I caught a deep post. Jamie Barnette dropped back, hit me, that catch, that touchdown, kind of put the game away for us.
Those are the two favorite moments I had at NC State.
What’s next for you?
Raising my kids. I have two girls, and my son is in college at NC State University studying Engineering.
I have two girls, a junior in high school and a sophomore in high school. I want to get them through high school and off to college. They both want to play soccer collegiately, and I’m hoping they stay in the ACC, but if they get a scholarship I’m fine with that.
Then I want to continue pursuing, my brother and I are business partners, I want to continue pursuing my business, but ultimately I want to stay around sports radio or TV, as well... hopefully have a career in that the next 10 or 15 years, as well.
