TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA -- NC State went to Tallahassee looking to atone for a pair of brutal losses and to make a splash in the rugged Atlantic Division of the ACC.
The Wolfpack did just that.
NC State stunned No. 12 Florida State 27-21 in Tallahassee to open ACC play with a huge road victory against the preseason favorite for the conference title.
The Pack improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while the Seminoles drop to 0-2 and 0-1 in league play.
Despite coming in as a heavy underdog, NC State led for the final 53:09 of the contest and never trailed.
It did get nervy at times for the Wolfpack.
After opening up a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, the Wolfpack saw its advantage cut to three when James Blackman, starting for the first time in his college career, found Auden Tate for a 4-yard touchdown with over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Ryan Finley found Jakobi Meyers for a 71-yard touchdown with 1:24 left in the second quarter to extend NC State’s lead back to 10. Meyers did a flip as he crossed the goal line and the penalty gave Florida State a short field.
The Seminoles could not use it to its advantage however.
While NC State’s defense would bend it never did break. FSU attempted five field goals in the game, making four, but only scored one touchdown on the afternoon.
Jaylen Samuels scored from 14 yards out on a shovel pass from Finley to give the Wolfpack a 27-16 lead with 9:16 remaining.
Finley finished 22-for-32 for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Meyers had five catches for 112 yards and a score.
Bradley Chubb (two), B.J. Hill and Justin Jones each recorded a sack.
The biggest stat of the game for NC State may be rushing. Maligned early, the ground attack was huge for the Wolfpack after intermission. Nyheim Hines finished with 94 yards on 24 carries, including a critical run late that sealed the win for State.
NC State has defeated Florida State three times on the road. It is the Pack’s first win in Tallahassee since 2005.
