MLB DRAFT: Wolfpack Prospect Drafted By Arizona

New Hanover HS left-handed pitcher and NC State commit Blake Walston has been drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks at No. 26 overall in the 2019 MLB Draft.

According to MaxPreps, Walston recorded an unblemished 12-0 record and a miniscule 0.20 earned run average this season. He also recorded a .405 batting average with 18 runs batted in and 25 runs scored in his senior season for the Wildcats.

Walston’s proficiency on the mound aided in New Hanover’s 3A State Championship run that culminated at Five County Stadium in Zebulon as the Wildcats downed Marvin Ridge in two straight games to win the title.

The Wolfpack touts Walston highly as one of its better incoming freshmen. However, MLB.com has Walston’s position in the draft valued at $2.65 million, giving the southpaw a difficult decision about his future moving forward.

Saw on twitter that if he goes to State and does well, he'll likely be drafted first overall when eligible. Tough decision to turn down millions of dollars to chase more money but having been through the process before with his brother, I'm sure they'll lean on their advisers and he'll do what he feels is best for his career.

Selfishly, I hope he turns down the money and suits up for the Pack. It's players (pitchers) like Walston that render many of EA's blunders irrelevant.

first pick is slotted at over 8 mil. Walston at 26 is looking at around 2.3 mil. He could go to school and get inside the top 20 and get over 3 mil but is the risk really worth it? Crazier things have happened but I wouldn't bank on it.

Since there could be some benefit by staying and improving draft position, is this a situation where insurance for the player is the best way to go? I mean it is real money to go from 2.6 million to 8 million but you have to cover at least some of the 2.6 if you were to have a career ending injury.
