Doeren Still Has Faith In Carson Wise
Carson Wise arrived in Raleigh looking to solidify the kicking position at NC State.
A two-year starter at Carson-Newman, Wise connected on 21-31 field goals during his time in the program while hitting 97-101 on extra points. He tied a school record for points in a game by a kicker with 17, and has a career-long kick of 49 yards.
The two-team second-team All-SAC selection earned his degree from the school in social entrepreneurship, enabling him to transfer to the school of his choice.
He picked NC State likely with the understanding that if he took care of business in fall camp he would be the starter at the beginning of the season.
Wise won the job but has struggled.
He missed his lone attempt in the opener against South Carolina, and although he made his first field goal try in the home opener, he missed an extra point.
In the fourth quarter against Furman he received another opportunity, but missed the 38-yard attempt.
Just 1-of-3 this season, fans are obviously concerned that the kicking situation will be shaky again after costing the Wolfpack games in 2016.
Dave Doeren indicated today in his weekly press conference that he maintains faith in Wise and isn't looking to open back up the competition.
"I'm disappointed he missed that kick obviously," said Doeren. "But, I have faith in him. I think you stay the course right now, and he's done a good job from 45 and in practice. He's been very consistent.
"He missed the kick. At that point, I don't know if he didn't think we'd kick that late in the game or not. I thought it was a good opportunity to run him out there, and he missed.
"So, stay the course right now. I'm not going to panic."
Wise will get another opportunity this weekend in the Wolfpack's first road game of the season, a noon tilt at Florida State.
