Very disappointed with pretty much everything in today's game. Not that we lost on the road, but we were not prepared and did not handle the adjustments well. We went away from the things that were working like the run game and then tried to turn ourselves into a passing team in the second half without giving the run a chance. Make them stop what you had been doing well and we did not do that early in the second half.

Quarterbacks always get too much blame with a loss and too much credit for a win. As Coach mentioned in the press conference there were dropped balls, wrong routes, missed blocks, and lots of other mistakes. Happens in every game, but the QB play was not good and the play calling was even worse. I know it's only one game, but I feared that when Matt McKay was named the starter and by what Coach Doeren said when it was announced, it was my opinion we were getting a "game manager" instead of a quarterback. Matt has done a great job of not turning the ball over, but today we needed a dynamic quarterback who can take over the game throwing. When the defense knows you are not going to throw deep then they can key on the short routes and WVU did just that. There was never any fear on their part of us going deep and we have not been good on getting the ball down field and completing the passes. He was also staring down his receivers and really hanging those guys out to dry because the defense knew where the ball was going.

The QB competition should still be ongoing. Hockman or Leary both need a chance to see if they can give us what we need at the position. One of them should have been put in today and both should have gotten more time the first two games. I understand with a very young offense you want to be smart and take what the defense gives you, but if you want to beat good teams, you have to take what you want and make the defense pay for not having any respect for your downfield passing game. A "game manager" and some suspect play selection is not going to get us to the next level. A whole lot of blame to go around on both sides of the ball, but the offensive side was pretty much putrid in the second half.
Being an N. C. State fan builds great character!
